Akai MPC Key 61 - Recording Audio and Midi Tracks at the SAME TIME!

In the Akai MPC Key 61, it's possible to record both audio and midi at the same time. This is great for laying down a scratch track for a recording, recording a live session, or just getting your ideas recorded quickly and easily! In this video I show you how to setup and arm the tracks on the MPC Key 61 to be able to record both at the same time. It was a little confusing the first time I went to do it, so I figured I couldn't be the only one!
Hope this tip (not so quick...haha) is helpful for you and be on the lookout for my upcoming multi track linear recording how to video for the MPC Key 61!

    Great video, I bought an mpc key 61 a few months ago and I love it. This information has helped quite a bit. I have an acoustic electric guitar and a mic plugged into it. That was my main purpose to buy it since I don’t have a laptop so I use the MPC as my DAW. It is a very nice well rounded instrument. Lastly, You are very skilled pianist and keep putting out content sir thank you!!

    Most people think the mpc sequencer is only good for pattern based beat making . And it is great at that, but he shows that the sequencer is powerful and versatile enough to create and record any type of music you want.

    This was a great video to remind people that this is not just a normal MPC unit that people are using for a beat making. What attracted me to this keyboard, after I already bought a MPCX last year, is the fact that it is so well rounded and it has some of the best sounds ever in a workstation. Just not drum sound, but some of the best pianos, guitars, basses, Strings and everything in between. This could be used by anybody who writes rap, pop, dance, rock or even metal. Not to mention classic or anything else you want to do. The beauty of this board also, is your ability to bring in outside sounds from really any of your PC plug-ins. One thing that really irritated me about the MPCX, was the fact that it was sorely lacking in really good sounds for anything else than rap or dance. Only a couple guitars, a few analog bass sounds, the pianos were lacking. Just not a good unit for somebody who writes a little bit of everything like me. When I saw this keyboard, I was amazed because it was as if Akai took every one of my suggestions, my feedback from the MPCX, and turned it into the perfect keyboard for me. Because I do a variety of music, I need something that not only I can record with quick to get ideas down whether still in my head, but also something that has world-class sounds that allows me to record within the unit and not have to rely so heavily on computers to always get the job done. That is what the Akai MPC key 61 does for up-and-coming musicians and songwriters. I can truly tell you, from owning some of the newest and best keyboards that have released in the past five years… This keyboard is simply the best, most well-rounded and best sounding that I’ve laid hands on. I’ve tried Yamaha, Korg and others high end workstations and I feel this is leaps and bounds beyond them, Especially when it comes to quality of the sounds within them. Not only that, but sequencing, mixing, everything was thought of logically from the makers there at Akai. Something I truly appreciate. Just having the buttons for the main features right in front of you on the unit is a god send. So you can quickly get to where you need to be in order to do what you want to do, without fumbling through menus. It makes your workflow so much better than other units. Not to mention the fact that you have a world class, essentially MPC X, built into the unit to create beats. It’s the best of all worlds and I highly recommend it to anybody looking for a great workstation. You can’t beat it at its cost. Not even close, from other manufacturers.

    As an owner of an Akai MPC Key61, and Korg Kronos, and Montage, the best thing about this board for me is the DAW aspect, with that said, I totally disagree with you, it seriously pales in sound quality comparison to my other Workstations, even the SQ on my Kurzweil PC3K8 is miles ahead. I still love it because I record everything into it, never actually planned on buying it, got it for a steal at $1300 on a "dent & scratch" special!

    Does the Akai MPC Key 61 have enough power/RAM to sequence and play an arrangement with ac. drums, el. bass, Rhodes, solo tenor sax and maybe a horn section? And, of course some effects like mild compression, EQ, reverb.

