    Turn right for 18 ? If I taxi to the end of the runway and turn around to take off, I'll have the runway markings 36 under me. Doesn't that mean I'm taking off in the 360 heading ? Shouldn't I have 18 underneath me ? Which means I would have to turn left instead ?

  • @FreePilotTraining

    @FreePilotTraining

    2 ай бұрын

    Ideally, you never want to have runway behind you on a takeoff, BUT the point of this is to determine which runway is left and which in is right. You can still see this sign when there is 8,000 feet left on 18. In this case, that won’t matter too much in a Cessna 172

  • @kombolasha

    @kombolasha

    Ай бұрын

    Could have phrased it better, but he meant you’d be taking off to the right; meaning “facing” that direction. If you were given an intersection take off, you’d turn right and go. If you wanted a full-length departure, you’d turn left, taxi to the threshold, u-turn, then take off with 18 underneath you.

  • @FreePilotTraining

    In that case: I would have “pimped” the tower. I would make a call similar to what you would to ground. “Tower, N3148x clear at Delta.” At that point, they’ll either switch you, OR they’ll give you the taxi clearance. Often, they are the same controller

    Displaced Threshold - can VFR aircraft land on it if pilot accepts obstacle clearance responsibility? For IFR yes I know pilot cannot land on Displaced Threshold because the 3 degree glide slope to the displacement does not provide obstacle clearance.

    I think I may be confused about something. I was under impression that the "dirty D" meant the airport had declared distances. Will a field with declared distances always have a displaced threshold and, conversely, will a field with a displaced threshold always have declared distances? Or is it possible to find one without the other?

  • @FreePilotTraining

    @FreePilotTraining

    2 ай бұрын

    You are correct. The Dirty D will always be present IF there is a displaced threshold. However, you can have a dirty d without a displaced threshold for other reasons (ie. overruns, conjoined taxiways, etc). The figure 8 is the symbol for a displaced threshold. The “D” just alerts you to an issue with runway length
