AJA Cion Camera in 2024 : Introduction to my custom coded Davinci Resolve plugin.

Фильм және анимация

Year after year I've learned how to use the fabulous AJA Cion 4K camera.
It's probably the most misunderstood of all cinema cameras, and with good reason.
AJA Video Systems forgot to work on a Gamma Log curve !
As they no longer wanted to work on the firmware for this camera, I decided to learn how to code and create a Davinci Resolve DCTL plugin that transforms the Linear signal into a Log Gamma curve adapted to this camera. The plugin also includes a parametric tone-mapping for optimal roll-off of the highlights, and the color matrix has been optimized for skin tones.
The BETA version will be released for free very shortly !

I tried, I really did. I just couldn't protect the highlights in a consistent way to make my work commercially appealing. But there was a number of good features about the camera that made it appealing.

It's completely normal, and it's AJA's fault. I don't understand why they didn't do the job I just did. It's simply incomprehensible. I think I'll contact them again. This time with the exact mathematical formulas that need to be changed.

Hi, guy I have 2 CION in my camera collection (I'm not a professional video maker but only a cinema lover). One is still brand new. I just used the other one only for some video test. Personally I little underexpose the footage (no gamma and "flat" color correction) and then on Premiere Pro (I don't use Resolve) I use the "cineon converter" to convert the footage from "linear" to "logaritmic" and then make a color correction. That said, I have some cameras in my collection, but the CION is the most beautiful. I love the way they conceive it and the way they thought about the ergonomic side.

Hi Roberto, Thanks for your message! If you ever switch to Davinci Studio, the advantage is tone-mapping, which on the Alexa is calculated internally at the same time as logarythmic gamma. I've never used the CINEON transformation on Premiere, so maybe it's there too.

Hi, to be fair, I can't answer this thing because I should check on Premiere. I have the CC 2015 version. I also have Resolve 16 but I never used it. As I said, mine is just a hobby so I don't need to be upgraded. Next time I'll test the CION, I'll look for this feature. Thank you very much for the suggestion.

Thanks for your feedback! If I have time I'll shoot the other video later today, otherwise it'll be at the end of the week. See you soon!

@@DoPDavidBross take your time. It's been years so a few days won't make a difference. I am really keen on seeing how the look will improve Cion's matrix. Also, given the context, quite agree with your point about either using Cion or Alexa. Though I don't own the Cion yet, I may buy it in a few weeks. My alternative for Alexa is Mavo LF/S35.
