This is why the NCAA Tournament is so much fun to watch, you have all of these small schools competing for a chance at a national championship. When you see one of those small schools take down a Duke or Kentucky, it’s a fun thing to watch. College football needs to expand the playoff and give those Group of 5 schools a chance to compete. Too many times has a Boise State, UCF, Western Michigan, and so many more go undefeated but all they get is a BCS Bowl game or New Years Six Bowl. There is never a chance for the underdog to prove themselves and compete for a title. The playoffs should not be reserved for big name schools, it needs to be expanded.

Alabama isn’t doing anything tbh. The problem is with the College Football Ranking system and CFP committee. The problem is that College football is no longer about competition or skill, but rather scheduling and perceived strength of a conference. Because of how we rank success in college football scores no longer matter. Wins no longer matter. Stats no longer matter. What matters is what your schedule is, and how people are feeling that given year. These rankings have zero consistency and zero analytical science.

Brian uhh they seem to do a good job of getting the top 4 teams in. The only problem is there are usually about 6 teams that could play in a competitive playoff every year but only four slots. 8 team playoff solves all of that. But people will still be upset when bama wins that too 😂

Too much credit/ blame going to Bama. What about the responsibility on other big programs to step up? Michigan's been irrelevant for years, Notre Dame regularly fails to live up to hype, USC has been down, Texas has been down, OU is inconsistent, Florida has been down- It's not Bama's fault that many big name programs have fallen off. That's the real reason for lack of parity.

The problem with College Football is the disparity of schedules. Look at Bama's schedule. It is an absolute joke. The SEC kisses Bama's ass and the crossover games from SEC West to SEC East favors Bama in every respect. Bama gets Tennessee as their Permanent rival and LSU gets Florida. So LSU and UF play every year and one of them will pick up an SEC loss early in the season which favors Bama either way. LSU and Auburn play early in the season so one of them will have a loss and Bama plays LSU and Auburn late in the season so it benefits Bama to play weaker teams and play their major rivals late in the season every year. Everybody else in the SEC is beating the crap out of each other while Bama sits on their ass playing Vandy, Mizzou, Arkansas, Tennessee, and out of conference games like UL Lafayette. Then even if Bama loses a game and doesn't even win the SEC West and don't even play for the SEC Championship they somehow magically get to play for the National Title. This has happened TWICE to Bama but NO OTHER SCHOOL IN THE COUNTRY HAS PLAYED FOR THE NC WITHOUT AT LEAST WINNING THEIR DAMN DIVISION. It's not good for college football and is a fucking joke.

Robert McCoin yet the CFP was created in order to prevent what happened in 2011 with the Epic BCS failure with Bama and LSU. Bama didn’t win their conference or division that year. Then it happened again under the current system that was prevented to stop having non conference champs from playing or getting in when they get beat by the conference champ. They also messed up with OSU the year before.

As long as Nick Saban is coaching Alabama they will be a contender for the championship literally every year. That guy is just a magician.

The real problem is so many kids want to go pro they know if they go to a small school it’s a slim chance of them going the other schools need 5 star 4 star talent they need to find away to spread the talent out

They need to expand the playoffs sooner rather than later. To act like Ohio State, USC or UCF couldn't have made any noise is complete stupidity. Hell UCF proved they belonged by taking Auburn to the woodshed and Ohio State shut down one of the best offenses in USC. Even from a financial standpoint it makes all the more sense to expand so that you avoid the ratings bomb that was last year's championship game. Last year was the lowest rates championship in the past decade because let's face it. You had two southern teams which meant the Midwest and East Coast markets weren't tuned in and they're the two biggest markets respectively. I don't understand why they're so afraid of expanding the playoffs, especially Saban. I don't get how you claim to have the best team yet you're the biggest opponent to expanding the playoffs.

osu5inarow People don’t want to watch bad football, even in a 4 team playoff there have been blowouts, normally there is around 4-5 teams every year that are just way better than everyone else, and would blow out the 6-8 seeded teams, I would only support a 6 team playoff at the most, with the 1 and 2 seed getting a bye

@Jason Gyebi That is such a terrible way to determine strength of conference. 1. You assume everyone is going to try to get into the NFL. 2. There is more to getting drafted than just playing on a good team, as you are being compared by position. 3. Larger programs inherently have a better chance regardless of their actual skill due to how much hype they can raise for games, media contracts etc. 4. Ranking conferences in this way means that we are ranking teams based on last year's success, rather than the skill and statistical ability of teams in the present for present rankings.

