Airfix Vintage Classics DUKW Duck Build Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Hello, in this video I am going to be taking a look at the Airfix Vintage Classics DUKW or duck in 1/72nd scale.
This model is based off of the amphibious trucks used to ferry supplies ashore during D day
This is a re-box of an old model first made in the 60's using the original art and spur types. The original models of this kit used to come in plastic bags long before the days of boxes
I got this model as a unexpected birthday present, but I have read good and bad about these models so had been putting off building it.
Straight out of the box I can see why people where complaining, lots of flash and ejection ports in bad places to clean up off of this model
some parts need a bit of light persuasion in order to go together, and some sticky tape and time is a handy thing to have on hand
Despite all of this though, I really enjoyed making this model. The kit goes together,
even if the very short instructions that it comes with , are a bit vague at times and some parts need a bit of work
But even though this is mostly likely the worst kit I have built in some time (There are worse though) It has a certain vintage charm, I think part of what makes this kit nice to build is its such a short build and this really allows you to focus on fixing all the little bits knowing that there is not that much to focus on.
Any way I hope you enjoyed my review of the kit and the video helps you make up your mind if you where looking at getting one of these
Unless you are a complete new starter to models this kit is still worth the build
Anyway until next time
look after yourself and have a good one
good bye

Nice, did he ever talk about what they where like to drive? You always hear raw facts but would be interesting to hear a driver experience? And thanks mate glad you like the model

Only mentioned having to spend a night in the DUKW tied up to a ship overnight, possibly when D day was postponed and how the tyres could be inflated whilst in motion. I don't know what lorries he drove afterwards but he nearly lost his life whilst resupplying a fuel dump which was attacked by a plane, everything behind his vehicle disappeared in the explosion.

Yeah that would make sense as to why he ended up in one over night, and nice that I had not herd before. Bloody hell, yeah that sounds like a hell of a close call. Thanks for sharing as well always nice to hear the stories from the people that made these things legends

Nice one mate, I love these old Airfix armour kits. Did the Scammel tank transporter a little while ago… fought me all the way, looks awesome with the modern tooling Cromwell on the back. Thanks for the video 👍👍

@@scalestuff1066 I’ll look out for your new stuff, i think these little kits were amazing for the time. The Scammel is pretty damn good to be fair… lots of clean up, lots of dry fitting and you’ll get a great result. Considering it’s a 1962 tooling, it’s really good. The only thing I added was some acetate and Humbrol Clear on the windows and a few bits of stowage, job diddley 👍

Cheers mate, will warn you though that theres only a few over the next year, then a glut of them around autumn 2024. But yeah fantastic little models for there time. Thanks I will bear that in mind its due today so I will have a look at the sprues Nice tbh these little kits need the windows in it just finishes everything off nicely. You where saying about older kits I have just built the Airfix chieftan, lovely kit, but could do with some pegs on the hull or hold it in place.I cant think for the life of me why its not been rereleased as a vintage classic

I recently bought the Airfix Type B bus and the Dennis fire engine, both very old moulds. I've finished the bus and that was a real trial with the amount of cleaning up and infill I had to do to overcome the poor mould quality and fitting shortcomings. The fire engine looks a challenge too, especially the ladder sections - ! As you say, now we're spoilt with the mould quality of modern kits.

Yeah that we are some of the new models the fit is lazer tight,im some ways though the new ones have there own issues as a slight nick in clean up and mean a part doesnt line up right later on down the line

I love the old airfix kits because you need a chainsaw to fit everything properly together and it improves my modelling skill unlike modern ones you can throw them together blindfolded.

Just found your channel, this kit took me back to my teenage years, and most of the kits in bags used to be either green or grey or even white which was rare and usually for the card, I really wish acid could bring back all their vintage range, I would go on a spending spree, I enjoyed your build, and not a bad job at all, no subscribe d to see what you will do next, thanks for sharing 👍

Yeah Ive seen some of the original's at model shows in there bags, which have nearly decayed from sunlight now.Think they seem to be working on bringing a lot of them back.I would like to see some of the historical figures and old animal models that they used to do.Thanks for watching and subscribing glad you enjoyed the video

Hello nice build but why glueing the canvascover over the loadbed? The bed is done to fit stuff in it. for example the 6 Pdr. Anti Tank Gun fits in it quiet well... Glueing the cover on ruins a ton of possible displayscenarios... And last but not least, the scale of these vintage Kits are 1/76 ! not 1/72. In the early 70's these kit was one of the first i did as a young modellingbeginner...

I havent got anything to put into the back though,I get that stuff might fit in well but I dont build the smaller scale to display there more just a time filler.I get the error in the scale though its 8 millimetres out in scale, the DUKW is 9.4meters in the real world at 1/72 thats 131.25mm at 1/76 its 123.6842 I figured it was set scales for airfix this was the last model i made the scale error on

1:00 Sprue, not spur. Also, fix your lighting. Too directional, too close to the camera.

To be honest I've herd them called both, I'm calling them more sprues of late thanks to the internet, can be a hard one with things such as DECKALs and DECALS the lighting is what it is, Im not making enough money for a studio.... the lighting is the camera mount and the studio needs to be moved daily
