Cause of Death is by far my favorite! This was the album that made me a fan and I also really like their first album Slowly We Rot! I’ll never forget when a buddy of mine played me Cause of Death all the way back in the early 90’s. I was blown away and I immediately went back to check out Slowly We Rot! Obituary pretty much got me into Death Metal and Cause Of Death is the one that did it for me! After listening to Obituary I started listening to so many other Death Metal bands and the rest is history! Im really digging these album ranking videos and I would absolutely love to see you rank all the Death albums. As always this has been a great video and I look forward to seeing the next one! 🤘🏻

1993 and 1994 respectively + social issues instead of gore stuff was discussed. Bit of a weird time in metal… Morbid Angel’s Domination was also seen as a sell out record and “groove metal”. 😳

100% agree with you. World Demise is fucking great. Always been my favorite Obituary album and I never understood why it is such an underrated or criticized record. Probably because there is some experimentations on this album that some narrow minded Death Metal fans can’t stand. The last album in my opinion where they tried to improve there sound and songwriting and made something new

Cause of death is my favorite for sure, one of the best death metal album ever. Also really fond of Frozen in time and The End Complete. This is my top 3. It is a bit hard for me to make a top 10 album list as some of the albums are a bit similar when it comes to quality

Curiously enough we have very similar ranks with one exception: a) I kinda got a bit tired after Xecutioner's Return (still listened to the next album and some songs from the ones that came after but nothing stuck with me). So IMO it goes like this: 7) Turned Into Ice / Xecutioner's Return: Yup... your typical Obituary albums and it's like what you said. You know what you're in for once you press play so no surprises here, just their good old sound . 5) Back From The Dead: Also your meat and potatoes Obituary but the fast songs on this holy Molly! Especially that opener Threatening Skies... What a track! 4) Slowly We Rot: I know there's a lot of people that simply love this album but IMO although it already shows what Obituary is about to be for the remainder of its career the dudes are also still trying to find the strong points regarding their peculiar sound and that only will be achieved later in their sophomore. Nevertheless Suffocation, Intoxicated, Bloodsoaked and especially the title track are absolutely brutal. 3) The End Complete: I think this album is way more solid than the band's debut. To me more than dark it sounds tight as hell, really dense. It is perhaps Obituary's most "muscular" record (in lack of a better word). The majority of the album bets everything in grinding your eardrums at a relatively low pace that flow into crushing breakdowns and does it masterfully (like in Dead Silence, In The End Of Life. Corrosive or the title track). But even when the boys hit the gas everything sounds wonderful. Take Back To One, a beast of a song and actually my favorite from the whole album. Without shadow of doubt a great album. Ok... then we also have a huge leap and IMO we have two number ones: 1a) Cause Of Death: The first Obituary album I listened to and man... the ambiance of the damn thing is mesmerizing. First of James Murphy simply propels the led dpt to new heights. Then even the way the songs are listed and the passages between them are unbelievable. After a way more refined version of what their debut brought us in Infected the reverse effect and low pitched growl that leads to Body Bag is a marvel of its own but the song... absolutely perfect DM groove. And what to say about its fake fade out as Choped In Half kicks in from nowhere? And not to mention that after that we're gifted with a masterful rendition of Celtic Frost's Circle Of The Tyrants. Dying is merely ok and once again the breath taking passage to the break neck Find The Arise does wonders to a by itself great song. Another great intro and a out of this world solo carries the excellent title track. And till the last second it's the same: excellent passages/ intros, excellent riffing, excellent solos, excellent compositions. In sum: excellent. 1b) World Demise: So World Demise is Obituary's Black album because the band no longer goes uptempo during the solos and put samples in a handful of songs? AHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAH... Now there's some people there smoking some really strong stuff. Don't Care is a beast of an opener: recovers the groove of songs like Body Bag and adds a few more RPMs. World Demise's beginning also seems like something took out of Cause Of Death and then it starts to get really chaotic (in a good way) to an apotheosis at the end. Redefine's the one of the three only strongly groovy oriented song here (this one mainly due to the drums) along with Solid State and Paralyzing but its heaviness is also present (BTW isn't that sample RHCP's Power Of Equality?). Paralyzing and Lost are two quite simple songs but that even underlines more their slow paced crushing onslaught. Splattered is a slightly more complex and even heavier version of the later and the Final Thoughts' crescendo enters the scene and well... besides the simplicity of the riffage this song is simply amazing in every sense especially regarding composition witt and use of silence and iterations*. And finally Kill For Me simply destroys what's left of the room (all those bitching about this being commercial or pseudo groove listen to the damn song in the Dead live album without the sample... it's 100% Obituary, period). The use of samples only gave Obituary a wider span... their wonderfully picked and used in the record. As for the rest it's the band a bit slower but grinding every square milometer of your inner hearing. *Here's a joke song I recorded with a friend some years ago. If you wish I'll tell you what it's all about. Just for Obituary and cod true fans LOL : kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y6yitqWfY8W1g8Y.html

