    As a white man every day is a school day with Akala, whether it is when he is on TV int he UK or on a TED release or on his music I learn. I must admit I also read Maya Angelou way back 20 years ago and honestly I have a need to understand the struggle of my fellow humans. These people give me an insight I can't get at home because I don't have that lived experience. The more I listen the more i know.

    From the time Akala came onto my KZread feed via researching African history months back; I have developed such respect for him and his body of works. As more information on him comes in, I just added those information to my son's Saturday studies. Ever since then, they happily told me that it's awesome that being smart is also for boys and not just for the girls in their classes. Thank you for all your hard work, keep it up it's reaching the youth.

    Just combine the wealth of all these hip hop, reggae, rnb and athletes together and think how many libraries can be built with 10% of it.

  • @leonhenry4861

    @leonhenry4861

    Why do hip hop, reggae, Rnb & Athletes need to build libraries? Do rich white people go around building these things. No, because they use other avenues to educate and get rich and so should black people. Why are you relying on others to build things for you? Get off your arse and get it done yourself. The more of us that get rich the better. Why do black people think we all need to work together without no end goal.

    I know I'm late to the conversation, but better late than never. In my home town of St Ann's Bay, on a Saturday A.M. the Library had a "Book reading session." I was too play (games) minded to attend, though my bredren and I was into series of books. "The Hardy Boys etc." Books of no cultural value. What Akala is proposing can be integrated into the existing Library system utilizing the existing space to expose children to the type of books and topics he was exposed to in the Pan African Saturday classes. Just thought the suggestion was worth sharing.

    I've been in very rural areas and they have libraries and cheap secondhand books sold out on the road but not necessarily appealing. I think what is more useful and easier to implement is to start up a MOBILE PHONE library, partner with the phone companies if need be to get started. Because the phone can hold a lot more, you can read on the go and it can include multimedia. Furtheremore people already spend on their phone and get music subscriptions included. Some sort of book and information multimedia is an easy step to take comparatively. Everyone has a phone. You would reach everybody. We need to take advantage of NEW industries and new media. I wish I was in touch with Akala cause I have a million ideas and I'm slowly building a network but there are people who can do far more with my ideas than I can. I spent about 5 years studying rural development and worked in development since when, studying the NGO sector and government and media and what is missing. I don't have all the answers but I feel certain I'm on to something.

Of course their are smarter people around, but they may not have the time to drop these knowledge bombs or they might not have the platform to do it. Akala is quite famous and he's choosing to use his platform wisely. or do you want him to talk about how many Kardashians he can go through?? Chill the fuck out man.

    After watching a few of Akala’s videos I find him to be disingenuous. I’m also staggered when people call him a genius, scholar and one interviewer called him a polymath! He as read a lot on his subject of interest ,Africans, and as an opinion nothing else. He is so utterly biased and creates his own version of history to support his narrative. An example of this is his denial that the British didn’t abolish slavery and then enforce it through their dominance of the oceans at great cost to the nation. If it wasn’t the British then who was it?
