What a strange career Graham Bonnet has had! He has/had one of the best voices in rock & metal...got paired up with some of the greatest guitarists ever - Ritchie Blackmore, Michael Schenker, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Steve Vai - and yet most people still don't know who he is.

He didn’t have the songwriting talent of the Dios or Coverdales of the world and never really played the role of frontman well. Voice alone didn’t carry him to the heights.

He was only an unknown R&B pub singer with no album prior to Rainbow stints. Someone in Rainbow introduced him to Blackmore after Dio left and made him into a screaming monster which he didn't like a bit. Bizarre occasion for a great talent..

Recently re-discovered this album on CD (wore out the tape years ago). It's really amazing, it has Vai's whole bag of tricks - the stereo delay at the beginning (which he used later on 'Hina'), the tapping riff on the chorus. But they're all solid, musically, not just gimmicks. And love Vai or not, there's no denying he's one of THE most stylistically recognizable guitarists around.

OMG, so totally spaced on this song. Loved this song then, love it now, and appreciate the video more than ever. A part of this, a prelude to the movie Crossroads. Vai is such a treasure, legendary talent.

The angel devil guy at the beginning is Frazier Smith, a mid 80's DJ in the LA area. he had a tv show that was funny as hell. I saw this version of Alcatrazz at Chuck Landis Country Club in LA, summer 1985- awesome. Roth was there that night to talk with Vai, and the rest as they say, was history... cheers.

I know how frustrating a go it can be for a completest and Simon, he is a beautiful man. The music world is even more a blessed place because of him.

The first time I heard this song/saw this video I distinctly remember thinking “I don’t know who that guy is playing the guitar, but he is REALLY good!” Ten million years later, I still think Steve Vai is the probably the most all-around talented players* in the business. (As a kid) he displaced Al Dimeola, who displaced Eddie Van Halen, who displaced Steve Howe, who displaced Jimmy Page for that title. *that means: he’s able to play it, write it, read it, arrange it, score it AND trim his own hair while doing it.
