Grandmaster Varuzhan Akobian shows his game against French Grandmaster Laurent Fressinet from the 2009 National Open. See if you can play like Var in the middlegame.

"When you put your pieces on good squares and play proper chess, good things gonna happen to you." Thank you Mr Akobian
I like the way how Akobian explains how you are just one move away from giving away your advantage. Alot of Masters teach you how you are one move away from loosing. But he is giving me insight into the intricacies of playing precise.
Akobian is great.
quite addicted akobian videos these days! Makes me wait the entire week to relish the next one
I like how he says “how ‘bout that” when he checkmates somebody

I really love the way akobian organizes his lecture...he has sooo much patience to explain each move in detail...d4 happens to be a great positional opening..can you please share more of his lectures
Watching these lectures. I actually feel like I'm in the classroom. Fantastic stuff. Thanks.
I havent yet watched the video... but I bet its gonna be awesome as usual!!!
For anyone confuesed about finding the game(2nd position). Turns out it is the well known game Wilhelm Steinitz vs Curt von Bardeleben (1895) The Battle of Hastings

Excellent game analysis thanks a ton
I love Varuzhan! You are the GM of teachers Sir! This is because you play out each thought on the board, we can see what you see! Thank you so much for these classes!
I was so sad. There was no new game yesterday. Today's good.
En realidad el juego de la segunda parte fue Steinitz vs Von Bardelebeden. In fact the second part was the game Steiniz vs Von Bardelebeden. It was an italian game. with d5, thats why withes got a issolated pawn in d4.
GM. Akobian Great teaching skill allows him to inspire and catch your attention in the games being explained. Thank you GM Akobian!
Thank you Mr. Akobian.
Excellent game.Clear explained.
Never a better lecturer than Var.
Unbelievable! I have been watching your videos and my skills are improved. I am now beating everyone :))
He is really passionate about the game it’s a pleasure to hear him talk about it
In the 2nd part of the lecture, that is no Capablanca-Zubarev game. That´s the famous game between Steinitz and von Bardeleben, played in Hastings 1895. I find it a little bit weird a GM like Akobian make this kind of mistake, to be true... Even an amateur like me, spotted the game after 2/3 moves.

Actually there is a Capablanca-Zubarev game from Moscow 1925, but it is not this one. See www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1100093. When I saw this video I thought there was an amazing similarity to Steinitz-von Bardeleben and was thinking Capablanca must have been thinking of the Steinitz game but it turned out to be a mistake by Akobian or the book that he was looking at during the lecture.
Very informative and well explained!
simple and great lecture ...
as always ...d best ...ur d guru var akobian!!!!!
Your teaching is very good
Amazing thing about Akobian is how fast he spots moves/threats in complex positions that would normally require deep analyses for most chess enthusiasts. I guess thats what makes him a GM.
Very very super class thank u
very good coach I enjoyed his expositions
He's is not human did you see his match at the us championship against Fabiano he was down 2 past and still managed to win👍

this chanil has done alot for chess.thanx
my comment: Both games were excellent, I was pleasantly impressed with Capablanca's against Zubarev in Moscow 1927; where it is masterfully explained by master Akobian, how to obtain an advantage keeping in mind the attack on the isolated pawn, he shows us, as the former world champion - who would lose his title that year-; get rid of it at the precise moment to leave a lesser piece in a dominant position. For after successive movements full of small traps, he will achieve success through a series of direct threats of mate and material gain.
Really nice game. I think I'm starting to get this because the moves you played were the first I shouted at my screen.
Vaz you're great but the second game was the masterpiece of the old Steinitz at Hastings 1895.

+Giuseppe Indelicati yeah, I was confused there too, but Capablanca-Zubarev is also a good one. www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1100093 for the curious.
I am much confuse? 37:37. why the rook check the king without protection?
@darkbo123
3 жыл бұрын
i was also, the king can already take the rook because there was a pawn blocking the queen and the knight doesn't protect the rook then the king only took the rook when the queen moved into H4. Quite puzzled by the move but i kept on thinking that these players are GM how can they miss that one.
U r drug for me, good job sir, i like most when u laugh
As much as I love Akobians lectures, I really miss Yasser and Ben... Any hope they will be back soon?