Except all but Miss St and Arkansas play big OOC games every single year. Alabama scheduled Louisville when they were coming off an 11 win season, and has played Va Tech, Southern Cal, Michigan, Florida St, Clemson OOC. UGA has played Notre Dame, Clemson, etc. Auburn opened up with Washington, last two years played Clemson. LSU played Wisconsin, Oregon, etc. Florida plays FSU every year, opened with Michigan last year. South Carolina plays Clemson every year. Don't let facts get in the way of a nice whine tho. (Also Bama has a home and home on the books with Texas)

Real Basketball Personnel know that the most talented teams don't win it all. A Zero All Star Detroit Piston team beat the 4 Laker Superteam in 2004. Teams playing for the National Championship should not have The Citadel, William & Mary, South Alabama on their non-conference schedule. Ohio St in Tuscaloosa or Bama at the Big House would have made for a great Kickoff Opening Weekend. Oh well.

I think one problem is Bama basically having a get out of jail free card just like last year, they didnt do enough to win their division but get to jump into the playoffs.

Coming from a disappointed LSU fan.. Georgia should be the huge favorite. Everyone saying this is a really good LSU team is wrong. The offense is stagnant. They don’t have a dominant running back like usual, they have nick brosette.. good but not what they are use to.. Burrow isn’t as good as LSU fans give him credit for.. he’s a decent game manager. The only real advantage LSU has is being the under dog because that’s when they thrive. When they play competition they should win.. like Florida.. that’s when they choke. Georgia should still roll over LSU.

The problem is that the SEC is ordained. The problem is the conference championship is completely stupid. Bowl games are about money. To fix this problem is to expand to 8 teams that actually win their conference championship and 2 at large bids and let the committee chose those. Seat the team according to the rankings and leave IT alone

Disney/ESPN signed a massive SEC contract and then started claiming that the SEC is the only conference that mattered. I suppose the amateurs at Disney thought people will switch conference allegiance based on hype. Instead they just soured on college football's relevancy. Well, it became a self fulfilling prophecy, they handed the SEC a massive recruiting advantage and have wrecked college football for a generation.

Bama should not have played for the National Title in 2011 or last year. They backed in both years. Last year they were no better than 3rd in the SEC, failed to play in the SEC Title Game, Auburn beat the crap out of them, and they did not even play UCF, who was undefeated and defeated Auburn. UCF was the true National Champion. I by the was am neither a fan of Bama or UCF. Any objective college football fan will agree with me.

Here in Tuscaloosa the home games are called "seal-clubbings." You can't even give unused tickets away for free.

Alabama doesn't play anyone until late in their season. I bet if you gave any team with some talent 10 games to prepare for a couple hard games, any team would look good.

When the best players decide they no longer want to go to Alabama the dominance will stop. Until then, find a way to beat Alabama or stop crying.

Brian The truth of the matter is the chances of a smaller school beating them is very slim. But to say it’s impossible is a statement only made by someone who doesn’t understand football or competitive sports in general. It doesn’t really matter who they schedule or don’t schedule. In the end they make it to the National Championship and win. Their loss to Clemson was literally in the final seconds of the game. To say they didn’t deserve to be or shouldn’t have been in that game is erroneous. They just as well could have won another championship that night. Whoever is on their schedule has to beat them. Upsets happen all the time. But realistically speaking, the best chance for them losing season to season is within their conference. They’re a powerhouse. Their backups could likely start at other major universities. But that doesn’t make them unstoppable. It just means you have little room for error. You have to outplay them. I’ve yet to see a team do that. So, again, stop crying and find a way to win against them.

