Alcohol Ink Jewelry - Make Earrings That Look Like Glass - Really!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Alcohol ink jewelry is fun to make because alcohol ink is such an easy (messy!) medium to work with. As you learn how alcohol ink reacts on different surfaces, you realise the potential for making earrings and other jewelry is huge.
Following on from my last alcohol ink tutorial in which I also showed you how to make earrings, I am showing you another, faster method for making beautiful earrings using blended alcohol inks.
Alcohol inks are very messy and will stain your hands, so be sure to use rubber gloves when you try this project.
In this DIY alcohol ink project, I also show you how to make sure the run off ink is not wasted. I show you how to use Yupo paper underneath the earrings when you color them so you can create a lovely abstract background to use in other projects.
Alcohol ink is expensive so we don't want to waste a drop!
After watching this craft tutorial, you will know how to make beautiful earrings very quickly using alcohol inks.

    Hi Lou, thank you for letting me know. If you want to watch it again, you can turn on the captions or read the transcript to clarify what I’m saying. I have no idea why some people can hear it and some can’t. It’s fine on all my devices but I know the sound is for some people on their devices. I do record at a higher volume now to try and make it audible on all devices but unfortunately, I can’t do anything about this one. Thanks for watching and reaching out💕🙏

I hope you have lots of fun experimenting - the effects you can get with the inks are so cool, it’s gets a bit addictive - I just love playing with them. Don’t do what I did though - after telling everyone to wear gloves, I was playing around with the Mermaid blue ink with NO GLOVES🙄and tipped a whole lot onto my hand by accident. The edges of my nails are still blue and my skin is very dry from where I tried to scrub it off😱Thanks again and enjoy experimenting.😍

    Hi Susan, thanks for your comment. I actually can’t remember - I am so sorry, that’s terrible! I was lucky with mine because they were pretty stable after they dried but a few people contacted me to say the alcohol ink would need to be sealed to stop it rubbing off. All I can say is, experiment with some small pieces of glue first and see how long it takes. I’m pretty sure that different colours took longer to dry than others. I’m really sorry I’m not much help with this. My memory is terrible! 🥴Thanks so much for watching and reaching out. 🙏💕

    @@RainbowLane Hi again Gilly. If you don't have an air puffer like the one that you use, could you blow through a drinking straw instead ?

  • @RainbowLane

    @RainbowLane

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes you can definitely do that. The reason I prefer the puffer is because when I used to use a straw, I found I was taking a breath in right over the area where the alcohol ink is (instead of turning completely away first) and that is really not good for health reasons. If you make sure you NEVER take in a big lung full of alcohol ink fumes then you could use a straw but I wouldn’t advise it. When I was blowing through a straw, I tended to take in really deep breaths each time my puff ran out. And I would be so completely engrossed in blowing the ink around that I would hardly move my mouth away from the straw to take my next deep breath - that’s very bad. So if you do use a straw, stay mindful of the need to turn towards an open window each time you you take a breath in. I’m very sensitive to any kind of fumes in art and craft supplies and I have to have windows wide open.

  • @RainbowLane

    @RainbowLane

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Cynthia, you could try that and see what happens. You’d get a different effect I’m sure. Maybe make your own gel pad with glycerin and gelatin powder rather than experiment on an expensive brand name one. There are plenty of people using alcohol inks on gelli plates on KZread so I’m guessing it’s fine. I have played with alcohol inks on gelli plate before with no issues but I haven’t tried what you suggested. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. 🙏💕

    Thank you! No I didn't and I am not sure if you could use resin. I have never worked with resin because of the fumes it gives off. I'm also not sure about glazing them either - maybe I'll try it and see what happens. I just left them as they are but if anyone was making them to sell or give as presents, you probably would need to seal them somehow to stabilise the inks. Hope that helps. • @RainbowLane

    @RainbowLane

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Britt, thanks for watching - no I hardly ever use anything like that because I have a thing about using aerosols as they upset my chest really fast - I used to have a spray booth with an extractor fan but I don’t have that any more, so I don’t use aerosols inside the house. The only aerosol I ever use is spray glue and I have to wait for a calm day with no wind so I can do it outside😂 The inks are really stable on all the earrings I have made, nothing is rubbing off at all. I’ve been wearing them a lot and nothing has come off at all. Thanks again for watching and taking time to comment.🙏💕

    Hi Britt, if you can cope with using the spray on sealer, it’s probably a good idea, especially for paintings that will be displayed or sold on. I’ve never produced any alcohol ink work that is worthy of being put on the wall🥴. I’ve seen some amazing stuff that alcohol ink artists have done though. My explorations over the last few years have never progressed beyond working on small substrates to use in crafts. Even when I paint using acrylics, I work small, usually A4 and then do a really good scan which I have printed much larger onto a box canvas. I did try sealing my glue creations with Dimensional Magic but I found putting glue on glue doesn’t work! But it does work on other surfaces. Lovely talking to you Britt - have you got your paintings online? Would love to see what you do. 💕

    A really dumb question…what is upo paper? Is that like a butcher paper?

  • @RainbowLane

    @RainbowLane

    2 жыл бұрын

    Not dumb at all - a perfectly sensible question if you never heard of Yupo paper before. It’s a synthetic paper. I just got this off the internet because it explains better than I can: ‘Yupo is a synthetic paper made from polypropylene used in art predominantly, alongside alcohol inks but is sometimes touted as a “non-absorbent” watercolour paper, which in and of itself is a strange concept to wrap your head around.’ It’s a lovely ’paper’ to work with. Hope that answers your question. You can buy tiny little sample pads from some art suppliers. There are various thicknesses of Yupo - I think I got a set of three tiny little pads once in the U.K. from Jackson’s Art Supplies online. Worth getting to have a try with it before you buy a big pad - it’s quite expensive. Thanks for watching. 🙏
