Chorus:
And he bowed his head to Jesus
And he stood for Uncle Sam
And he only loved one woman
He was always proud of what he had
He said his greatest contribution
Is the ones you leave behind
Raised on the ways and gentle kindness
Of a small town Southern man

This song was dedicated to my grandfather by the priest in their small southern town.. It was played at his funeral in front of 400 people. Family man, rancher, honorary director for Texas cattle raising association, county commissioner, county judge, man of the year in agriculture, POW korea, but most importantly, my grandfather. This song warms my heart and make me smile so big every time I hear it. Almost like it was written for him.

Ill tell you exactly where it went: hard work, Christian virtue, and honor are not held as ideals for so many, so there goes the music that stood for it. Good news is that you can still find this type of music, you just have to dig in the woods a little to find the people who sing it. Proud to hear our music is appreciated in France! - A Southern Man

This is my favorite Alan Jackson song. It's so reflective of how many of us grew up and where taught by our parents, grandparents and other family. To be hardworking, honest, humble, and love your family, love your wife or husband. To put yourself second behind them. Support our country, respect and help others. To put your faith in God.

In the heart of country music land, A voice rings out so clear and grand. With his cowboy hat and guitar in hand, Alan Jackson's the name of this southern man. His twangy voice, so smooth and warm, Sings of love, heartbreak, and life's many storms. He paints pictures of small-town charm, With tales of whiskey, women, and farms. From "Chattahoochee" to "Remember When", His songs take us back to where we've been. He's sung of angels and the devil's sin, And captured the spirit of Americana within. With over twenty albums to his name, Alan Jackson's legacy will always remain. A true legend of country music's game, A shining star in its hall of fame.

From Ga here, Fuckin' Luke bryan has made country turn into Pop. All the dumbasses can't even see that it's just pop music. There's no story, it's all sex appeal. When I hear music, I want to feel the music and the story. It's all about the emotion that is instilled from a song. I'm not a big fan of country, but this is the real shit. A man telling a story and instilling emotion among his listeners.

Too bad he's Italian and doesn't understand the words, but the expressions and the images tell everything well. They talk about love and that of the 50s still with healthy behaviors and feelings. A whole life spent working to support his family, his children and in the certainty of faith. I can only say after reading the Italian translation that it's a wonderful song by Alan, sung in a sublime voice! Great music in the States! . Grande musica negli States!

First heard this song while airborne on a trip to Dubai in 2019. Couldn't just stop as it resonated with my reality. I appreciate my beloved dad and mum for their sacrifice and commitment to raising us their children. I pray for more long life fothem both. Of course, I listened to the song on my return journey to Nigeria 🇳🇬!

So wonderful that you, as Nigerian, can hear the love in the voice of an American man for his father. Our cultures should not be far apart. Alan could not sleep after the attack on the World Trade Center. Pop music wanted him to change a lot of his song "Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning?" Make it more pop instead of country so that pop agencies could make more money off it. He didn't care about the money. He would not back down and he would not change the song. That is courage.

I heard this for the first time today at a funeral . The words fit the deceased perfectly, and I hold them dearly in my heart. I’m from Pennsylvania, but I was raised in Florida. One of my best friends ever was blessed by small town Southern men: daddy, uncle, brother. My husband is a big city Southern man. A good man. There’s a difference. I’m jealous, but I’ve benefited from her wisdom framed by the small town Southern men in her life. Thank you for this song. It sure was fitting for Mr. Merrill Griffis, and it will make me smile everyday.

Canadian here. I consider this song as "small town northern man" My farmer/rancher grandfather grew up in a small town, met my grandma a small town over. Christian man, Built his own house, started his own businesses, had 4 daughters, then a son. Worked his ass off for all of it and instilled that to his kids and down on. This song is eerily similar to his life, aside from Southern and the uncle Sam line. This song is him, always gives me good memories.

Born the middle son Of a farmer And a small town Southern man Like his daddy's Daddy before him Brought up Workin' on the land Fell in love With a small town woman And they married up And settled down Natural way of life If you're lucky For a small town Southern man First there came Four pretty daughters For this small town Southern man Then a few years Later came another A boy, he wasn't planned Seven people Living all together In a house built With his own hands Little words with love And understanding From a small town Southern man And he bowed His head to Jesus And he stood For Uncle Sam And he only loved One woman He was always proud Of what he had He said His greatest contribution Is the ones You leave behind Raised on the ways And gentle kindness Of a small town Southern man Raised on the ways And gentle kindness Of a small town Southern man Callous hands Told the story For this small town Southern man He gave it all To keep it all together And keep his family On his land Like his daddy Years wore out his body Made it hard Just to walk And stand You can break the back But you can't break The spirit Of a small town Southern man And he bowed His head to Jesus And he stood For Uncle Sam And he only loved One woman He was always proud Of what he had He said His greatest contribution Is the ones You leave behind Raised on the ways And gentle kindness Of a small town Southern man Raised on the ways And gentle kindness Of a small town Southern man Finally death Came callin' For this small town Southern man He said it's alright 'Cause I see angels And they got me By the hand Don't you cry And don't you worry I'm blessed And I know I am 'Cause God Has a place in heaven For a small town Southern man And he bowed His head to Jesus And he stood For Uncle Sam And he only loved One woman He was always proud Of what he had He said His greatest contribution Is the ones You leave behind Raised on the ways And gentle kindness Of a small town Southern man Raised on the ways And gentle kindness Of a small town Southern man Source: LyricFind
