Alaska Jet Ski & Helicopter Tours to Glaciers, Adventures in Whittier & Anchorage | Go North Ep 16

Alaska Jet Ski & Helicopter Tours to Glaciers, Adventures in Whittier & Anchorage | Go North Ep 16
Jet Ski to Glaciers & Helicopter in Chugach Mountains
Episode 16 takes us to Whittier Alaska where we explore the towns living arrangements in the Begich Towers then go Jet Skiing to Glaciers in Blackstone Bay.
Whittier is only accessible by air, water, or the one way tunnel that shares traffic with a train. The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel (aka the Whittier Tunnel) is a rough rock tunnel that is the only ground access to the city and until the early 2000's this tunnel was for trains only. Each end of the tunnel has long waiting areas where traffic lines up, and if no trains come street vehicles are allowed through the tunnel each half hour after the tunnel has cleared from opposing traffic.
We then head over to Anchorage first with a stop in Turnagain Arm to watch the Alaska bore tide surfers. In Anchorage a friend took us for a ride in a Robinson R44 helicopter into Alaska's Chugach Mountains all the way up to Lake George. Bob Kaufman spoke with us about life in Alaska before we head further north and get our first, but not last glimpse of the Aurora Borealis aka Northern Lights in Alaska.

It's even more interesting to ride a motorcycle through the Whittier Tunnel. They make us go last because, if we fall, the cars can't see us, they said. The two big fans in there make it even more memorable. Your excellent video brings back some memories, to say the least.

Your discussion on Kokonee salmon brought back memories of 1963 fishing on Chambers lake in Colorado just west of Fort Collins. Chambers lake has been a hatchery release for Kokonee salmon and lake trout for 60 years or longer. When you finish this adventure you should make Chambers lake one of your destinations. The entire area is absolutely gorgeous.

What a fantastic vlog . You were so fortunate tofly in a helicopter . Does Bob own the helicopter ? Decades agomwhile on an Alaskan cruise I got to fly through the Misty Fjords on a Sea Plane from the harbor in Ketchican . It was great being able to see Alaska from the Air . During the flight the pilot landed in a mountain top lake & he got out and stood on one of the pontoons to eat his lunch & so did I to take pictures & video w/my Sony 8mm camcorder . Before we took off I got to sit up front in the right seat w/the pilot . It was scary while the plane was getting up speed to take off the plane kept getting closer & closer to the end of the lake I didn't think the plane was going to clear the tops of the trees at the end of the lake my heart was in my throat I was so scared it seemed like the plane wasn't going to clear the tree tops but it did luckily . We all had headsets on like ya's did in the helicopter . The plane was an old single engine De Havilland . Also while in Juneau the group went on a morning whale watch in a jet powered boat w/o propellers so none of the sea life was harmed . It was foggy & exciting . In the afternoon that day the group we were suppose to fly on a helicopter that afternoon toa Glacier but the fog never cleared so all flying was cancelled for the day . The helicopter was suppose to land us on the glacier to walk around w/a guide in heavy jackets & other gear . I was so bummed out not getting to do it . I was told it's an experience that I would've remembered for the rest of my life .

Hello Mortons, I really enjoy much of your adventures. I was originally drawn to your channel through your detailed installation of your PV and Tesla battery installations. Now that it has been some time, and you've spent time with your current northern adventure, I am curious whether you would consider the Tesla installation again, or if you would choose/recommend the Battleborn batteries instead. My wife and I are prepping to purchase a trailer or small 5th wheel and do plenty of travelling, and do so on the cheap. We would greatly appreciate and respect your input and suggestions. Thanks, Rick P

It really depends on your needs and experience level, the Tesla's are cost effective, but challenging to safely operate . We love the drop in and safety of the BB. Personally I would stick with the BB's unless you need enormous power in a tight space and have the knowhow to safely install them.

I listened to your interview closely as I really wanted to learn about the differences between living in Alaska versus the lower 48. I found it interesting yet can't understand why you didn't ask the most prevalent question anyone who hasn't been there would want to know ...... how do you adjust to the relatively extreme winters ? All the talk about wonderful outdoor adventures but I'd would have liked to hear about the actual length of that season ? I was born and raised in a place that has snow on the ground 6 months of the year and could never do that again no matter how wonderful the potential.

Oh, my goodness, Tom and Cait, what a production!!! Seems everyone gets better and better with more and more sights to see and things to do! You guys are the best: ya' rock! Ques: How's the truck/camper holding up? Any changes you'd make? How's the solar system working? Keep up the GREAT work and Y'all Be Safe!

Great video as usual guys. Small comment (constructive I hope...) concerning the soundtrack. The imbalance level of the music vs. narration makes it difficult to find a good compromise. The music is too loud compared to the narration. Thank you.

Francois Panneton We agree! We’re older so when we turned the TV up enough to easily hear the narration the music nearly blasted us out of our chairs!

We fell into class A so $13 that was both directions as they only have tolls on the way in (since there is no other way out :)

Thanks! It takes 60-80 hrs editing for an episode like this, and unfortunately I got crazy sick halfway through this edit and couldent narrate. Just life!

Hard to say what is your "best" video but this one could be it. Thank you! Quick question: Which drone did you use?

When you get to a wrap up video, could you address how it was not being able to sit up in bed for so long? How long did it take to adjust and not bump your head every morning?

You probably never do but I think you should thank the LORD everyday for what he has allowed you to see. After all he is the CREATOR of it all. It is his and only his he just allows us to enjoy it. GENESIS Chapter 1 Verse 1 . In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. So that proves it is his and he has full ownership. Enjoy your journeys but give the LORD his due credit.

Great video, but - if you are going to complain about glaciers retreating, maybe you should skip your CO2 spewing jet ski / helicopter "adventure" - and, perhaps, your incredibly "climate change" unfriendly 4x4 truck - just saying.