@@OldHead Well this was an old metal parody thing me and a friend of mine had going back in the day. On this particular one we spotted how Tardy often shouted something like "L'HOOOW!" and how it sounded like something really familiar to us here in Portugal. Our national plate is called "bacalhau" which is basically dried salted cod (it sounds like "Bah-Cah-L'how"... that's what I'm repeating in the beginning of the track). Then it all unfolded into even more absurdity:how the song depicts the process of scaling and pouring salt as torture (in great Death Metal style LOL), the many ways to cook it and nonsense stuff like that. We laughed our asses out while recording it. Unfortunately this was merely the demo since I never managed to mix this properly and since then lost the master tracks.

I like several bands that stay within certain parameters, and I like many that jump all over the place. It's not for me to decide if a band changed for artistic reasons, or 'sold out' is not for me to determine. I either like it or not(and I like many different genres). That said, a couple bands, that I won't name, have obviously trend hopped. I don't love that, but again, if they make it reallly well, I can overlook that shit.

I have every Obituary album and have been a fan since 1989, so before I even start the video I'm going to say that Darkest Day, followed by Xecutioner's Return, followed by Inked In Blood are their worst albums. Cause of Death #1, The End Complete #2, World Demise #3. Okay, now I don't know because I've really enjoyed every Obituary album for the most part and they never really changed much. The self titled album really felt fresh and it's their best album, followed by Frozen in Time since their reunion. Edit: Finished the video and I pretty much agree with your ranking. I personally always felt Ralph was wrong for Obituary, he was a very technical guitar player in a non-technical band. I understand your decision to put World Demise #1, it's probably the only album where the band completely experimented with different sounds and it worked. Donald and Trevor had both done the Meathook Seed the year prior and I think it influenced them a bit. The only reason it's ranked lower for me is Cause of Death is my favorite, and because the levels are so low on World Demise I don't listen to it much. When I sync albums to my MP3 player the levels are so low that it comes out really quiet. I don't want quiet, I want loud lol. Same with Testament's The Legacy album, the levels are too low for me to enjoy on my headset. You didn't mention the horrendous death metal/rap crossover song Bullituary on Back From the Dead. Now I can handle a little rap/metal crossover, but this was the worst example of it for me. Total shit! Curious what did you think of the Tardy Bros. "Bloodline" album? I like it, but it feels kind of pointless because it just sounds like thrashier Obituary.

You're probably going to hate me for saying this, but I enjoy European melodic death metal a lot more than the standard American death metal. Ive tried multiple death metal bands from Obituary, Carcass, Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation and others. I have to be honest with myself; I like Amon Amarth, Dark Tranquillity, Insomnium and even Children of Bodom a lot more. I think the only straight up death metal band that I like is Death, and even with them, Symbolic and Sound of Perseverance are my two favorites from them. I think its because I prefer rythim over brutality. Great video, though. Keep doing more rankings.

After I bought my copy of death's leprosy a few months later I picked up my copy of slowly we rot and have been a fan since 1989 death and obituary are my favorite death metal bands. But I have to say cause of death was their best hands down I'm mean they had James Murphy enough said I can't believe most people say the end complete is the best man that album is way overrated I like that album but that snare drum sounds like crap that ruins the whole record. I know I'm not alone on this one that snare come on just because it was their best selling album doesn't mean it was the best. I do have to disagree about the production of xecutioners return that to me was one of their best production that album is thick as hell man the bass is in your face everything is at 10 damn good production at least that's how I like it I'm a bass player so I like it when the bass and drums don't get swallowed up by the guitar and vocals also some other great production would be dio master of the moon in my opinion some great production all the instruments are in the front instead of the bass and drums in the back ground where u have to strain your ear to hear the bass. I love all of obituary s albums not a bad one in the bunch and I'm glad u decided to a review of death metal albums and it doesn't hurt that it's one of my favorite death metal bands. Hey we all have our own opinions on which albums we think are the best I think it fun to see how other people rank albums it's not how I would rank them but hey to each their own and that's what makes it fun comparing your list to theirs it's all good I think a while back I heard u say u were from Houston guess what so am I oh if your not from Houston disregard this part.
