I think Al was forbidden from parenting his son. The man said that him and Diddy were finally able to be at the same venue for Quincy right before Kim passed. Dude stole the man's woman and kid. I doubt Quincy even knows or understands the depth of the situation that he is unfortunately faced with.
Knowing what an abusive bully Diddy is he most likely used fear tactics to keep Al away. AL probably did not want to further endanger his family. Now Al is speaking up and no longer afraid.
