My sponsor keeps telling me that I am in step 1, I am in a rehab program, and he said these are steps not questions, and so is there a specific way to go through the steps I'm feeling like it's not this complicated? I have been going to meetings, going to church, enduring all that is forced upon us that is in lectures, so how can I move past step one if sponsor keeps telling me I'm in step one? And secondly why is it up to a sponsor to say what step you're on? I thought this was a me problem and me program, as in individually?

Through the Word of God I have gotten closer to and knowing of God - through Jesus Christ and his Word. Thats not religious

I never had been stood the concept of Christianity which says a deity love s all but yet practices exclusion and how a personal relationship with Jesus is vital when we can't know someone personally that's been dead for 2000 years .I'm gay can't mind out of a 20 yr addiction anysuggestions to n how I can reclaim sanity without religion as a gay man?

Religion is obviously nothing to delve into. These questions will trip you up. Basics are necessary at this point in your recovery. Find something you can put your faith into. Being gay is the last thing to worry about.

Find a spirituality based upon honesty, and put the plug in the jug. That will help to restore your sanity.

GOD= good orderly direction, a group of drunks, the great out doors, gift of desperation, you higher power can be ANYTHING so long as it’s both greater than & outside of you, in other words, anything but your Self (ego).

I don’t know if you’ll ever see this but I’m gay too. I am a sober member of AA, I have worked the steps with a sponsor, and I’m a Christian. My life has been completely transformed with the help of my higher power and by working the steps. Do you believe that AA has worked for me, and that a power greater than myself has restored me to sanity? Then you are halfway to coming to believe that a power greater than yourself could restore you to sanity. Resentment. One of my biggest resentments was at God for making me gay out of this stemmed a huge fear that I would never be loved, and a heightened self consciousness that I wasn’t fitting in around other guys, and then I just felt different from basically the majority of society. Along with this came a whole lot of anger and I even became resentful of myself. Turning to alcohol as a solution to my problems only created more problems. I drank because I drank. In writing the 4th step, I was able to see all of my fear and self-centeredness centered in this resentment. That a lot of times, my part in everything was trying to play God, control things, and run the show on my own will. That my own knowledge was limited, that I wasn’t God, that I didn’t know everything, and that fact has brought me a lot of peace. In reading the big book I found an answer to this riddle I’ve long been puzzled by, on page 69 it reads: “In this way we tried to shape a sane and sound ideal for our future sex life. We subjected each relation to this test-was it selfish or not? We asked God to mold our ideals and help us to live up to them. We remembered always that our sex powers were God-given and therefore good, neither to be used lightly or selfishly nor to be despised and loathed.” Now, I can turn away from this resentment toward God and trust that He has a plan for me, that my sex powers are God given and therefore good, that I am not to despise my sexual nature, and that today, I no longer need to worry about this great mystery I can’t understand. I am simply playing the role God assigned me to the best of my ability. Jesus never mentions one word about gay people in the Bible. The Bible has been misinterpreted. In context, the 6 verses that are commonly used to condemn homosexuality- were actually referring to older men who raped little boys. The word “homosexual” did not exist in biblical times. The Bible has been twisted to conform to a political agenda. This interpretation is nothing of what we know modern homosexuality to be. A loving relationship with another human being is not a sin. A sin is something that separates you from God. The sinful nature is described in the Bible as originating out of selfishness. There is a way out of selfishness, you can depend on God, you can be of service to others, and you can rid yourself of self-pity. God loves all his children. You are beautifully and wonderfully made in His image. Go to meetings every day for 90 days. Find a sponsor. Pray every day whether you believe in God or not. Get 5 phone numbers from people in the rooms of AA and call them every day. Tell them honestly how you’re doing and ask them how they are doing. Work the steps with your sponsor. It works if you work it.
