This is actually incredible writing. It takes some level of genius to think of something as tragic as the 'invisible dad' story. I love that they explored the Dave Clifton character more also.
This is my favorite Alan Partridge clip because for all his many faults, it shows that Alan has his good qualities - such as showing compassion for even his bitterest of rivals in Dave Clifton. And yet during the tender moment of his hug with Dave, Alan still maintains his radio professionalism by announcing the time to his audience.

Yeah, he's a bit eccentric, and more than a little bitter. But Alan's not altogether a bad guy.

@@davidb6681 I remember enjoying Phil Cornwell when he did impressions of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Jack Nicholson on Radio 1's Steve Wright in the Afternoon, then the likes of Stella Street and the Glam Metal Detectives. When you get someone of his calibre alongside Coogan it can only mean lovely stuff is on the way.

@@mikewilson714 Stella Street was awesome and the first time I’d seen Phil Cornwall. Star Stories was along the same lines and more recent, starred Kevin Bishop who I thought deserved more recognition for his talent. A bit like Phil Cornwall👍
"Dave...what was the worst thing you did? God help us." Proceeds to declining to hear about the worst thing Dave did. 🤣
It's a shame they can never go back to their old dynamic now, since their rivalry was so funny, but this scene is so good, it's almost worth it. The moment near the end of Dave's monologue when he finally drops his awful 'radio voice' is so touching, and adds an extra bit of tragedy. He really never switched off his on-air persona around anyone until now.
God I actually had tears welling up in my eyes when Partridge got emotional... That was unexpectedly sweet and moving... and wonderfully daft.
Dave Clifton is a true hero, he inspired me to put down the premium larger and start reaching for the apples. what a legend

The warmth and nuance in the writing here is impeccable, this is the sort of closure we needed for the more 'throwaway' characters of the earlier series and it's awesome to see this kind of dedication to the maturity of Alan and everyone in his universe.

I was really expecting Simon to chime in and say “you weren’t making cider with those apples” or something.
I'm a lame American and while I have heard of Alan Partridge I had never actually seen it before and holy shit for whatever reason his incredulity about the guy changing his name from Tom Barrington to Dave Clifton and the accompanying facial expressions has me laughing my ass off as I watch that bit over and over again.
