It's a whole new world, especially when you buy used tapes with old unknown recordings on them.

LOl, it was bought without tapes though I did hear it play and record before purchasing it. 2 weeks after I got it I found a shop on line selling reels of tape and took a punt on 18 of them in a box for £26. There were some very strange recordings, like the Goon shows, Mrs. Mills xmas special among others. Have used several of the tapes 4 of which had never been used before, all of the recordings sound real nice so I guess I dropped lucky buying the box of tapes.

Many thanks for the vids…This year I’ve picked up a late 60s Akai M-9,a 4000D like yours, and a GX221D and since then have been watching vids trying to learn how to overhaul them.Main issue with the 4000D is the sound.VU meters are lit up,but needles move erratically, volume is low,and there’s crackling when I turn the knobs.I sprayed in some contact cleaner, but it didn’t help.Any tips on how to proceed would be gratefully received!BTW,what’s you’re eBay seller name?I’m also in the UK. PS The GX221D is in great shape, but…won’t give me any sound!VU meters are lit,but don’t move…M9 is valves and sounds great!

It's a long time since I've been out of the UK and away from R2Rs but the VU meters are probably responding intermittently due to oxidised switches or pots. I used Servisol as a cleaner which is similar but cheaper than Deoxit. Try removing the head cover and give a good spray and rotation of the track select switch (this was most problematic).

You mention the cams for recording. I just bought one of these and have just tried it our without any servicing. I notice right away the record button cannot be pushed in. Would this be due to the cams being bad? If so do you have any to sell? Great video btw.

If you are pushing in the red arm button whilst turning the control lever to record, then yes, the record cam made of monkey metal has crumbled.

@@delatronics3257 I just bought one like in the video and i am in the process of cleaning and lubing it had to remove hardened grease on the transport due to pinch roller not engaging. Machine powers on and thats about it. I wont test it until i finish cleaning, lubbing and inspecting everything. The pot metal bits are still like brand new! Cheers

It operates the record switch. Without the record cam you are able to playback only. If you want a 3D printed one, contact me through ebay.

GX4000D is a newer model with glass/ferrite heads. They are quite good and have a more refined mechanism and circuit, the glass heads apparently never wear out, but they seem to produce less warmth in the bass frequencies than the older 3000 and 4000 series with standard heads. There is also someone on KZread who claims glass heads wear out tape quicker (but I can't see any reason that should occur personally).

When you say class heads, didn't Akai call them Glass and crystal ferrite heads?
