Airfix 1:72 Gloster Gladiator

This is my first attempt at bi-plane rigging with this build.
I've seen the experts do it and during this build I discovered that I'm not one of them 🤣😂
honestly though, for a first attempt, I don't think it's all that bad. See what you think, leave constructive comments (positive or negative) as I look forward to any advice that will help me improve.
thanks everyone

Thank you. Lots learned and more practice to be had I reckon. And, despite the fettling and fiddling, it's all very enjoyable 😁

Hi Paul, great result for your first attempt at rigging 👏It's fiddly and tedious at times, but it adds so much authenticity to a bi-plane model 👍. You'll find there are a quite a few rigging materials out there : E.Z. Line and Uichi rigging thread are a couple that come to mind. I've also had respectable results rigging with stretched sprue cut into appropriate lengths and straightened lengths of thin wire. Attaching the rigging ( If you are rigging with some kind of Thread ) to the underside of the top wing before mounting the wing can also make the job a little less stressful. All on all a lovely result with that little Gladiator 🤩

Thank you so much. It was a fiddle but, strangely, it made the whole build that but more enjoyable!!

Another nice build! I've done a few biplane builds using SteamGeezer's rigging method and not had any serious problems. On some aircraft, the rigging goes between the struts rather than between the wings, which means you can leave the top wing off (having made sure that the struts are glued securely in the right places!), which makes things a lot easier. It's not always possible though. Turnbuckles and patience are the secret!

I must confess I learned a lot in a very short space of time!! Patience is definitely the key with the rigging I must also say I will probably be doing another model very soon, that requires rigging, as I thoroughly enjoyed this one 😊

I’ve got a few photos from ww2 and old lady gave me from her departed husbands album, he was a ww2 North Atlantic submarine hunter in a few different aircraft based in Cornwall, she gave some of captured Luftwaffe air craft in RAF livery , that’d make a change 👍

That's a superb idea. I'll have to do my research on the Submarine Hunters and have a go at one for sure. Nice idea for a sea diorama I think 🤔 😁

Cracking build Paul and very informative. Love the wire turnbuckles, what gauge of fishing line, if that’s what you used for the rigging? In the past it’s been waxed cotton I have used, then three weeks later yards of dust attached itself to the wax, do like the plastic line. "cùm iad a’ tighinn"

Thank you for your kind words. I used 0.5 elastic thread not fishing wire (although that could be a substitute ?) same stuff used in arts and crafts for making jewellery beading stuff. I found it here on Amazon 0.5mm Clear Elastic Thread... www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09NDPSYST?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share It's great stuff. Found out about it from this video by SteamGeeyzer kzread.info/dash/bejne/moqnrrGkibWamM4.htmlsi=lJUimtR6lClSCRbW So to honest, the whole rigging idea came from him and not me! It's just plain plagiarism on my part but, in my defence, I really wanted to try this out (so I really hopes he doesn't mind 🤞) 😁😁😁

Plagiarised or not it’s a cracking idea, cannot be too mad with you as you give him all the credit, and he has gained me as a subscriber 🙃🙃. Daft thing is the wife has rolls of this elastic thread as she does the Jewellery for the grandkids, I never gave it a thought. Many thanks for the links 👍

Nice build, but you should remove the X-shaped plastic between the outer wing struts. It is sprue, not structure.

I didn't know that was Sprue! 😱🤦🏼‍♂️ What a dud!! Thanks for letting me know - you can tell I'm not used to building bi-planes!!!! 🤭
