I am nearly certain that Alec didn't realize you aren't supposed to hold the trigger down while your pulling back the hammer. The type of revolver he was using would not have allowed the hammer to strike the primer without the trigger being held down. It is simply not how the gun is designed. If you aren't pulling the trigger the weapon will have 4 click stops that function as a safety measure to prevent accidental discharge. Beyond that I'm fairly certain that all movie prop guns of that type are modified with an additional safety plate that blocks the firing pin from striking the primer unless the trigger is pulled (this is in case the click stops fail). Simply put, he shot her. It's just a question of intention and negligence in my book.

I love how that the title and cover for the book "Comedy Is Murder" is an homage to the Smith's "Meat Is Murder" album. I always thought someone should've done an album called "Vegetable Is Manslaughter" and use a B&W picture of Bugs Bunny in a helmet eating a carrot.
