Lily isn't a little girl at all. Lily is you/us/everyone. When I first heard these lyrics I almost cried because the story isn't about a little girl at all it's about people growing up sheltered and protected from the evil in this world. The people that will destroy your dreams, people that will take advantage of you, and people that will manipulate and abuse you. This "girl" is a representation of us all growing up and wanting to explore and see the world only to try new things and then we get enticed with our relationships and drugs and just anything we all know we shouldn't be doing because we "let them in". This song is so beautifully written because it sounds like a lullaby which is how things always start. So beautiful. Until it all goes horribly wrong somehow and we've somehow let some sort of demon in our lives which slowly starts to take over.

This feels like the story is conveying something dark that lurks within the person, a mental battle, such as depression, borderline personality disorder, schizophrenia, or any other related psychological conditions that the protagonist goes through. At some point, she seeks help from people around her, to no avail. The inner darkness follows and haunts her, telling her lies of being the comfort zone, a safe space for her, where she can hide her struggles and scars, but smiling outside. Perhaps she is scared of people judging her, or that there is no one who would just sit and listen to her. As she tried running away from it, no one came to her rescue so eventually she surrendered to the darkness. This is deep. This is my favourite of all time.
