Al's YAMAHA DXS12 powered subwoofer video review

Ойын-сауық

A look at the DXS12 powered subwoofer from Yamaha. The DXS powered subwoofers (DXS12 and DXS15 available) were designed to be used with Yamaha's excellent DXR active tops. I have reviewed both the DXR8s and DXR15s and simply loved their sound quality, features and superb processing. I actually purchased a set of DXR8s for myself - which I love. I liked the DXR15s even more, but couldn't afford them after also buying some KV2 KX12s which I really wanted to review as well... I really need to work on this powered speaker obsession I have. :-)

    (continued) Since you have a hi pass filter in the tops and low pass filter in the subs, you simply set both to the same (100hz or 120hz) frequency and you’re good to go. With some manufacturers, the crossover (which is a combination of hi and low pass filters) is built into the sub, so in this case - you NEED to send the signal from your mixer to the sub(s) first so that the hi passed signal is fed to the tops. Not so with the DXR/DXS. Will try to posts a new video when I get my subs. Al

    Sorry I missed your comment... I am hoping to test out the DXS15s shortly. If the DXS12s are any indication, the DXS15 sould be really excellent. (in x-tended LF mode) of course. Al

    Hi there, I don’t currently own the DXS subs, but I do plan on picking up a pair for father’s day. There is however more than one way to connect the DXR tops to the DXS subs. You can either go from your mixer to the subs first and then from the subs to the tops via thru XLRs OR you can go from mixer to tops and tops to subs, again via the thru XLR jacks. You can also have similar configurations using a single DXS sub. (continues...)

    Yamaha DXS12 vs Electro Voice ZXA1 ???

  • @alpoulin1

    DJ-SpecializED Mixes From what I've been told, it takes a pair of ZXA1 subs to match the output of a single DXS12. The ZXA1 sub is much lighter and more compact though - but in the world of subs, cabinet size has a big influence on output and extension. Apparently the ZXA1s are a little more musical than the Yamaha, but output wise, the Yamaha wins easily due to its bigger size...

    DJ-SpecializED Mixes I really like the size and weight of the EVs and a pair of them should be fine for wedding type events up to 150 people or so. Which tops are you using?

    DJ-SpecializED Mixes The QSCs are great tops. You will need a pair of DXS12s OR 2 pairs of ZX1As to properly keep up with those at high levels IMO :-)

    thanks for the video, I am looking at the larger DXS15 to go with my pair of Yamaha C115V tops. Do you have a video and your review with the 15 sub box? Thanks!

    I would recommend the DXS15 if you're planning on purchasing just one sub to go with your 312As. A DXS12 in X-tended LF mode will sound very good with the 312As, but won't be able to keep up with them at higher levels. The DXS15 will keep up better. That or a pair of DXS12s. How do like your 312As? I have four 310As and simply love them!

    I'm all about portability. I have 2 EV ELX15 and they provide awesome sound. I'm looking into a sub but I don't want to go the traditional route of the 15inch sub or 18sub. Do you think this DXS12 can help in adding extra kick/punch.

    +Gabriel Escobar hi gabriel, i have always been an E.V. man , the zxa1 sub is a very small musical easy to lift sub , but it clips out too early and runs out of steam. when i heard the yamaha dxs 12 sub .it was an almighty jump up. it's basically twice as loud as the e.v. ,and yes it's heavier as well, but l it has the sound of many other 15'' subs out there. plus if you put the yamaha dxs in low mode it hits a low as 43 hz. it's a great sub with yamaha's 7 year warranty. just get one there great. hope this helps regards philip (uk)

    +Gabriel Escobar IMO, you would need at least a pair of them to *almost* keep up with the ELX15s. A single one will add some bottom to your overall sound, but it won't be able to keep up at all at higher volumes. A pair of 18s (or 21s) would be the optimal solution. Generally, it is tough to properly add subs to 15" tops. It is much easier to use small tops (8s,10, or 12s) and pair these with subs.

    HI, AL like you know I have the DBR15 and I'm thinking to buy another one. I ask you: If I have 2 DBR15 What is the next step in this set up, another DBR15 or a subwoofer? And which subwoofer do you recommend? Thank you for your help!

  • @alpoulin1

    Jose Torres DJLITO Your pair of DBR15s will handle plenty of occasions stand alone, but when you have something a little bigger, adding a DSR118 active sub to handle the deeper lows is what I would do. If it is too heavy for you, you can always add a QSC KW181 instead. Al

    alpoulin1 The DSR118 is heavy, I was thinking something like the DXS15, For how many people the DSR118 WITH THE dbr15? thank you

  • @alpoulin1

    @alpoulin1

    Jose Torres DJLITO I would say a DSR118 with a pair of DBR15s would be good for roughly 200 people at wedding levels, but this figure can certainly vary depending on room size, acoustics and how many people on the actual dance floor to cover -and expected SPL - which will also vary by age group. My biggest system, which is a pair of DXR8s over a pair of DXS12 subs can handle up to 250 (which is the biggest wedding I've done with the system), but again that's give or take depending on many factors. This same system would be good for maybe 100-150 teenagers, since they like it loud and bassy...

    @@josetorresdjlito4530 the dxs15 are about similar size and weight to the dsr18. I know cuz in had them. I prefer the dsr18 thats why i sold the 15s due to similar size and bandpass.

    Doesn't the LPF area act as the crossover?

  • @alpoulin1

    @alpoulin1

    8 жыл бұрын

    The low pass filter only performs part of a crossover's function, in this case it controls up to which frequency the subwoofer produces sound. While this is helpful for the sub, you also need a high pass filter for the tops to limit how low a frequency they respond to. The idea is to have the tops and subs(s) meet at the same frequency so as to have the subs (for example) handle all frequencies below 100hz, while the tops will only produce frequencies 100hz and up. Having the subs(s) handle the deeper frequencies greatly reduces excursion demands on the woofers in your tops, improving headroom and clarity.