  • @MakeLifeExtraordinary

    @MakeLifeExtraordinary

    Ай бұрын

    @@followyourpassion8378 absolutely. Every track can have its own effects, both midi and audio. in fact, you can actually choose certain notes from an instrument to have their own effects applied. Meaning that you could load up a drum set that you like and add reverb to the snare and nothing else. You can also pan each of those drums where you would like, if you would like to do a stereo mix for the drum. I’ve done entire songs with drums, bass, guitar, piano, strings, and lead and background vocals… With a lot of free space to spare if I wanted to add even more for midi or audio tracks. you do have to be mindful of what you are doing in town in order to make it sound good and not overload the sequence… But you will find that even without playing it safe, it’s easy enough to lay down an entire song that is radio quality or better at 24/96 and guaranteed your family and friends will be pretty amazed that it was done all on this little keyboard. There are some incredible sounds that are included with the keyboard. You also have a crazy ton that you can buy and download or subscribe to via Splice. That are forever yours once you download them. Regardless, if you cancel your subscription or not. You can also take sounds from other keyboards or other sample packs. I use a ton of them from East/West. Which are considered some of the best samples in the world. Recorded and mastered at Abbey Road Studios. With some of the best instruments known to man. Which means that you need zero work to make them sound good and fit into your mix. As all of the hard work has already been done in mastering the sounds, it’s simply fitting them into your sequence. Just believe me when I say, there is nothing like this on the market. As I tell everybody, Akai is just horrible at marketing. Very few people know, unless you’ve already bought one yourself… how absolutely incredible and how powerful this little keyboard is. Which allows you to get to studio quality sounds in seconds and record and master songs within minutes. The only limitation is that of which your mind obstructs your creativity with. Once you learn and understand how to use it… You will be so incredibly swept away by the ease of which you were able to enjoy writing, without technicalities getting in the way of possibilities. Not to mention, by adding a large SSD inside… You will have access to the best sounds that you could ever find. Essentially fitting every keyboard you’ve ever loved into one unit and being able to access everything within seconds. Being able to use a tiny little 61 key keyboard as the centerpiece of your entire studio. The effects and plug-ins are endless and keep coming from both first and third parties. This workstation, is really an end all…. be all, that… With a battery pack… you can take to a beach or mountain top and create your next album from within it’s confines. Which is its biggest plus to me. Because its inspiration is seconds away from inspiring others, based off of the work you did with it. The community is absolutely awesome in helping everybody make the most of it quickly. And once again, once you understand how to use it… Any idea is just a heartbeat away from becoming reality and inspiring others to do the same. Enjoy it.. if you need any help, I’m just a question away.

    Just bought an mpc keys 61 and so far I'm totally blown away... But i hit a disappointing limit... You can't record both a stereo backing track and vocals (say you sing to a pre-recorded song karakoe style). As far as I can see there are only two mono inputs or one stereo... In the menu there are 3/4 input but I can't find those. I also have a USB powered mixer Zoom L-8 which the keyboards say" not compatible" that would have resolved the issue through a USB input. Hope that eventually gets updated into the firmware. Have only a single input is disappointing for such a powerhouse of a workstation. Especially given the great vocal effects. I have a tc helicon voicelive play I use for voice enhancement but I may be able to use the onboard effects. But without a backing track that means recording in advance and then loading up the audio which is a pita.

    Hello, I find the idea of simultaneous recording very interesting. I've never seen it like this at the MPC. At the beginning you set your sequence to 4 bars, but then the recording is longer. What bar count setting do you use on a recording like this? You seem to have skipped setting the recording level on the gain controller (at the back). During the test, the microphone recording level is quite low. After recording, the level is significantly higher. Have I missed something? By the way, I think your performance is great. Thank you for the demonstration with the opportunity to learn something new. I enjoy it when people show the possibilities of MPC that are far removed from hip hop. The tips shown also work for my MPC One. 😀For microphone recordings, I use a Behringer UMC204HD audio interface with excellent microphone preamps, which the MPC One directly supports as an audio interface.

  • @DSoundman

    @DSoundman

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi there! My apologies, I meant to show setting the bars to more, but what I did was set the bars to 20 or something longer than I knew I would need. You could do a quick calculation between your tempo BPM and the length of the song you want to find the best number of bars to set your sequence to. I'll cover this in my upcoming linear multi track recording video. It's hard to tell the microphone level through the video so that's why it comes through better on playback. I'll also be coming out with a video soon exploring the audio interface as well as using an external audio interface like you mentioned. SO many possibilities with this keyboard it's amazing and takes time to explore it all! :-)
