EDIT: she passed away in February of 2021. Thank you to everyone who wished her well. ******************************************** My mom has been an alcoholic for almost 2 decades. 4 seizures, and liver cirrhosis that she managed to stay sober long enough to beat before going back to drinking. Two broken arms, two open head injuries. 1 stay at a mental hospital, 2 stays in rehab. Called the cops on her once for driving drunk, and almost again for stealing my car. She goes into withdrawals within 6 hours of not having a drink. She has been on every medication listed, seen 3 different therapists. I dont know what rock bottom is for her. The long term effects of alcohol abuse can have fatal consequences for your body earlier than people think. I just had a 28-year old with acute pancreatitis followed with multi organ failure caused by longterm alcohol abuse and another patient of mine died aged 36 from liver failure. Just please stop drinking as soon as possible while the liver can still regenerate! I wish you all a lot of strength!

@Amiss player Because often the defects aren't visible on echography and you discover it only after birth (only severe ones, with evident cardiologic matters or malformations are visible ; the mental ones are totally invisible for example)! Besides, if the pregnancy was discovered too late, there's no abortion possible. And even if abortion is available...would you take an abortion because the echography says the child have a tiny nose or such? It's not written clear as water "Look I'm like that because of alcohol", it's only after birth we recognize the "pattern" of malformations. (or if we know the woman is an heavy drinker, but isn't that often hidden facts?) So don't say it's not a matter, it is in reality. And when you think about children being abandon, no doubt that many would, left in orphanage and never taken because of the amount of extracare they would need.

Alcohol is self medicating for those with PTSD. I was diagnosed 30 years ago and I have been sober for 30 of the last 36 years, when I relapse it is about trauma and ptsd. Alcohol is the easiest legal available medication for PTSD. I am not using that as an excuse , but when I “ fall into a trauma hole” ( something triggers the ptsd from severe child abuse ) I drown myself. COVID triggered me and many others. Lots of COVID relapses. I have 40 days sober. But thanks for at least recognizing that trauma and ptsd play a huge roll in why people struggle to stay sober. I am 66 and just realized how much the ptsd affected my life and sobriety . Happy to be sober 40 days, and learning new ways to deal with ptsd .

Idk how old you are you prolly pretty young or as old as me but I been an alcoholic since I was 13 years old I’ve destroyed so many relationships because of my drinking for a long amount of time. My grandfather was a constant drinker and he killed the relationship with my grandmother and is barely latching on to the relationship with my mother and my uncle (his daughter and his son) to this very day. I know that alcoholism is genetic because of my grandfather and I’m suffering from it rn. The important thing is to never give up on any of your loved ones, maybe you need to leave them so they can hit rock bottom so they can realize how much drinking is affecting they lives and people around them and that’s when they’ll realize they need to give up alcohol. 2 years alcohol free and I'd like to share my story. I started drinking every now and again in highschool as many teens a quest to have "fun". My family had never been associated with alcohol but my dysfunctional friends were. When I got to college I joined a frat and got introduced to unsupervised underage drinking and from there it became a normal part of my 20s. I drank in bars and in night clubs, I drank with family and I drank with friends, I drank alone and I drank in public, but I didn't recognize the signs of my alcoholism until I was 30. Around that age I began to experience relationship, emotional problems and at times physical, that's when sobriety became a struggle as well. For the nest 6 years it was on and off, weeks sober followed by weekend benders. I knew well what I was up against but I always thought that I was loosely in control, but I was wrong. All the whiIe got married and even had a son, but I knew I had to quit because it was impossible to be a good father or husband if alcohol was my "gremlin", but I never knew what it would take. October 1st 2020 I woke up after a weekend of drinking with an odd pain in my abdomen and that was my sign. I vowed to never drink again for my family and myself, but the pain continued for over a year. It is gone now and all the doctor visits and test have never indicated and health concerns. I have been fortunate. If you need help, I may have some good advice that I didn't mention in my story but I would be happy to share.

as a recovered alcoholic of about 5 years, who drank periodically for 20 years ... I claim alcoholism is an incredibly complex disease of several components ... social, physical, psychological ... I had hoped you would get into the dynamics of an alcoholic's metabolic disorders explaining why alcohol is poisonous specifically in an alcoholics body .. but you really didn't get into that. I personally have not responded well to any form of therapy (A.A., counseling, group, etc.) & only much later in life , faced with homelessness did I find the courage to say "enough" ... in my opinion, A.A. .. which was formulated in the 1930s lacks broad appeal to alcoholics in the 21st century & is horribly outmoded and literally the meetings are peopled by non-alcoholics, transgenders, crack addicts, ... the A.A. message is badly carried and people in meetings today feel they can speak at length even after professing to be non-alcoholic or even having a very short period of sobriety. As far as the pills and medicines you mentioned, I have been prescribed many in the past and I cannot claim to have been positively affected by any of them. Only after hitting rock bottom, losing every thing and living in homeless shelters did I find the solution to avoiding alcohol. Alcohol is a highly addictive drug that is unregulated in society. It is a great evil and not worth the cost in human life it claims for the small benefit it gives to those who enjoy it. Today I use nutritional supplements, physical exercise, purified (non fluoridated) water, meditation to maintain an attitude appropriate to abstinence and being able to cope with the demands of reality and emotional balance. I have forced myself to attend A.A. despite how utterly horrible many meetings can be .. because an alcoholic speaks an alcoholic's language & what I hear in these A.A. meetings lately is not my language ...