What does Finebaum have on the upper management of ESPN? The guy is terrible outside of SEC knob polishing.

Course I remember when Ohio State needed to hit a game winning field goal to beat Marshall in 02 then went on to beat possibly the greatest college football team ever in Miami who talent wise made Alabama look like a juco school with the caliber of future pros on that team.

How does Ohio State have a weak schedule. They Beat PSU and TCU ON THE ROAD. Plus we play Other teams such as Michigan state, Michigan, and potentially Wisconsin in the BIG 10 championship game. When you allow teams into the playoff (of 4 teams only specifically) without winning it's conference championship game you ARE sucking the life out of college football. Especially when you give that team, who didn't have to play a hard conference championship game, an extra week of rest late in the season before the playoff. Still too much politics in this mess. Expand the playoff or only allow conference champs (I'd argue both).

I honestly didn’t think alabama should’ve made the playoffs last year over OSU but they stepped up, i can’t say what osu would be able to do because every year is a new one, and every game is a new one

This is why we NEED an 8 team playoff, with automatic bids for the P5 champions. Currently the criteria on getting into the playoffs is simply not losing, which is why Alabama NEVER plays home and home series with non conference opponents. If Ohio State had played a cupcake at home instead of Oklahoma last year, Alabama wouldn't have made the playoff. We need an automatic bid for all the champions to avoid that situation, plus 3 at large based on strength of schedule and record.

I don't have a problem with Alabummer's schedule. It just seems they always find a way to make their way into the playoffs. Fans crying about Ohio State getting in back in 2016 but at least they had some pretty good wins. Yea I think PSU deserved a shot. Bammer didn't win their conference back in 2011 and still got in the Natty. What about Oklahoma State. So what they lost against ISU. Heck even if they went undefeated they probably still would've gotten snubbed. They need to stop making this into a beauty contest. One thing I will say is they tend to find certain SEC teams and squeeze them in the top 25 to make bammers win over them look better. It could be a 6-5 Ole Miss team and they'll rank them 25.

We need 8+ playoff teams, (ideally, I’d prefer 16) Every conference champion gets an automatic bid (yes, including Group of 5) and the remaining spaces are filled by at-large bids. I understand the NCAA is all about money which is why they want to hold on to this bowl format bullshit, but seeing as they make billions off the basketball tournament every year, I have no idea why they wouldn’t expand the playoff with a similar format.

what do you expect? they play an easy schedule every year and then they walk into and out of the playoff without a scratch on them while other teams have stronger schedules. UCF has an easy schedule too and they treat BAMA like its any better when it isn't. If Saban is a good coach how come he couldn't make it in the NFL

The committee took the oxygen out of college by putting Alabama in the championship, even though they had one loss in there conference, and other were undefeated, why have college playoffs, if the committee is going to overrule, give me 8 team play off with conference winners and take the committee out of it. Or make all the top 10 teams play each other at the start of the season and spice it up. I’m sure that one week after that will make it more exciting if not tide will roll until the end of time

I think 8 teams is really too many. I know it probably won’t happen but I would advocate for 5 teams, with 4 and 5 playing each other 2 weeks prior to when the playoffs would usually start and the winner facing the one seed... It’s a way to add another team to the mix so we don’t leave out a deserving team and for teams to fight to be one of the top 3 seeds so they don’t have to play the extra game

Allamericanlibertarian not really because good teams that play a harder schedule get fucked out of a chance to play for the chip every year. People seem to forget that look at Bama and Clemson they have literally played teams that they could beat in their sleep and yet they are number 1 and 2... and let’s face it who wouldn’t love to see the number 32 ranked team with 4 losses beat a undefeated number 1 team

they’ll go undefeated in the reg season, they’ll win there bowl game. BUT.... clemson, ohio st, are legit. there fronts are insane.

Auburn, LSU, They get to beat georgia twice in the post season. There conference schedule is excellent. The non c schedule is trash other then the first game of the season
