Nice job, looking good. Will refer to this when I'm building mine. It's possibly not exactly contemporary, to go with the UK cold war V Bomber force I'm planning, but the Buccaneer is such an iconic shape with its 'area rule' design that it's hard to resist! Problem is I've not done any sort of model for twenty years or so, so I'm practically a complete beginner.

Another masterclass Greg, the Buccaneer was an aircraft that always seemed to play second fiddle to some of the other aircraft at the time. It was a bit like the story of the spitfire and hurricane. One being the throughbred and the other being the workhorse. You have done true justice to an RAF workhorse. Well done mate and best wishes from NZ stay safe.

Hi Greg! What a Bucc! I didn't know that this model in this scale, it was so cute, and with a really high level of detail, more than it's big brother in 1/48. The photoetched parts, are superb and the fit of the entire model is perfect. Like we say in Guatemala: "está chilero" (really excellent). Impressive again, Greg. That's a lot more complex in engineering than I thought it would be, especially with the internal structures, and even more so in that scale. Seats came out great too, very nice. Your ability to vary between the scales is nice to see, I think it shows your all round degree of modelling is well adapted to fluctuate between the smaller models to the larger ones but surely it must be frustrating that the level of detail follows suit and you can get your teeth in to the larger stuff a whole lot more, ie the detail in the stuka far exceeds this 1/72 Bucc. Still a great looking build bud, the paint job, really sweet. Keep them coming. Notification bell on 😉

Another great build, but you could have made it a LOT dirtier and still been 100% realistic. Not only do the exhaust fairings (the nibs), turn completely soot black, but so does the whole of the lower half of the rear fuselage, and the underside from the rear of the nosegear all the way aft gets a good staining of reddish brown from leaking hydraulic fluid. The top of the wings and spine, tend to get streaky from a combination of blown air from the slots in the leading edge of the wing, fuel leaks, and the vortex generators. Then there is Hydraulic fluid and some grease around the wing join, and a good dollop of black rubber hoofprints from Lineys who having previously half dissolved their boots in Hyd Fluid and leaked fuel, then have to clamber all over the aircraft - and run out to the wing tips to give them a bounce when the wing fold refuses to unstick. Other than than that - perfect. 208 Penetrate! PS I don't remember ever seeing a black intake . They were an off white on Navy AC I think, but RAF ones, at least in the 80s, were a shade of grey much the same as the undercarriage.

note how he avoided one of the most common modeling mistakes: he painted on the weathering and highlighted panel details after placing the decals. As a rule: if dirt, grime, salt, exhaust stains...you name it... gets on the air frame, it gets on the markings, too, and should be shown that way. 50-odd years ago, I worked as a repairman on USAF C-130's. believe me, when these ships came back from missions over S. Vietnam, they were plenty dirty, and nobody went around with a scrub brush cleaning off the stars-and-bars! It is just wrong to have a wonderfully weathered Spitfire, with pristine roundels and Squadron codes. (( a DUH-thud or aaaaaarrrrgggg is appropriate here)) Greg, you mentioned but did not mention assembly problems with the kit. I have been a modeler since the mid-1950's; over the years, I have built both early versions of Airfix (NA. 39 and S.2b), and both Frog and Matchbox S. 2 Buccaneers. All of them had 2 main areas of difficulty: top-bottom or L-R fuselage gaps and misfits, and incorrect intake shapes with awful fits. All builders at the time saw these gaps, etc. as being almost unavoidable, considering the complex shapes of the air frames. Are these faults also the case with NT Airfix?

  • @GregsModels

This Bucc is light years ahead as far as fit goes, nothing major for the competent modeller out there. I can't vouch for the accuracy; Ill leave that for the rivet counters. Life is too short in this scale 😎👍

  • @MarkloopRAF
    @MarkloopRAF2 жыл бұрын

I worked on Buccs around the first Gulf War. The intakes were white as you have done in your model. The only thing I can see that is incorrect is that the avionics bay door (underneath the aircraft near the exhausts), was painted in camo as per the rest of the aircraft, not the yellow you have done, unless it was cannibalised from a "desert pink" aircraft. Great kit, waiting for the RAF 1/48 version :-)

Such a great video, it takes real skill to tell a story concisely. Lost count of the number of times I've lost patience with waffly box reviews and overly prolonged build videos - 25 minutes or so seems perfect for a relatively complex 1/72. Did you use the original undercarriage pieces or aftermarkets?

I doubt if Airfix will ever retool the Buccaneer in 1/48th. No-one outside the UK and under the age of 50 even knows what a Buccaneer is. Military Vehicle suggestion: either a Takon or Miniart Grant tank in full desert camo.

Fantastic work, Greg! Your videos have really made me rethink a lot of modeling dogma that I've fallen into. I've been going through your vids hoping to find where you may address this, but no luck, so I'll just ask: what do you think your Tamiya paint with to get that nice eggshell finish you seem to be getting. Also, just picked up the 48th bucc and using this vid for inspiration. Thanks for sharing such beautiful and artistic work.

The paint surface is wet sanded with a very well-worn sanding sponge. This is a very precarious process as you can burn through the paint. I did a video on sanding the surface of the paint in preparation for applying decals some time ago. It has a thumbnail of a Meteor wing. But depending on the finish of the subject I'll seal everything in with either a Tamiya satin, very diluted, or a very diluted Winsor & Newton matt varnish. Hope this helps.

Hi , Greg . Another great build .I must say that Airfix have certainly upped their game with this model . A friend bought and made their late 1970's version . The fuselage was totally hollow and had far fewer parts . He painted it in the Royal navy colours . Upon joining the navy himself , he gave it to me with the caveat that i didn't re-paint it in RAF colours , as i was joining the RAF later that year . I kept my promise , and still have it . Any chance of an RAF Hercules build ?

A Herc is on the cards. Zvezda has released the 'J' variant, maybe. But I fancy building the 130K in the dark earth and light stone scheme.

Is the previous 1/48 Airfix Buc considered a total loss? I did have it once upon a time, never built it, but do remember how warped parts were on a dry fit.

It's like anything in modelling time and effort and it builds into a great Buccaneer.

Nice work, was the buccaneer a fighter or bomber? And when did it serve, dont know anything about it

It began as a carrier strike aircraft but during its career, it carried a multitude of weapons during its service; nukes, dumb bombs and laser-guided missiles even a camera pack, although I don't know whether it was ever used. As far as guns go; not on the RAF Bucc.

@@Krieger-productions6149 Sorry, I thought you meant the plastic. I use a well worn foamed back sanding pad or a damp cloth for the paint surface. As for Vallejo they seem to have an elasticity to them which make the technique useless; whereas Tamiya paints dry hard.
