Alan Watts is one of those rare individuals that was able to grasp the essence of the Gita and explain it lucidly. His interpretation is very close to my own (based on my reflections) which I am sharing below. Another poetic expression of The Gita I feel is the poem 'If' by Rudyard Kipling. MY INTERPRETATION: Both "peace" and "violence" are inevitable and inseparable facets of existence. Everyone and everything's existence is both creative and destructive from moment to moment - be it the smallest sub-atomic particles or the largest structures in the cosmos (morphing from one particle to another is a violent process that is both simultaneously creative and destructive, and in deep space, stars and black holes are gobbling material from other stars and black holes -- so there's violence at all levels of existence, helping to create, destroy, regulate as necessary). Creation involves destruction, and in destruction there is also creation taking place. What we deem as a "normal" or "good" existence is also immensely violent toward other humans, species, ecosystems, be they living or non-living. Our desire for resources - food/water, energy, manufacturing, drilling, mining, consumerism, diamonds/jewelry/fashion etc. drives conflicts between people, causes genocides elsewhere, destroys ecosystems, wastes resources and wipes out other species. Even a hermit's survival and sustenance is underpinned by violence, as he/she relies on certain basic infrastructure designed by nature or by nature's agents, wrought on by violence in either case. But this is all OK. No matter what we do, this equilibrium would hold. Action or Inaction will lead to the same overall equilibrium. If we live like a hermit/renunciate, then we will be accused of indifference; of not using our faculties to help ourselves and others, accused of not protecting them from violence and the hardships of life. If we do interfere in the world's affairs, then we will be accused of bias and not understanding context, and causing a chain reaction of violence. Either way, there would be violence. Which is why in the Gita, Arjuna is made aware of his delusion that if he abstains from war there will be no violence, which is a fallacy, as there's always violence at every level of existence, because of your action or inaction. Krishna was not expressly opposed to Arjuna not fighting, rather he wanted Arjuna to confront his rationale and re-think his decision in light of these insights. You can think of the divine/nature/consciousness/God (whatever label you wish to apply) as the number Zero - manifested as infinity (as positive & negative numbers - so-called "good" and "bad") & thereby remaining in equilibrium (moksha). This is consistent with Einstein's E = M equation. 0 is both NOTHING and EVERYTHING (infinity) simultaneously. The divine is both the hunter and the hunted. It is both the victor and the vanquished. Triumph & Disaster - the two impostors (lila). By manifesting as everything including their opposites - experiencing reality through myriad forms and from every perspective/vantage point (lila), the divine remains in a non-judgmental equilibrium state, unperturbed, like the 0. However, for it to be in equilibrium, it MUST manifest as everything, including the not-so-pleasant states of existence. You cannot have roses and not have thorns. Our individual selves (the numbers) are the expressions of our macro-self (the Zero). Each number possesses certain unique characteristics and therefore is judgmental of the other numbers, comprehending only a small subset of the whole. As a consequence, it is compelled to manifest (re-incarnate) as the other numbers that it judged. If we fail to put ourselves in someone else's shoes then nature will make us wear those shoes at some point in our evolution (even if it takes another life). At the same time it is okay to judge and trust that nature will do its job. With everything that's going in the world every second, it is impossible to wear all the different shoes simultaneously (am I to feel happy that a family is celebrating the birth of a child or feel sad that another family is mourning the death of a loved one?). Trying to forcibly be non-judgmental prevents us from living spontaneously and in the present. Our macro-self (the Zero) is already in a non-judgmental equilibrium state which it experiences by manifesting as us and our opposites. When a state of existence reaches a certain extreme tipping point, there is no option but to veer to the other extreme. The further back you pull the bowstring, the farther the arrow lands. Extreme violence will drive someone to seek extreme peace (just as extreme greed will drive someone toward extreme fear). Extreme peace will lead to circumstances that will invariably drive someone (in this life or the next) to indulge in extreme violence. Our universe/region of space-time (part of the eternal multiverse) is itself born from a seeming state of extreme peace leading to a burst of activity (violence) that was bubbling underneath. My interpretation of Sanatana philosophy is that there is no permanent escape into some oblivious state from which no re-emergence is possible. If that were true, our present epoch/universe would not exist. That is, the 0 is not a true void/nothing, it is always manifested as infinity, i.e., there is always incarnation. The underlying homogeneous consciousness/energy field manifested as the heterogeneous/diverse cosmos that is observed. Everyone and everything is enlightened along all points in time, from moment to moment. There is no enlightenment to chase in some future state. From the 0's vantage point, there is no passage of time, because there is no change, and time = change or the perception of change. The above explanation makes Sanatana philosophy both monotheistic and polytheistic. Both sides of the equation (E = M) are valid - one is not lesser than the other as is commonly believed.

Gandhi was and is not a mahatma. He totally misinterpreted the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita. .Shri Bhagavan Krishna did not preach Ahimsa on a battlefield of all places. He said do your duty selflessly and so on. Shri Krishna is not "mythological character". Shrimad Ramayanam and Shrimad Mahabharata are histories. Thank you Alan Watts sir for his wonderful explanations. 🙏🕉🙏

I agree it's historical fact & i agree it explicitly allows for righteous violence, but Gandhi was definitely a Bhakti Yogi, which is the heart of the Bhagavad Gita!!! Unlike Krishna's ultimate & final teaching, The Udhhava Gita, which centers around Jnani Yoga. As far as his title as "mahatma", it generally means great soul. I do believe liberating India from British rule absolutely qualifies him as such! ✌️🌎❤️

If you may or may not have actually existed but we don’t really know because it was 2000+ fucking years ago then you might as well be a mythological figure. You could have historically existed and none of the stories about you are actually true. Who knows because that shit was so damn long ago. But none of that matters if the message is good enough. But taking offense to it is just comical especially when the person offending you has been dead for 50 years as well

That's true, but Arjuna's duty was to fight in the war, he was in that situation. Gandhi's duty was to end the cycle of revenge and hate, which was only possible through non-violence. Why do people in the middle east have so much hate? Why does Japan doesn't have much resentments about USA bombing with nuclear weapons and ending the war. It comes with acceptance. Gandhi had a higher vision which he did his utmost duty to fulfill with conviction. And he has fulfilled it. The only country that got independence through non-violence, seems like not many people can comprehend it.