BULENT KIRCA It is Akobian. Vladimir Akopian is another Armenian GM.
I wish I could listen to GM Akobian say "logical" and "rational" over and over again.
Varuz is one of the most down the earth teachers in St. Louis hands down.
Yea huge fan of this guy. The absolute man.
Yes. I like these lectures even though I've been playing chess on and off for about 50 years! But more than tactics it is judgment that I often get wrong. (Tactics as well of course). These are good videos for young players who want to improve. Regardless they are interesting.
NEW VIDYAS! Nice :D
I really like this style of asking the class for the next move throughout much of the game. Remarkably you don't see it that often, but it's really good exercise for the frontal lobe chess centers....making plans, analyzing positions, calculating moves, problem solving, decision making... If your in a lazy mood, however, you might want to come back later... : )
The second game was Steinitz vs. von Bardeleben from Hastings 1895.
Tnk u !!!
La posición de la segunda partida es Steinitz -Von Bardeleben , no Capablanca - Zubarev
Akobian is my mentor in chess! I watch his instructional videos every morning while I stretch & my rating has gone from 700 rating to currently at 1400 rating in 2 months.
nice game! it seems Akobian always plays d4 with white, is there a game where he plays e4 on this channel?
So, When we have initiative, we should put pressure and using the advantage is depend to our calculation ability, so I need to do more tactics tactics tactics.
This guy is the best
good job Var
At 19:00 why not Nxc5 instead of b3 to avoid bishop attack on knight? After Nxc5, then Rc8, Nd6 forking queen and knight I think? Also, with b3, why not followed by Bxa4, bxa4 doubling the pawns?
In the second game, did Capablanca reached the same position as Steinitz? I remember a similar position from a Steinitz' game.

I can't find the Capablanca game on databases, can anyone help?
Yes great he thinks very logically deep wide and before all that find what his opponent is thinking abd trying to do and evaluate
I always wanted to know what song or beat is that in the intro lol

Var,i think it was Steinitz-Bardenleben, Capablanca was not White!
The game is not Capablanka Zubarev! Steinitz - Bardeleben 1895!
He is great, just got mifted on the statement. Akobian is great.
in 20:57 I thinked a little and sayed +2.00 points for white. So,I put the position on Stockfish 9 and "boom" +2.00 pints for white. And is not the first time what I do that. Akobian is good teacher and excelent professional.

this guy makes me win games at my chess club.
at 19:11 why doesn't black just play BxNa4 and after bxBa4 then Rc8? You bypass showing that variation and one that I probably would have considered as both white and black
After Ng5 check, why can't black just take the N on G5 with his pawn instead of moving the King like he did.... just trying to understand why this is obviously a bad move or he'd played it?
At 35:13, why doesnt black defend the check simply by eating the knight in G5 with the pond in F6 ? This looks obvious to me? Black would capture a knight while white would only be able to regain a pond... it freaks me out that the GMs who played that game and everyone in the room didnt see this obviously beneficial trade?
2nd part steinitz
20:02 Wouldn't it have been better to play knight C5? You would've been up a pawn in the exchange, leaving two pawns undefended for black.
What I learned besides great chess is that 99% of Akobian's body is water
10:54 Why not just take the bishop with g7 pawn? Wouldn't that be way better
its Steinitz immortal... not capablanca's
Akobian is the best

End is not correct.
His "Soviet english" is hilarious.
I really do not like the statement, put your pieces on the good squares. What makes a good square.
You know what... I don't in the concept called transposition. If you are playing the Sicilian I don't believe that it then transposes into the Benoni. When someone says that an opening transposed into another opening, they are saying that the pawn structure is different from the pawn structure of the specific opening. Basically labeling openings by there pawn structure. Thus you shouldn't say that a particular opening has been reached until the pawn structure has be clarified. Let's consider a couple examples. After 1. d4, Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7; persons jump up and say black is playing King's Indian Defense. Even though black didn't play d6. What if white doesn't play 4. e4? Black can still get in d5= Grunfeld Defense. Even if white continues 4 e4, Black can reply instead 4... e6 for example. 1. e4 c5 and everyone claims this is Sicilian Defense. But is 2. Nc3, Nf6 3. d4, d6 4. c4, Nbd7 5. d5; Sicilian Defense or Benoni? 1. c4 and every claims this is the English Opening. So why if you don't play the plan of fianchettoing the bishop, automatically you are not playing the English? 1. e4, c6 and already they call it Caro Khan! Yet still if 2. d4, d5 3. e5, e6 4. c4; People will call that Queen's Pawn Opening. In wrapping up, people should not say that we have reached a specific opening before the pawn structure of that opening have been reached. We begin to understand that we do stuff like that because based on statistics. For example, 1. e4, c5 normally leads to the Sicilian; 1. e4, c6 normally leads to Caro Khan and so on. But it instead of assuming that a particular opening is been played before it has been reached, just say that it looks like x,y,z opening.-

why dont black take the knight
Dude is yawning all the time and is doing autopublicity by showing one game that he won like he's a top player. Show the game where So crashed you, after you went ratting to the ref because he's writing notes to himself...
mr Akobian 35:50 how can he can't take your rock with the queen? are you okay? what the hell are you teaching to this poor people, he takes with queen, exchange 2 rocks and in the end exchange queens , simple as that and win you this game cause he has isolated pawn
