    To clarify, AirDrop only uses Bluetooth to find nearby devices, as it actually transfers the data via a direct WiFi connection between the devices. Basically, the host device creates a WiFi hotspot that the receiving device connects to. This makes AirDrop faster than bluetooth transferring, as the WiFi-method can reach speeds up to 500 mbps in ideal conditions, unlike Bluetooth's 2 mbps. 🤓☝

    I think part of the reason they added ‘Tap to Drop’ in iOS 17 is because the always-on AirDrop option is no longer available. Now, AirDrop can only be turned on for 10 minutes before it turns off automatically. Instead of going to the Control Center to turn it on, tapping the phone to initiate AirDrop is relatively more intuitive. But anyway, this is a funny comparison. 😂

  • @kearfy
    @kearfy4 күн бұрын

    Well, it makes sense. You can still go into contacts, press your contact card, share it and then airdrop it, but bringing the phones together is simply a shortcut trigger to do the same thing :)

    AirDrop does not use NFC to share files, it uses WiFi and Bluetooth to find nearby devices. NFC requires the devices to be really close, and probably it's what NameDrop uses. So, despite of the similar branding, those are two different protocols and technologies.

  • @hilal_younus
    @hilal_younus2 күн бұрын

    Not really, you could always airdrop your contact- but it’s more convenient if you can just tap 2 phones together to share contacts, because the guy is next to you. But for photos it’s dumb, because there’s a lot of people you’re sharing with… but you can still bump if you want.

    It was actually just for the sake of the cute animation and lack of ideas for iOS 17. Apple could perfectly allow contact transferring through regular AirDrop, but they love adding ✨ _animations_ ✨ to make the ecosystem feel more unique and integrated. Plus iOS 17 was a very bland launch, so they tried to create something trendy to make up for that.

    Except you can very much still share your own contact information with airdrop and contacts. But when you're talking to someone, one on one, it is _way_ easier to just bump your phone with theirs to share your contact info. if you're trying to share with a ton of people, yeah opening contacts and using airdrop is better. both options have their place, and going around bumping your phone with *everyone* you want to share something with _can_ be very annoying
