This the most heart wrenching thing I’ve seen in a long time. When she called for her baby to a silent cold ocean and no response came back. She even got back in the water to look for her baby knowing she could be eaten. It is a mother’s love and a mother’s pain.

Its probably not the first time she's lost a baby to a predator. This happens all the time in nature. But she'll go back into heat very quickly now that her baby is gone and she'll forget. All mammals are protective of their young. But they also forget them very quickly once they are gone.

You got to separate the mammalian attachment and look at it from the practical side of the situation. I mean it is sad but our own species die and suffer ever single day and very much in the same vein, might I add. Natural selection hasn’t stopped. It just took on a new guise and name. S

wilson blauheuer No no, that's not true, there is lots of fuckery in nature. Some birds have two chicks with the intention of only raising one, but having the other as a back up plan, or on the chance that it's an abundant food year. So the other chick dies, as it was always going to. Nature is super cruel, but that is jsut how evolution works, animals also suffer deeply, like you said. It's very sad when you think about it.

@Jacob Tyler Trust me, I know. I worked in that industry for years. I needed to work, or I would never have worked there. There’s a part of the brain called “Reptile brain” or whatever it’s name is. Scientists say it’s a part of other survival instincts. Because when it gets activated any other part of the brain shuts off (not the walking breathing etc part of course) and the reptile brain gets in full control. There’s 3 options to choose from. It's illegal to move pups away from a site but not illegal for a Mother or even a Mother & Pup to jump on the back of Your boat. Because in those instances, the animals did this, not the Human. She chose to get on the boat. You see the difference? It's not a Wildlife Crime. It only would have been Human Intervention if He threw Her off the boat, to Her death. She already made the decision to jump onto the boat Herself.

Animals do feel grief... It just depends on if they are in survival mode or not as to what they do in that moment. My Siamese cat lived to be 21 years old... and would've probably lived another 4 years easily, at least... maybe more... but his 'wife' was given away when I was in the military, or ran away, or was killed... never got the full story on that one and what little I was told ( given away ) was probably a lie. Never got an e-mail address or anything to check up... Anyways, the son, who was only 14 which was the one we kept, the others we gave to good homes.. ended up with a clot in his back either from jumping and hitting his back while we were getting groceries, or a clot simply developed / moved and blocked an artery... His entire rear was numb and cold. The vet said he wasn't in any pain so we didn't put him to sleep. Vet said he would die within a few days and there was nothing which could be done. He lasted 2 days and we did everything for him and never left him alone. Gave him the best food and anything he wanted. Let him lay outside in sun and kept him company. After he died, we had him cremated. but the father outlived his son, and maybe the wife?? not sure on that.. and I think one of the others died too... but he was there with his son. After his son died, he kept his body company for about 12+ hours until we had him picked up to be cremated. After that, he fell into a deep depression and didn't want to do anything anymore. He was grieving his son and he was just so sad. This was an outdoor cat for his entire 21 years and he knew to avoid cars. Never did anything to endanger his life in regards to machinery. He lived in several countries during his life. United States x2 properties, Canada, and Germany x2 properties. Always on a good diet, always cared for... was an amazing lap kitty too. He would sit like a human and meow when he wanted something. Incredibly intelligent. He committed suicide shortly after his son died by laying under my step-fathers car tire. Something he has never done in the past ( the under the car tire... obviously... ) as he only visited from time to time. He visited while I was at school and left before I came back... He died pretty quickly apparently. Not sure if this is the truth either. But, everyone around him was dying... outliving his son by 7 years is quite a lot, especially in cat years. He was alone aside from us. Even though we tried everything to be there for him; he was just depressed and was tired. I completely understand. I highly doubt it was an accident simply because of how intelligent he was, the fact he lived in multiple countries and was always an outdoor cat and always came home without ever having an issue. Many animals show emotion, personality, etc.. they grieve.. if a child is in danger they rush to their assistance. Animals will also rescue other animals so they understand when another is in trouble and needs help, help that they can provide and they do... so they can empathize. There are common ancestors which did have emotions - so it is highly unlikely it is purely learned behavior from just watching humans.

Also, I think the mama looking at the boater and then back towards where they came from... I think she wanted the person to turn around and go back in case the baby survived. She didn't want to leave the area until all hope was lost.... that is likely what she was trying to get across. Also, sound does carry over water so she was probably trying to direct her baby towards them... a dual purpose message... The human may have seen the baby get eaten, but she may not have....

@@therock-yr8tk where did you get your information? According to wikipedia "Population estimates made between 2004 and 2007 give a worldwide total of approximately 107,000 sea otters". In fact I don't have recent informations but I think they can't be 3000.
