Alan Watts & Films on High | Why Do We Fly?

A film by 'Films on High' featuring Alan Watts from his original seminar "Do You Do It, or Does It Do You?" Alan Watts believed that the more you try to rule things by force, the more you will stir up violence against yourself. Thus, you can never hold on to your power and your possessions; it will always flow away from you. When tension ceases, you discover immediately that the separate ego has disappeared, and that what “I” refers to is simply the total panorama of experience: everything that’s happening. That’s “I.”

“Perhaps the foremost interpreter of Eastern disciplines for the contemporary West, Alan Watts had the rare gift of ‘writing beautifully the un-writable’. Watts begins with scholarship and intellect and proceeds with art and eloquence to the frontiers of the spirit. A fascinating entry into the deepest ways of knowing.” - Los Angeles Times

“If you say making money is the most important thing, you will spend your life completely wasting your time. You’ll be doing things you don’t like doing in order to go on living. That is, to go on doing things you don’t like doing. Which is stupid. Better to have a short life, which is full of what you like doing, than a long one spent in a miserable way.” - Alan Watts

Having a home, debt free in a place where the heart can be at peace and in harmony with the mind required navigation in earlier life. A balance of work and play as with the balance of doing and being. Why we are born into this type of system is the question. Never resolved until now x

Watch the scene from 1:11 to 1:14 again and ask yourself: what are you doing right now? Also: the footage makes the impression everybody should go paraglyding, or mountaineering, or do something that is considered a great achievement by westerners. You might just imagine footage of people drawing, or just sitting there thinking, or reading, or caring for their illnesses. If they dont think about that anymore, if they are merely doing it, they are in the same state as suggested in Watts talk.

i was fortunate enough to have experienced so much, so early, i never admired those i watched chasing money, enough is never enough. Toys aren't the answer either, although they help, lol. Rejecting materialism and career isn't popular in the US. Glad I love nature and the woods. I worked for money not lived for work. My free time is very valuable, that's what i'm trying to achieve the most of.

Summary:- Alan said here that you should ask yourself what work you would like to do if money did not matter. He says - ''You do that, and forget the money.'' It is better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing, than a long life spent in a miserable way. If you like what you are doing, you can become a master of it. It is stupid to spend your life doing things you don't like doing.

... The main thing any halfway intelligent person wants to do, is to not have to report to work everyday. And stomp their alarm clock into pieces.... flying and hang gliding and such, are just a temporary over the top antidote to the over-the-top pain of being highly commodified. And buying expensive flying equipment only feeds the commodification system. A better cure would be to quit your job and become a voluntary peasant.

Its lame because that is the type of music that is free and not subject to monetization by others. So as well meaning as the video creator is, and I did enjoy the video, their pursuit of money has distorted the art of this video and by extension its message. The medium is the message, if you chose to look at the message that way.