The logic is similar to a doctor who trained to do a specific job and is a specialist in his/her field but when given the task of operating on their own family begins to feel squeamish and confused, and their refusal to act under the given circumstances based on their flimsy rationale is the object of criticism. In the movie 'Apocalypse Now' there's a scene where Marlon Brando's character says something along the lines of "...one must act without judgment, for it is judgment that defeats us". Many agree with but misinterpret the sentiment "you only have a right to action but not the fruits thereof". While it is true that the outcome is never guaranteed, what it really means is that 'happiness' or 'unhappiness' (whatever these labels mean) or the feeling that a particular outcome evokes is not in your hands ultimately. You cannot force yourself to feel one way or another (happy or unhappy) about something. All you can do is view the dataset from multiple perspectives and allow the chips to fall where they may, and in the end the residual or resultant feeling is what it is - you have no control over that. Even so, that feeling is fleeting - you will feel various emotions over the course of time about that issue.

Very interesting insight into the concept of rebirth in Sanatana Dharma, I thought it meant an individual being reborn again in a new body and with no memory of the past lives, but still as that same individual. Now thanks to Watts I know it actually means going back to the "nothingness" of Brahman and then being born again as "new life" from that state. So, actually it's not the individual who's reborn.

"Brahman" is like the number 0 manifesting itself as infinite numbers (as positive & negative - so called "good" and "evil", as things and their opposites - matter, anti-matter etc.), and remaining in a non-judgmental equilibrium state. Like Einstein's equation E = M (divine energy manifesting as all that is - "Yahweh" in Aramaic/Hebrew means "I am" or "I am that which is", and in Sanskrit, "Tat Tvam Asi" means "Thou Art That"). Baruch Spinoza's interpretation of Judaism is similar to Sanatana philosophy. An underlying homogeneous consciousness/energy field manifested as the heterogeneous/diverse cosmos that is observed. making it simultaneously monotheistic and polytheistic. Zero is both NOTHING & EVERYTHING simultaneously, as it encompasses infinity. It's not an absolute/true void or nothingness. By manifesting as infinity it ceases to be a true void and hence acquires the dual properties mentioned in the talk (manifest (as numbers), unmanifest (as zero) etc.). Like in the poem IF by Rudyard Kipling, the divine transcends the notions of good, evil, pleasure, pain, triumph, disaster, by manifesting as all outcomes and experiencing all of these - experiencing the full gamut of expressions associated with existence. It is both the hunter and the hunted, both the victor and the vanquished, and therefore is able to remain unperturbed, in a non-judgmental state. Both sides of the equation (E = M) are equally valid - one is not lesser than the other and not to be escaped, i.e. everyone and everything is enlightened along all points in time. There is no enlightenment to chase in some future state and there's no permanent escape into some oblivious nothingness (there's always re-emergence). The grass always appears to be greener on the other side. Existing in the Relative, we think of returning to the Absolute, while the Absolute continuously manifests as the Relative. Carl Sagan said "we are a way for the cosmos to know itself".

Basically Sri Krishna is giving the divine advice of doing his/ her duty , whatever it may be. A king has to do his duty, a charioteer his duty and a rishi his duty to the fullest, towards the society and to the world. A warrior’s bounden duty is to protect his country men from enemies. If he shirks from his duties he is not fit to be a warrior. The same applies to all the fields. Also karma plays a very vital role in the Hindu faith. We are all bound by our past life karma, which fructifies in the present life and so Sri Krishna says anyways he can see that he is bound to die now because of his past life karma. His karmic cycle for this lifetime has ended. A new cycle has to start.

Unmotivated by fear is a motivation. When letting it flow, wu wei, so to speak, is there no motivation but for the lifeforce to carry on or not ? Though, how about the motivation of gained resources for the victor of violence. Was the krishna actually spouting hierarchical principles to cover his own bases as the writer does when allowing for relinquishment of subjective authority over violence's motivation. There is a sense of reasoning that the krishna follows, which reminds me of microbiological battles going on in the body, which primarily follow survival patterns. We, as conscious beings, are able to judge the ramifications of violent acts, in our modern age, to be without sane merit nor psychologically evolved. So why waste the time, money-tranfer, and blood ? Ancient scripture throughout the world contains deep wisdom for us as a species to discern ways of surviving without killing one another ritualistically by club, arrow, sword, cannon, bullet, missile, virus, starvation, accentuated climate degradation, deregulated ai, and or one of the many many deranged psychopathic politician's fingers on the many Nuclear-Buttons ! Let's get real, United Nations ! Puppets and Puppeteers is old business, step up, and take the reigns while there is time...

In other words, when you act there's no hesitation and you don't act only for the fruit of the actions. You know how to be first, than act intensly. You are looking at Krishna who is in form of his original energy. You have to look at Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and see how he was involved in his life while having his attachments directed to krishna. Music and dance to please him. To Christians everything that isn’t the Bible is automatically satanic because you’re close minded, dogmatic, ignorant and above all without compassion. It is possible to accept Jesus while also seeing the value in other aspects of God’s creation.