I don't consider myself to have any real alcohol problems, and dont drink that often but when i drink i always drink way too much to the point of vomiting and then i keep drinking, its always been like this, i just cant seem to have that self dialog or self talk in the moment of when im drinking to decide when to stop. Now im watching this hungover and wondering if i have an actual problem and should just stop drinking all together, hmm..

I feel real bad for those who struggle to initially quit. I am an alcoholic myself but I dont struggle putting it down and if I ever found myself in this predicament was because I willingly and knowingly put myself here. I had quit drinking twice in the last 6 years already and both times that I quit I suffered moderately from withdrawals but I never had trouble quitting for a long period. If I did end up drinking again its because there was a reunion or function and while I would be offered alcohol in a limited capacity I would take some and even turn some down which would lead people into thinking that I had my shit together and I would to some extent. At first I started moderately drinking only on some weekends and in moderation but slowly I would evolve to 1 extra day of drinking until eventually I was drinking every day again then upping the amount I would drink per day. I recently quitted a couple weeks ago again (this is my third time) after a year of straight drinking 6-12pks of +8.8% IPAs beers that I would drink on a daily basis with a few shots of liquor on some nights. I know Im an alcoholic because once I stop drinking I get headaches, chest pain, racing heart, tremors, profuse sweating, and dangerously high blood pressure. I would go sometimes to the ER or my PCP if my anxiety got the best of me and they always advised rehab so I can have my symptoms in check and my condition monitored but I always trooped on and never did rehab. I guess Im lucky in that regard most people especially with anxiety like mine would cave in for help and there is nothing wrong with that. Not doing something is the worst thing you can do. One of my biggest flex is that I always keep alcohol in my room and if I have the self control in not drinking any of it then I should have no issues quitting, and safe to say it always works for me when Im trying to clean up my act though I know is not a logical approach for everyone. I have no plans on quitting drinking forever, instead I aim for more realistic goals of long term sober periods and moderately drinking again once I achieved most of my health goals like losing weight and maintaing a healthy weight and getting a good lab work results. I could keep it steady like that but my fault currently lies in my lack of companionship, most of friends are married now and it leaves me alone with nobody to be around with and with my spare time I usually end up drinking again. It doesnt help that Im socially awkward at making new friends or going out on dates and my anxiety usually ends up getting the best of me. My last relationship my ex broke up with me because I coud not balance it at that time as I had many personal issues and family loss being the main factor, I would drink too much then out of nowhere go cold turkey and try focusing only on myself pushing us apart, she was also an alcoholic but she knew how to better balance it out than me or maybe she just had less on her plate to worry about but I know if she were to quit like me she would be a trainwreck also. In the end though its probably for the best for both of us. Now I feel like I have a better grip of myself in managing my anxiety without the need for meds and coming to terms with loss. Right now I just feel lonely, I try to reinvigorate my hobbies but that only lasts for so long. I feel like I could have better control this time around and as I try to clean up my act I will try to find someone that can help keep me steady and grow with and not rebound for a 4th time because I may not recover from that one. I just thought Id share that with some of y'all if you can relate or see how negatively alcohol affects you so perhaps it can be your motivation. Take it from me a 3rd time rebounder alcoholic, I may not be as severe as others to be labeled as a tragedy but a cautionary tale getting there this is probably my last wake up call forreal.

Some people think it's the first manifestation of withdrawal effects but the fact that it necessarily occurs after an intoxication might mean it's more related to the metabolism of products of the alcoholic drink (ethanol & others) that produce certain effects on the body

What’s the word for what happens at 6:50? I’ve binge drank every Friday night for 10 years and recently stopped and noticed that roughly a week after this happens, I’m very interested as it would indicate physical addiction can occur through binge drinking aswell and not just chronic daily drinking😱

Alcoholism becomes physical, to the point where you die without it during withdrawal. One of the deadliest, the costliest, the cheapest, progressive. No matter what alcoholism is accidental by drinking too much (different levels)m but mostly it is about isolation and loneliness. The lonelier the more you drink, the more you drink the lonelier. Most are quite unsympathetic, however the science is there.....as for the psych only specific traits. Big luv hang tough

Thanks for mentioning the liver one I shall have a look. I quit drinking because it caused many problems in my life for many years including putting me in the company of people that took harder drugs such as crack and heroin. Whichever way I look at it ALCOHOL was always the key player in every wrong move I made in my life. List of negative effects alcohol had on my life: Killed at least 6 relationships with girlfriends. 17 short prison sentences Loss of employment (in some good jobs well good for me anyway) Lowered my inhibitions to the point that I took class A drugs and had a 13 year habit on those (now quit) Damaged family relationships (at the time) Cost lots of money (hurts now thinking about it) Was given a 4 year driving ban in 1999 for drink driving Tainted reputation (hated by many) I'm glad I quit everything that was bad for my life Now rebuilding and happy:)

I haven’t drank for a few hours and I’m so scared I feel horrible side effects from not drinking. Im so so scared

well, meaning people put forward, have views with kindness and hope. There is much literature regarding alcoholism and also many scientific studies. Not withstanding all the above the answer is very simple, not easy but simple. Stay away from alcohol one drink one day at a time it took me a long painful and destructive time to accept that simple message and one day at a time has turned into 39 years. I’m not particularly proud, just grateful to be alive and sober
