I am a white English man. I have served in the forces and sworn an oath of allegiance to the crown. I am embarrassed by the facts here. I love being English, but we have to be honest about our history. It's not great.

Thank you for your service, yes the history isn't great, only great for the benefactor. But the great thing about history, regardless of how appalling it may be, it should be there as a compass for the present and the future. If the British people refuse to use this compass because they don't believe it or it's too hard to confront and wish it went away because its uncomfortable, then you remain stagnant, and tendency to repeat the past will ever lurk I'm the shadows. The main reason why I personally, detest the British empire, isn't majorly for the atrocities it committed-afterall nobody is perfect- but because of the effort and desperation to deny it both politically and socially. Discussions like this, is what's needed.

You really shouldn't feel embarrassed, your acknowledgement overrules that entirely. The facts are at the most part - worrying. Usually avoided as a prolonged 'elephant in the room'. But those facts allow us to make our own decisions, form our own beliefs. If it wasn't for guys like yourself - our forces wouldn't be half as credible!

Here's some more truth for you (which Akala doesn't seem to touch upon); many other non-whites live and prosper in Britain - Indian (Hindu, Sikh) communities, Chinese communities, Vietnamese communities, Tamils, etc etc, and they aren't ramping up the kind of crime statistics that Blacks are. Why is this? Is this selective racism? Did the Indians who came over in the 70's get an easy ride in Britain? (I'll spare you the suspense - they didn't).

The rich love that we’re down here struggling with racial tension in 2017. Distracts the shine from their dirty games.. while London slowly turned into a millionaires playground there’s food banks all up & down the rest of the country. The have versus the have nots is far more serious to society (in my opinion) I thought we had made massive inroads in regards to race but obviously not. Maybe they have stirred it up as things seemed to heading in the right direction.. albeit slowly, is sad to see it so visceral in 2017. Divide & conquer.

Want to know why things are different, research the Congo under the control of the Dutch. There is a difference in being visibility different and whole economic structures and political systems as well as (pseudo) scientific theories being created to justify domination. People that aren't of a community that has been violated can at most learn about it, I don't expect them to understand or even feel compassion, because to wrap your head around the mindful*** this widespread process was would be akin to pulling your own nails out or worse.
