Alex Garland on Civil War | BFI IMAX Q&A

Фильм және анимация

Writer-director Alex Garland visits BFI IMAX to talk about his explosive blockbuster, which explores social breakdown and internecine strife across the US.
As we reach a critical point in US - and by extension, global - politics, Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation) envisions a country torn apart by divisions.
Kirsten Dunst plays a journalist covering uprisings across various states, as a concerted effort to wage a military campaign against the government edges towards Washington D.C. But is everything what it seems? Who is really upholding the rights of the people enshrined in the U.S. Constitution? This is up-to-the-minute, high-octane and intelligent action cinema.

Astonishing and overdue, someone addresses the so called beauty surgery reality which is a pandemic. It's practically impossible to match old photos with current looks in not so few cases.

This film is the about the politics of "centrist vs extremist...and if you don't think that counts as politics, your definition is too narrow." Perfect summary. I've seen a few reviews which have criticised the lack of specificity of the 'politics' of this film (by which they probably mean 'party politics'). His definition has confirmed what I had suspected that rather than this being a loose, or lazy, or untidy piece of work, it was making a more general larger point. This will possibly give it some longevity, rather than needing to be interpreted by viewers in the future. Also - great interviewer, I really love and appreciate these BFI pieces.

That comment about plastic surgery is incredible. That takes guts to just say that out loud as a director who works with actors on a regular basis.

Really enjoyed the film but easy for people like alex in their ivory towers to criticise behaviours which are aimed at protecting one group against another. It's more nuanced and deserves more analysis
