i adore will wood, so im happy that you enjoyed it! since im absolutely obsessed with his music, i figured i could tell you some stuff i know about the songs!! I... apologize in advance for the absurdly long wall of text. EIAL isn't a concept album, so there isn't any story. The album is a collection of tracks Will wrote from around 2011-2015. The 2020 remasters of EIAL & SELF-iSH are just minor adjustments to the mixes, with a few notable exceptions. 6up 5oh was written about Will's encounters with the police, and also it has a fun music video. The live version extends the title to 10-4 6up 5oh Cop-Out (Pro/Con). 10-4 is code used by law enforcement to acknowledge information over comms. Bones was written about a three day period in 2011 where he didn't eat anything. he has gone on to say the song isn't about anorexia though. Apparently the LSD line was improvised in a live performance... in front of his parents. and their friends. Front Street is about date r*pe. the monologue in the middle is actually a sample from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. It's omitted in the 2020 remaster. He gives a different monologue in his Backyard BBQ Live performance... which is pretty funny. Aikido is a form of martial arts that is designed to stop an opponent without any direct harm, so the song applies that concept to a relationship. Also, some people had interpreted that the song was about necrophilia (I apologize for playing with your eyes, but I’m obsessed with you, Holding breath by graveyards, salt over my shoulder). Will has said a few times that he absolutely hates that interpretation. The 2020 remaster includes a bonus section at the end of the song, which is apparently a scrapped version of the song. White Knuckle Jerk is about someone getting off to someone without them knowing. Will said it was inspired by how he felt that love in general was weird. Like, you can just fall in love with someone without them knowing or consenting to that? It's weird, man. Cover This Song is kinda uneventful. However, a fun interpretation I saw is that this song and Thermodynamic Lawyer are actually about the same relationship, just from different perspectives! It's probably not what will intended, but it's fun! Thermodynamic Lawyer is about a man in an abusive relationship who can't keep civil anymore. The lyrics read like things someone might say when blinded by anger. The opening of the song samples the movie "Liar Liar". The ending samples Bill Burr. Also, the G.F.D. in the song title stands for Go F*cking Die! The 2020 version of the song is often regarded in a bad light, since it fully omits the samples from the start and end of the song. Also, it has different vocal effects on a few of the lines, notably obscuring the line about the autism. People thought it was Will trying to bury it, but he said it was because he forgot what vocal effect he used and couldn't find it. Red Moon is, apparently, about the hedonic treadmill. It is the idea that all humans regardless of life circumstance have a baseline of emotion that they return to. The live version of the song from Will's first live album was taken off of streaming in 2021, because Will realized that the background vocalists weren't singing the words. I can't say I ever noticed. Lysergide Daydream is in fact about LSD! The song begins to fall apart near the end, just as one would crash from a drug high. The First Step opens with a reversed Serenity Prayer, which is what Alcoholics Anonymous meetings often open with. The song title is a play on the idea that, "The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem", and so the entire song is Will singing about the fact that he does have an alcohol problem. I distinctly remember reading that the "W!" at the end of the song refers to a specific brand of beer, but since comments have been auto disabled on the topic channel, I can't confirm it. He references the song in his standup comedy routine, which is the first result if you look up "Will Wood standup comedy". Jimmy Mushrooms is absolutely margaritaville. Jimmy Mushrooms is a character from Will's patreon exclusive zine called "The Prescription" The lyric, "End of the line gaining speed, Wrapping trees" implies that Jimmy got into a car accident. The crowd noise at the end of the song also kinda implies that. Chemical Overreaction is about someone trying drugs for the first time. A compound fracture is a bone fracture where the bone sticks out of the skin. It's also the only other song that has a music video. The opening of the song samples the movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. The slow outro is, intentionally or not, very similar to Skeleton Appreciation Day. In fact, the live version of the song from his first live album blends the two songs. The 2020 version of the song omits the movie sample. Everything is a lot is just a somber closer. Not sure what significance construction noises has, but anyway it leads into Destroy to Enjoy, which is listed as a separate track on the 2020 remaster. The song is about how people are quick to ignore the actual meanings of religious symbols and beliefs so that they may enjoy them. "Fuck your mystic wisdom, find your own way home from Bonnaroo, It's just one more religion, fuck your visions, we've done acid too". Something that blew my mind when I realized it, is that the lyric "Glory be satori but it's hallucinatory, And it's sure to be a story we can tell in Purgatory" was used in the song 2012 from SELF-iSH! I'll say that I don't think you should skip the Camp Here & There Soundtrack. It has some real bangers on it. Also, Will was in a band called A Verbal Equinox, which served as a little inspiration for one specific song from SELF-iSH. He has two live albums: The Real Will Wood & In Case I Die. The Real Will Wood actually has like 5 different versions, but the tracks are the same. It has some tracks that aren't on streaming, but they've been uploaded to youtube. It's also a movie, which is a mix of a mock-documentary and concert film. If you made it this far, i hope you got something out of my insane ramblings lmao. Anyway, I can't wait to see your reactions to the rest of Will's music!!!

I thought Destroy to Enjoy was about cultural appropriation. As a satirical character, they destroyed Buddhism and only took what they wanted from it. They cut down the Bodhi Tress and burned the Dalai Lama because they didn’t want to follow a leader or follow the path of a Buddha. They even said enlightenment is boring. However when he did drugs, he had visions and concluded that he’s the same as the buddhas. They like some of the famous people associated with Buddhism like Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu but they didn’t like the Dalai Lama. They also enjoy the Yin Yang tattoos but there’s no significance to any of what they appreciate. It’s all because they just picked preferences over cultural significance. As you mention, they also discount the meaning behind these things because it’s “just one more religion.” They destroyed any cultural value in order to enjoy it.

I played Skeleton Appreciation Day and Aikido! for an open mic, it was really fun, I even had the audience clap along with aikido so that was pretty cool unfortunately they didn’t have a piano where I performed so I couldn’t play Front Street (which is one of my favorites to play on keyboard; probably because it reminds me of Sweeney Todd for some reason lol) Anyway, great reaction to one of my favorite albums! I feel like he meant that while the lyrics are *literally* referring to disordered eating, metaphorically it’s about being vulnerable and accepting your insecurities. There are too many specific references to restrictive eating and obsession with skinniness for it to NOT be inspired by that.
