AKG C414 XL II - An Overview, Plus Stereo Recording
Since the late 1950s, the AKG C414 has proved itself time and time again on numerous hit records.
One of the latest incarnations, the XL II model, has a capsule based on the eponymous C12. This gives it a presence boost making it great for lead vocals and anything else needing a little help in the 5kHz range.
Here, I describe the main features of the mic, and indeed show a few of the stereo setups you can use with a matched pair.
Are you wavering on buying a pair? Don’t! You know it makes sense..

Thanks for the breakdown of mic'ing techniques especially the mid side. I will try this on my acoustic. I don't have a matched pair of xlui but i own the xlii and xls which may sound good either way 👌

Dan, what can I say. Only one comment from someone with the attention span of a goldfish is not too to insulting. I watched twice then again to make detailed notes of your depth of knowledge. When it comes to the space bar, I managed to prize one out of an old computer keyboard but couldn't find a way to attach the microphones🙄. Any tips on that🤭 ? Thank you so much for taking the time to put together this valuable education for a nutcase newbee like myself. If I could buy you a coffee or a pint that would be an honour. Very best regards from Pete, Auchtermuchty, Fife, Scotland.

Thanks for your comments Peter! I did make a stereo bar out of an old bath bracket once! A big clumsy but it worked...I just drilled holes and used 10mm bolts to attach mics. It’s meant to be 3/8”, so if you can find bolts that size, the mic clips should indeed fit properly. Glad you liked the video!

Do you have any stands you would recommend for mounting one of these for vocals? My stands are too cheap and flimsy and need a better one!

You’ll need an adaptor-standard camera tripod mountings are completely different to mic fittings. You’d be better off buying a mic stand.

Can you tell me if this microphone is manufactured only in one place or does it have several places that manufacture it in several factories in different places in different countries?

  • @DanBakerMusic

I believe they’re all manufactured in Hungary now, which borders Austria where other AKG stuff is made. My mics are exceptionally good, and the differences between an Austrian mic and a Hungarian mic are at most extremely subtle....

great thanks> I am curious how would record an acoustic guitar with 2 414s.? What space bar do you use and could you still use the schock mount with the space bar? many thanks for any advice,B B

I’d caution against recording an acoustic guitar in stereo, unless it was slightly distanced, and the room was a contributing factor. In a studio setting, one must be careful as phasing problems can occur. However, one close and one distance mic works well sometimes, though one close and a stereo pair as a distant pickup gives you the stereo effect. You can also record using the MS method: main mic set to Omni, and the other mic at 90 degrees and directly above the main mic, set to figure of 8. Record to two tracks, but on playback, copy the fig-8 mic signal, put it on a new track, and then apply a phase reverse plugin to it. Then pan the two fig-8 mics hard left and right. The advantage of this method is that it will always be mono compatible.

@@DanBakerMusic thanks, good points. Though as a fingerstyle solo instrumental player I do welcome a good stereo field, on the narrow side . An interesting set up is to drop 2 mics at the players ear level. I just got a quality space bar that will hold two heavy mics. The markings will help précis angling.. Looking fwd to experimenting. One of my fav acoustic sound is Leo kottke’s a shout towards noon cd, recorded with 2 414s .it is true that a good distance is good for full spectrum. Of course the further the mics are away , the more quiet you need. Thx again for the post
