What I gleaned from this, is: 1. People love to do their drinking elsewhere, especially in the Caribbean. 2. Eastern Europe pretty much stays pickled.

Where are England and Scotland!? We're supposed to be massive piss heads! We didn't even sneak into the top 20! 😂

The graph shows spirit consumption per person: whisky, brandy, vodka, rum, gin etc; therefore this does not include beer, cider, wine etc. In the UK beer and wine is predominantly drunk rather than spirits. PS Cheers! xx

10 liters of pure alcohol equates to about 700 beers, a bit conservatively. That's 2 beers per day every day, or 14 beers per week. That's a lot of drinking per year for a single person. For a whole population it's quite mind boggling.

@@deangregoric4735 I think it's a lot anywhere. If you drink 3 beers every single day, you have a huge problem, and you're not sober. Way less than half of the entire German population do this, so the ones picking up the slack are probably drinking at least 12 beers per day on average.

would work better if you didn't rescale the graph constantly so the top country is always the same size bar -- you could then see total consumption easier, rather than just relative - at the start the top country was over 11L/year, but it looks the same amount as the final top country which was only 7L/year

What about holiday destinations. Cyprus is way up there for holiday makers drinking excessively.

@@_Rustodian Dubai's population tripled in size through the early 70s, owing to the oil boom there, which saw a lot of expansion, an huge influx of workers and a bit of tourism, continuing into the 80s. In the 70s through to the 80s Abu Dhabi also expanded significantly and had a large influx of foreign workers, and, like Dubai, developed tourism as part of a plan to have a source of income when the oil ran out. Answer, from what I know of friends and googling, is that workers first then tourists did a lot of drinking in the late 20th century.
