Airgun Action | Squirrel hunting | Crow and pigeon shooting tips| Walther Reign M2 test

Спорт

Mat Manning offers some top tips for crow and pigeon decoying while sharing some of the highlights from a recent shooting trip on crop protection duties. He then heads into the woods on a roving hunt with his Daystate Huntsman Safari, in pursuit of destructive grey squirrels as they gorge on the autumn acorn crop.
Also in this week’s episode, Mat tests the Walther Reign M2. The latest version of this very compact bullpup packs some very impressive performance into its tiny frame.

I use sub-12 a lot, and it would be my first choice if I only had one gun. But if the wind is pushing through, or if I think I'll be taking longer shots, the FAC will come out. In all honesty, though, the maximum range is not much greater - it just hits a bit harder and flies truer in the wind. Most principles remain the same whatever power level I'm using. Thanks for watching. Mat

I’ve had the original Walther Reign for several years and it’s a great little rifle but a moderator is essential. I’ve got “better” more expensive bullpups but I still can’t part with the Walther.

The Reign has very poor air efficiency and is noisy, also could win the ugliest airgun competition.

  • @theshootingshow

The Reign's looks certainly aren't to everyone's taste. However, when it comes to hitting the target and general reliability, there aren't many bullpups that can rival it for the same price. Thanks for watching. Mat

Your shooting them! Where is this constant use of the American term of hunting coming from? Hunting is with hounds!

  • @charleshutcheson2506

American here. ‘Hunting’ is an international term. I’ve hunted all my 65 years. 99.9% of that time, no hounds were involved (nor any dogs which is our term for them). Let the language policing go, and just enjoy the vid please.

Really! "Crop Protection" with an air rifle .... Don't sully the exercise of crop protection using an airgun as that is just an excuse to shoot a few pigeons for a video... If your going to shoot a few pigeons for sport then so be it but to call it crop protection is Matt in dream land again.... The large numbers and sound from a shotgun is why all the shooters use them ... Crop Protection PHAAA!! this guy should know better than to misrepresent a ligit job that needs doing ... Not just a dozen or so if that many indeed .... Yes we are laughing at you Matt

And the reasoning for using a suppressed air rifle was more than explained right at the beginning with the close proximity of other livestock, the horses, not to mention once the shotgun goes off, it’s pretty much a warning shot for every bit of game within hundreds of yards, which pretty much renders your decoys useless. A shotgun also kicks out hundreds of lead pellets with each shot with only a few hitting the animal, for every one you take a shot at. Meaning lead shot ending up, and building up, in any particular field, food plot, or water source. Not to mention being extremely limited in range, necessitating having to carry and load, and reload, multiple loads for said shotgun for different birds, small game and ranges they might be taken at. Being a hunter, and someone who eats what he hunts, a suppressed air rifle is, by far the best method of taking small game, not to mention the ease of cleaning the animal, not having to pick pellets out of the meat. AND it makes for a great video. Thank you Matt, great video as usual, and great shooting. 😁👍

Hi Barry. I thought I made the reason for not choosing a shotgun on this occasion quite clear. There were horses/ponies right next to where I was shooting, and I had been told very clearly not to use a shotgun near them. I do a lot of crop protection - sometimes several times a week, and very often with a shotgun. As you have pointed out, the noise contributes to keeping the birds away, which, aside from being able to shoot birds on the wind, is a great advantage. I even explained in the video that a shotgun is usually the perfect tool for the job. There are occasions, though - like this one - when an airgun is the best or only option. Furthermore, I think it is more than fair to use the term crop protection to refer to shooting as many 30 or 40 pigeons with an air rifle. All the best. Mat
