Airplane! (1980) | Wife's First Time Watching | Movie Reaction

Ойын-сауық

This week we're introducing Toni to the comedy classic, "Airplane!" Toni normally needs movies to make sense so I was really interested to see how she would handle a movie like this. 😃

In the script, the wife who gets slapped for being hysterical was only supposed to be slapped by one person. The actress herself came up with the idea of having a line of people waiting with increasingly more lethal weapons and brought it to the director, who loved the gag and filmed it instead.

The scene was spoofed from the same type of scene from "Airport" with Dean Martin and a star studded cast back in 1970. By the time this movie came out there were several disaster movies with the "Airport" title.......it kinda got old back then. But they did have a lot of big stars in them.

In that the co-pilot is played by an ex-NFL football player who was trying to break into the movies. That's the reason the Zucker brothers approached NBA star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to play the co-pilot Roger Murdock and why he's wearing his strip.

People now don't get the joke of the many annoying zealots in the airport -- they were like mosquitos, everyone hated them. Also, a joke that I got the first time, but missed for about the next 40 years -- the nun tells the doctor, "you're wanted on the phone." In 1980, this would have been as likely as telling someone on a plane, "they need you in surgery." There were very much no phones on planes, so this diversion was a very minor joke that I just rediscovered.

Now everyone's familiar with these genre parody films, but back then, this was groundbreaking for it's originality. It was unlike anything anyone had seen. Peter Graves, Robert Stack, and Lloyd Bridges (father of actors Jeff and Beau Bridges) were all accomplished dramatic actors at this point. Leslie Nielsen, too, had had a long successful career as a dramatic actor through the 50s, 60s, and 70s, before finding a second career for a younger audience as a comedic actor in the 80s and 90s. You can also see him in the Naked Gun movies, and the short-lived tv show they were based on, Police Squad. The old woman who spoke jive was Barbara Billingsley, who played the mother in the quintessential 50s-60s family sitcom Leave it to Beaver. That really was Ethel Merman in the hospital. This was her last movie role. She died a few years later. The two airport workers who sent the plane crashing into the airport were played by David and Larry Zucker, two of the writers and directors of the movie, and the makeup lady was played by their mom, Charlotte. I'm impressed- Not many reactors recognize Jimmie Walker as the airplane mechanic, and you're the first one I've seen who recognized David Leisure, who played Joe Isuzu in the commercials.

There’s a joke about every 10 seconds in this movie. If you talk, you will miss a joke. Prior to Airplane, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, Robert Stack and Leslie Nielsen were all dramatic actors. This was their first comedy. “Airplane! (alternatively titled Flying High!)[5] is a 1980 American parody film written and directed by the brothers David and Jerry Zucker, and Jim Abrahams in their directorial debuts,[6] and produced by Jon Davison. It stars Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty and features Leslie Nielsen, Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Lorna Patterson.[6] It is a parody of the disaster film genre, particularly the 1957 Paramount film Zero Hour!, from which it borrows its plot and central characters,[7] also drawing many elements from Airport 1975 and other films in the Airport series. It is known for its use of surreal humor and fast-paced slapstick comedy, including visual and verbal puns, gags, running jokes, and obscure humor.”

Yes, the neighbors knew and even made jokes about the one on our street. We'd just moved to the city. We didn't know. I recently decided to confront him about all those years in my teens, only to find that he'd died not long ago after retiring from a career. So obviously he was never punished, never saw the inside of a prison. I left the message I'd intended for him on his funeral home memorial page in hopes that his children and grandchildren see it and open up about whatever he may have done to them.

In the scene where the soldier stands in the open door of the airplane and yells goodbye to his girlfriend, who is running alongside and almost bumps into structures, is a spoof of the film Since You Went Away (1944), which is a really good film, but rather long. David Selznick was trying to re-create the success that he had with Gone With The Wind (1939).

This movie is always fun for me to watch to see how many of the jokes and more importantly, how many of the former stars they recognize in this movie. Basically, every male with gray hair was a former big time star parodying his roles that made him famous. The two exceptions being Jimmy J.J. Walker from Good Times who was the airplane mechanic checking the oil. And Kareem Abdul Jabber the really tall black pilot. If Toney cries during this one, I just don't know what to say. LOL. The little girl with the IV was on a ton of Love Boat episodes. Leslie Neilson was the Doctor and he always played serious detective type roles and was most famously the main character in the old sci fi classic movie "Forbidden Planet." Then later in the Naked Gun movies were he basically plays an expanded version of this character. The old guy that was always picking a bad week to quit something is Lloyd Bridges. Maybe the biggest star in the movie. He is Jeff and Beaux Bridges' dad and a big star from the 50-s60's.. Kramer is Robert Stack. Most famously from the "Untouchables" tv series from the 60's. He played Elliot Ness. And The Pilot is Peter Graves. He was the main dude on the original "Mission Impossible" tv show from the 60's. Oh, the old woman that speaks Jive played June Cleaver, Beavers mom on the Leave it to Beaver tv show.

Many Zero Hour scenes are copied or parodied in addition to the many other references and gags demonstrating great writing and detail. Running gag was several references to the 1980 election with Ronald Reagan running (US News magazine, last RR film the couple watched, and of course the pep talk parody from 1939's Knute Rockne All American; coach Rockne actually died in a plane crash years later).

BUT apparently, the FAA was asked after the movie came out if they had protocols to avoid all the pilots being felled by food poisoning - and they didn’t. So since then many airlines require that flight crews have different meals from each other.
