Alaska Excursions - Icy Strait Point | Island Princess

Icy Strait vs. Ketchikan: • Icy Strait Point vs. K...
We wanted to start a bit of a video series on the various Alaska excursions that are available, the excursions we did and what we thought about them on our trip. Today we're going to start off with our first stop on our Alaska cruise, Icy Strait Point.
We did our Alaska cruise with Princess Cruise Lines and we were aboard the Island Princess. We had never been to Alaska before but we knew we wanted to do some Whale Watching and that's one of the main things we did in Icy Strait Point.
We did the Bear Watching and While Watching excursion and we really enjoyed it. If you want to know more about Icy Strait point we have a video about that also.
Overall we really enjoyed Icy Strait Point and highly recommend it to anyone who's doing an Alaska cruise. With a great combination of easy to access food and excursion options right when you step off the ship you should have no problem finding something you want to do!

We were here in 2016 and it looks like the building where you get the excursions was built sometime after our cruise. In the area of the old cannery is where we were able to get on a bus into the town for $5 each and the return to the ship was included. We walked around and were at the boat dock there. On the way to town I asked the driver about the Alaskan Bush people. He told us that their boat the Integrity was tied up there. While taking some pictures some deer feeding on grass that was there. Later we met the deer again when they crossed the street in the middle of town . They had no problem with humans. Great place and great video! Thanks

Thank you so much for this video! I am planning my first cruise to Alaska for next year and while looking for excursions to book I didn't see anything appealing to me on Icy Strait Point. Now I'm glad I will get to book whale watching after all! Hugs!

There are many more interesting sights worth watching, like excellent cannery museum, nature trail, local master carvers in town, who will share their art and history, but I know you concentrate on excursions. Please go back and enjoy many free treasures in my favorite port.

Absolutely, this is just a port review so people can determine what's at the port. We'll definitely do more reviews of the places you can go should you not like the ports however given Covid its not easy to get on ships :). Happy and safe travels Eva. 🦩

For whale 🐋 watching, should I reserve in advance (w. Royal Caribbean), or will I have the ability to reserve a whale watching trip in Port? Lower price, or same, as privately owned?

You’ll generally find lower prices at the port and you can usually find an excursion provider. Some of the risks are that they are sold out when you arrive however you can book in advance online too and that with excursions from the cruise provider, if something happens they will either keep the ship waiting for you or worse case pay to catch up at the next port where a local one won’t. That said it’s rare it happens but it can so it’s really up to your budget and risk tolerance but yes you can find them at the port or online and book that way. Hope that helps!

@@TravelingFlamingo Excellent perspective. Is the risk of excursions getting passengers back late a real threat, or just theoretical? Do they get departure times confused?

My upcoming cruise just canceled Skagway for Icy Strait Point and I’m furious as I still don’t see the appeal of this place that looks like nothing more than a manufactured tourist destination. I checked Yelp reviews and the majority refer to it as a waste of time. My cruise is in 3 weeks now and I’m dreading it… first and last cruise ever….☹️😡

One nice thing about Icy Strait (to stick to the positives of the unfortunate change), you're very close to the main city there and although the main port area is pretty manufactured you're also supporting the local economy there as most of the people in the city work at the cruise port which is nice. That said, it is a much smaller port but there are some nice things to do, I"m sure either way you will have fun but yes, that's a major change from the cruise provider and not very cool to do a bait and switch :( Either way, I'm sure it will work out, Happy Travels LaurenML! 🦩

@@TravelingFlamingo thanks for the positive reinforcement… and I get it in terms of local economy, but I paid a lot for this cruise and selected it primarily because of Skagway… doing a little research I found the cruise lines were aware of the closure for Skagway due to unsafe rockslides BEFORE I booked my cruise and excursion!!! So talk about a bait and switch….😡😡😡
