Albuquerque, New Mexico - Driving Tour 4K

Albuquerque (/ˈælbəkɜːrki/ (About this soundlisten) AL-bə-kur-kee, Spanish: [alβuˈkeɾke]),[a] abbreviated as ABQ, is the most populous city in the U.S. state of New Mexico.[5] The city's nicknames are The Duke City and Burque, both of which reference its 1706 founding by Nuevo México governor Francisco Cuervo y Valdés as La Villa de Alburquerque. Named in honor of then Viceroy the 10th Duke of Alburquerque, the Villa was an outpost on El Camino Real for the Tiquex and Hispano towns in the area (such as Barelas, Corrales, Isleta Pueblo, Los Ranchos, and Sandia Pueblo). Since the city's founding, it has continued to be included on travel and trade routes including Santa Fe Railway (ATSF), Route 66, Interstate 25, Interstate 40, and the Albuquerque International Sunport.[6][7] The 2019 census-estimated population of the city is 560,513, making Albuquerque the 32nd-most populous city in the United States and the fourth-largest in the Southwest. It is the principal city of the Albuquerque metropolitan area, which had 915,927 residents as of July 2018.[8]
Albuquerque serves as the county seat of Bernalillo County,[9] and is in north-central New Mexico. The Sandia-Manzano Mountains run along the eastern side of Albuquerque, and the Rio Grande flows north to south through its center, while the West Mesa and Petroglyph National Monument make up the western part of the city. Albuquerque has one of the highest elevations of any major city in the U.S., ranging from 4,900 feet (1,500 m) above sea level near the Rio Grande to over 6,700 feet (2,000 m) in the foothill areas of Sandia Heights and Glenwood Hills. The civic apex is found in an undeveloped area within the Albuquerque Open Space; there, the terrain rises to an elevation of approximately 6,880 feet (2,100 m), and the metropolitan area's highest point is the Sandia Mountains crest at an altitude of 10,678 feet (3,255 m).
The economy of Albuquerque centers on science, medicine, technology, commerce, education, entertainment, and culture outlets. The city is home to Kirtland Air Force Base, Sandia National Laboratories, Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute, Presbyterian Health Services, and both the University of New Mexico and Central New Mexico Community College have their main campuses in the city. Albuquerque is the center of the New Mexico Technology Corridor, a concentration of high-tech institutions, including the metropolitan area being the location of Intel's Fab 11X In Rio Rancho and a Facebook Data Center in Los Lunas. Albuquerque was also the founding location of MITS and Microsoft. Film studios have a major presence in the state of New Mexico, for example Netflix has a main production hub at Albuquerque Studios. There are numerous shopping centers and malls within the city, including ABQ Uptown, Coronado, Cottonwood, Nob Hill, and Winrock. The city is the location of a horse racing track and casino called The Downs Casino and Racetrack, and the Pueblos surrounding the city feature resort casinos, including Sandia Resort, Santa Ana Star, Isleta Resort, and Laguna Pueblo's Route 66 Resort.
The city hosts the International Balloon Fiesta, the world's largest gathering of hot-air balloons, taking place every October at a venue referred to as Balloon Fiesta Park, with its 47-acre launch field.[10] Another large venue is Expo New Mexico, where other annual events are held, such as North America's largest pow wow at the Gathering of Nations, as well as the New Mexico State Fair. Other major venues throughout the metropolitan area include the National Hispanic Cultural Center, the University of New Mexico's Popejoy Hall, Santa Ana Star Center, and Isleta Amphitheater. Old Town Albuquerque's Plaza, Hotel, and San Felipe de Neri Church hosts traditional fiestas and events such as weddings, also near Old Town are the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, Albuquerque Museum of Art and History, Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, Explora, and Albuquerque Biological Park. Located in Downtown Albuquerque are historic theaters such as the KiMo Theater, and near the Civic Plaza is the Al Hurricane Pavilion and Albuquerque Convention Center with its Kiva Auditorium. Due to its population size, the metropolitan area regularly receives most national and international music concerts, Broadway shows, and other large traveling events, as well as New Mexico music, and other local music performances.

This is both an excellent video and typed description of my hometown. I was born and raised in Albuquerque, but moved away a long time ago in 1994. I'm aware the city has changed so much since then, unfortunately for the worse in some respects, especially concerning drugs, crime, and homelessness. It's a tremendous shame since the city is in a naturally beautiful setting with almost ideal weather overall. It also possesses so much culture, history, and identity. I like the artistic and architectural developments on a civic level that have taken place relatively recently. I have lived in San Diego for over sixteen years now and am looking to move to a more affordable place. My soul craves to move back home, but it's imprudent. I may move to a city that has similarities to Albuquerque, such as Tucson, San Antonio, or El Paso. Thanks again for your work and presentation. 😁

I too moved away from my home town of Albuquerque in 1992 as a result of the crime .nut I certainly miss the authentic Mexican food, in Colorado Its like old Mexico not new Mexican or "Christmas style ",abd I'm always going to miss the magnificent beauty of the hot air balloon festival.

Thoroughly enjoyed this ride as a passenger. The drive downtown was nice but especially liked the view down Central Ave all the way to Old Town. Best video I've seen about ABQ so far. Thanks. Peace.

During my visit in Albuqurque, a Latino/ Mexican young man Deliberately (!!) hit the front of my car !! Just because I pulled in before him getting out of the parking lot. He yelled at me in rage : "PULL PVER!!!'' I am a 65 year old woman out of state. My license plate clearly told that I am a VISITOR/ tourist from the East Coast. He blocked my way by pulling over in front of me. Then he started DRIVING BACKWARDS TOWARD MY CAR. STOPPED FOR A SECOND, THEN WENT RIGHT into MY CAR AND Hit it!!! :((((( Unbelievable MONSTROCITY !!!

I’ve been here for over 30 yrs, I have to say unfortunately New Mexico ( especially Albuquerque) is not a very friendly city. We have a lot of homeless people that are rude. We have a bad drug problem out here and the locals aren’t that great either. This would be the last place I’d travel to, be very aware of where you are and your surroundings, don’t go driving around at night and spend some money on a nice , safe hotel .

What you mention is true. I was born and raised in Albuquerque, but left in 1994. I know it has changed so much since then, unfortunately for the worse in some regards. I live in San Diego and want to move back home, but I don't see that as a wise decision. I am looking to a different affordable city that shares some characteristics with Albuquerque, such as Tucson, San Antonio, or El Paso. That's a shame since Albuquerque has so much to offer such as natural, cultural, architectural, and artistic beauty, in spite of its flaws. For me, the cons outweigh the pros. 😔

Michael Bartee, the drug addicts and dealers don’t give a crap who’s president and sures hell don’t give a crap about politics. As an out of state tourist and traveler you have to find out what areas you shouldn’t go thru to avoid being confronted by drug addicts. Especially at night. Don’t ever try to get a room on central street, it’s full of hookers, dealers , theft and drug addicts 24/7 . With every state, do your homework before in safety before making reservations.
