What I love about living in Alameda is how little it has really changed. From watching this video I can still see the same buildings that were here over a hundred years ago. The city is much slower pace than the rest of the Bay Area.

I loved this video!!! We moved here in the early 60's. It was wonderful to see the beginning of Alameda and so many beautiful memories. We still live in the beautiful Victorian on Sherman Street my parents bought. Thank you, so much for doing this!

how great is this, and its like everyone in the comments couldve been my neighbor. i remember this video from when i was in the 5th grade or so and it shows the alameda i remember.. town is changing quite a bit especially recently. i miss the old alameda i grew up in, and i wish i had more time to enjoy it as an adult but so goes life, huh.

I grew up in East Oakland in the Fruitvale area on E7th st my house was like 3 blocks from the Fruitvale bridge. I have many memories hanging out in Alameda like the Alpha Beta and Payless drugs on Blanding and South Shore mall and the old Penny market at the Drive in near Webster and of course hanging out at the Alameda beach. I remember as a kid the Alameda theater was a roller skating spot.

I used to live on Stanton, loved that area too.

I was at the Naval Air Station in 93/94! Great memories! Take the bus to Oakland then catch the B.A.R.T. to S.F. or Berkeley! Wish I could go back!

My mother use to love Roller Derby, and I remember in the 70’s Buddy Atkinson use to have a Roller Derby practice skating rink off Webster street

👍My Mom used to skate in that Roller Derby in the 60s.

I lived in Alameada for about ten years and LOVED and marveled at some of the homes on Central Ave

My grandma Margurite lived on the west end. I can remember sitting at her house listening to the jets start up. Remember when the plane crashed in the middle of the Island?

​@@fscotthumphrey yes, about 1973. It crashed into the top of an apartment building on Central (or Santa Clara?) Ave. Between Union & Lafayette. I heard all about it as we moved to Alameda just after it happened.

@@sharonm.t.2492 Re the crash, it was determined that the plane crashed (A-7 Corsair) because the pilot was smoking in his plane while on 100% oxygen (which caused a flash fire in his jet). Bay Farm island had nothing on it, complete open space. The newspaper was called the Alameda Times Star. We kids rode out bikes every place on that island (no where near the amount of cars then). South Shore, Washington Park, Krusi Park. Our entire class (at John Muir school) stood and watch John F. Kennedy drive by on Atlantic Ave. in 1962 (AirForce One landed at NAS Alameda) on his way to give a speech at the U.C. Berkeley campus. Glad to see you remember Tempo music, it where we bought our first Beatles albums back in 1964. Fun days that are gone forever.

​@@GeeBee909 oh now you mention jfk i think they got laura bush for us in middle school to give a short speech and they set up the sniper curtains and everything, big deal. i wonder if that happens a lot because of alameda's military history, or if everyone gets to see presidents and related at some point

the history is a bit askew. just a little bit. I'm surprised he didn't talk about the great fire of 1920s or the 1973 Crash of a Corsair Jet that many people heard or saw as it flipped upside down and rolled over a house rooftop and into an apartment complex. as an old guy now I can't remember why I walked into a room half the time but I;ll always remember the sound of that Jet 5 blocks away from our home. everyone said the same thing. Sounded like 10 cars all hitting each other and cartwheeling down the street with the sound of metal. sorry for the grim visual but it's a fascinating city and it would be nice to keep it clean and safe from people wanting to shoot up Park street or graffiti. also they didn't talk about the "Dwarf houses on the east side of the city. half scale Victorian like houses with small doors for the entertainers at Neptune Beach that had lived in. the houses were purchased and modified into normal size door fronts. it sucks because you can't take people for a ride through history and show them it. now its just a "Use your imagination, it was there once". LOLS

I enjoy seeing all of this having visited Alameda often growing up in the bay area. It is a beautiful little place . At 29 ft elevation its days are numbered unfortunately. I now live at 2285 elevation.

My grandparents settled in Alameda after the Oklahoma Dusbowl in the early 1900's. My grandfather was a shipbuilder welder in the estuary. My father was born in Alameda Hospital and graduated Alameda High School. Later on, my grandfather also graduated AHS by going to night school. I was also born in Alameda Hospital and graduated AHS in 1984. Go Hornets! ...I also went to one of the last double features at the Alameda Theater around 1982 before it was (temporarily) closed down. Very grateful for these memories and connections.

Music sounds like the theme from a '70s sitcom.

2017-2018, I volunteered at Alameda Historical museum during high school and George Gunn, he was probably in he's 70s very nice man who take pride in his findings

In 1999 I spent 10 days staying with a friend who lived on Central Street. I think as I remember Anyway its a beauty full town. I'm New Englander . From Salem Mass then The Victorian homes made me feel right at home. Loved my time there.

i graduated ahs 09, i went back last summer and ill tell ya lots of things have changed. i thought id see a lot of things that i found were already closed or replaced with other business. you should visit once in a while and keep up things are never gona be the same again. i know i wish i had visited sooner

My mom grew up on the alameda navy base, she said for the most part, it still looked the same, my nephew plays baseball at one of the hangers on the base, my mom said it’s dead on the same, even smelt the same in there lol

Yes I lived right nearby the Spite House at Broadway & Christ (on Broadway & Encinal.) Lived in Alameda '74-08. With some short times leaving during the 90s & 00s. Mom & family still lives in town :)
