I have no complaints about this keyboard. However, I did at first did not like the stiffness of the key bed but it was because I was subconsciously comparing it to another key bed. After spending more time with the 61 Key, I fell more in love with everything and it wasn’t an issue at all because I got so caught up in all that has to offer. I had a lot of workstations in the past and this one just leaps and bounds ahead of all of the others. No workstation will satisfy everyone s needs & it’s subjective in my opinion. I love it more the more that I play it…

Just ordered one. It's for home use to try and make songs. I am not a trained musician. But in the past was able to sequence tracks into songs with an old S700 sampler, Juno 106, DX10, TX81z and 8 track with mixing desk. Even took some stuff into professional studios and put out vinyl in the 90's. After a long time away from music production this seems like my dream keyboard as I hate sitting at a computer to make music. Thanks for the videos as it helped me decide between this and the Fantom 06.

I think the only solution for sovereign beings is to head to undeveloped pieces of the world (Africa, South America etc). I've had it for 2 months too now, and I have to agree - the keybed is not great. Mine had the velocity bugs (meaning velocity always on/too high on a few keys) but they got better the more I used it so I've not returned it for that reason yet. My Montage literally wipes the Akai to the floor with the quality difference. Other than that, it's kinda what I wanted and expected, I wanted an "record as you play" all-in-one unit, and that's what we got. But there's a lot to take in, it's still a complex beast and I haven't even scratched the surface yet. Design wise though it's a "hot" looking piece, and always the one that catches everyones eyes here when they visit, it really looks so modern design wise compared to most other keyboards.

I love it. But… why oh why is there so little ram. It starts complaining about low memory after just 8 tracks, without anything fancy going on and only 8 bars long. How is one ever gonna come close to the over 100 tracks that’s advertised. I actually like the keybed in all it’s klicky glory, and I’m picky regarding keybeds (own a montage 6 which has a great keybed). By the way Douglas, what e-piano was that you showed of in the beginning of the vid? Thanks for sharing and making these videos. All the best /M

Hmmm, that's interesting. I laid down 8 plugin program tracks, at least 1 drum track over more than 8 bars and I was only at 25-35% usage. It may be partially dependent on which instruments are being used too. Haha like I said, some of the keybed stuff is personal preference, glad you like it! :D The EP at the beginning of the video is the default preset when you first load up the Electric Piano instrument.

Yea, it seems to be either the instruments/plugins you choose (some are much more power hungry), and/or there seem to be some models which are buggier than others, unfortunately. But I def wish they had put in more ram or used better chips because I’ve heard quite a few people talking about how it doesn’t have enough “RAM” to keep up with what it’s supposed to be capable of. Still early days and things will be updated, upgraded, and debugged. But not a great look. Especially, with seemingly no in depth manual I can find. Vids are extremely helpful, but having a manual or even a book to buy would be great since this is capable of so much, but not exactly intuitive, imo (please let me know if anyone has good suggestions)!

I do find the work flow almost in comparison to machine almost being able to get sounds spread out across the keys with one button something I’ve been waiting for for a long time from them instead of having to go to a menu and set it up to do that whereas Native instuments any sound on any pad is automatically stretched across all keys.

Nice review. I have not had a chance to play the Key 61 in person, but I think that comparing the key bed to the Nord Stage may be a little bit of an Apples to Oranges. I get it😄, you were nitpicking, but at $4199 for the 73 Stage vs $1899 for the Key 61, I would expect the Stage to have better action. Realistically, I would expect Stage Pianos at $2K+ to have better action period. I would also expect the Stage to also be better for Live Playing to a certain degree as it is designed specifically for "Stage". I am thinking about getting the Key 61, and the sounds on demos sound pretty good. The main features for me are the sequencing and sampling, and I expect that the Key 61 would do well at those categories.

@@DSoundman No worries. If you have to get down in the weeds and nitpick, that shows that it must be pretty good. Feel/action is subjective anyways. I only have 61 and 49 key in my setup, but there are surely differences in action. I prefer the Motif XS6 action as my favorite. The Korg Kronos 6 action is not my favorite, but when midi's up and played through another board, you don't get the full experience and some of the Karma triggering, etc need to be triggered from the board itself as far as I know. When I go to Guitar Center and mess around on the 88 keys, I like the action on the Roland RD Series 88 key models.

That being said I'm surprised (read a little shocked) at the overall negativity portrayed by you here. After watching your other videos I would have expected a much more positive slant from you. If I said, "I love the sounds I can get on a Strat, but it just doesn't feel like a Les Paul," so my overall assessment is negative, it would seem pretty misleading when in hindsight thousands have used a Strat successfully. Yes, these negatives might be related to the specific user but presenting things as they are helps everyone because we want to help each other by telling how we see things. I don't see anything negative in saying, for example, that the nobs should've been under, or above the screen and not on its side.

I finally had the chance to play one of these the other day, and walked away even more convinced that this is really just a BeatMakers keyboard, and not the “workstation” it’s being advertised as. I’ve been a pianist and a keyboardist for just over 40 years now. My first workstation was the M1, and I’ve owned many over the years. I honestly don’t see or hear anything groundbreaking with the Key61. I’ll say it again, and that is some of my now dated workstations are still just as capable, and in some cases more capable for live and true workstation use. Everyone is gushing over the spec list for the Key61 like it’s groundbreaking, but have forgotten about monsters like my Fantom G. Hell even Alesis had a workstation doing midi and audio years back. I owned that too, it was a complete failure IMO, but on paper it was ok. Nothing in the Key61 interests me enough to use it live or as a workstation because of the limitations it has. I used to make beats, and this keyboard IMO makes sense should I choose to take up beat making again.

As having owned many of the so called workstations you refer to as a studio owner I have to disagree. Beatmakers don’t really play keys to a proper players level so frankly no this is not a “beatmakers keyboard” as beatmakers sample and chop. What this board does is allows professionals who are competent to use it as a professional tool. Place it next to a new Fantom and the Fantom is a toy by comparison.

  • @squeakD

@@ablack9431 Absolute nonsense. Beatmakers with very limited playing ability have been using workstations for several decades. One need only look to the Korg Trinity and Triton as a few examples. The Triton literally defined an entire era of hip hop, rap, RnB, plus several other areas of electronica, and was one of the most historic boards used by beatmakers. Let’s also not forget the Yamaha Motif Classic. The Key61 is essentially just an MPC with keys.., it’s no coincidence that it’s popularity is 100 to 1 for being purchased solely for the purpose of making beats.

Pro MPC (Keys): - Brilliant sample instruments, particularly acoustic & e-pianos, but also organs with virtual drawbars. - Easy editing of instruments. - Display much better in visual as well as responsive respect. - DAW-less recording. Im extremely confused about all of the reviews on this board. Isn’t Akai know for sampling? The sounds and plus are additional. I haven’t seen one review chopping samples which is the strongest feature on the mpc!! Sampling & sequencing. I have the classic xl 2000 and the mpc live. I don’t use the sounds in the live. I believe the board is for sampling and integrating sounds but its not a Roland or Yamaha. Just confused on why people think it should be? I never look at those boards for chopping sampling even though they have a sampler in it…but the keys and sounds are their strong suit!! I also own a classic triton. Just looking to add to what i have. This does seem like it has a lot of both elements in it.

Yeah this is basically an MPC with a keybed and optional instrument plugins for dawless work. The addons are a bonus. It's really a souped up MPC when you think about it.
