ALEKS: Drawing the MO energy diagram for a Period 2 homodiatom

    How do I drag to orbital boxes into the field to answer the question? I click the box and click the field to no avail. Nothing happens. The box doesn't get placed down. idk what to do. I guess I will die

    I hope that you are still alive :) It sounds like you're doing it correctly - click on the box in the "tools" and then move your cursor into the answer area. It should then start to "highlight" spots where a box can be placed. ALEKS is really bossy about where it wants the boxes to go. The first box will be placed in the lower left corner of the answer area. Maybe your cursor wasn't close enough to that spot for it to be happy?

    Wait I'm a little confused. Why does fluorine have 9 valence electrons? Is it not 7?

    You are correct, I said 9 “valence” once, incorrectly. I drew and referred to the total number of electrons in the F atom, which is 9.

    I don't understand why the top antibonding sigma didn't get any arrows?

    Because there weren't enough electrons to fill that orbital. The MO orbitals can only contain the total number of electrons from the individual atoms.

    @@Mari-oy2em Very good question. Orbitals that are equal in energy will be completely filled up with electrons before any electrons are placed into higher orbitals. In the MO diagram, orbitals that are drawn side by side are equal in energy. So, the pi 2p bonding orbitals get completely filled up before moving on up to the pi 2p anti-bonding orbitals. And the pi 2p anti-bonding orbitals must be filled before anything goes into the top sigma anti-bonding orbital.
