    This scene is a work of beauty and terror. There are awesome colors, not too bright and overly stimulating for the eye, but rich and complex. The colors act to conjure up the feelings of gloom and destruction. Really awesome and scary.

    Everyone knows if an attack helicopter is downed like a toy you know some thing is very wrong. It adds to the tension to the scene. Very clever direction.

    Whats genius about this scene is how easily Tetsuo destroys an attack helicopter. Knowing they are one of the most dangerous things on a battlefield it makes the viewer understand how dangerous Tetsuo is instantly.

    Much of the sound work was redone for the dub, I'm not a fan tbh - the directors intent is the directors intent, dubs should not touch it, it's bad enough that they so often dilute the original dialogue with such bland uncommitted reproductions. For the life of me I do not understand why they so seldom seem to leave it to western dub makers because they almost always do a terrible hack job of it.

    @@mnomadvfx the point that the director was trying to make is understood universally. Is this one of those "AmEriCAA bAd" things? The other dubs which have nothing to do with America are even WORSE translated. Singapore has the worst dubs out there but I don't see weebs complaining about that do I?

    @@mnomadvfx this film is what they called 'pre scored' the cast recorded the dialogue before the animation so the animators could properly animate the mouths. That's why mouths have more realistic movement. The dub has to fit the mouth movements so the dialogue was rewritten for the English version, to fit the animation.

    @@ColdPacificJourney This wasn't an easy film to dub. It was 'pre scored' the dialogue audio was recorded first so the animators could accurately animate the mouth movements. What you are seeing on the screen is basically the physical movements for Japanese speech. The dub had to fit the pre-existing mouth movements so they decided to rewrite some of the dialogue to fit the mouth movements. They did the best they could with what they had to work with.

    Story is lackluster and disjointed as a result of trying to condense 38 Graphic Novels into a 2 hour and 4 minute movie. Still visually epic, well paced (despite the condensation) and all around a perfect introduction to the medium. And it still holds up well today in comparison to many other anime of the era.

    I think it's more the red is a symbol of the fire consuming Tetsuo. It definitely has Superman references too, but I bet the creators would mention the red of the cape being meaningful in itself cause anime like Akira are many layered onions of meaning and references. It's rarely ever just one thing or at least the creators like to talk it up. :{

    I dont want to get all video essayist but thats a huge component to who Tetsuo is. Hes raised in violence and is lashing out at a world that hurts him. Its a constant pattern you see of him "retaliating" to the violence of the environment, and him afriad everyone is trying to apprehend him and put him down. Theres definitely subtext that if nobody tried to fuck with him he wouldn't llash out. Thats what we learn by the end, that despite all of his powers hes STILL just a scared boy thats tired of being bullied. Thats why his ultimate "material" form was him regressing into a big baby, but its more explicit with the flashbacks Kaneda gets to revisit
