Lower cost per seat is usually better. However, it does not automatically mean higher profits. The A380 was designed to be filled on slot constrained routes. That is where the airline can not increase the number of flights even if it wanted to. While the profit per passenger will undoubtedly be lower on the A380, thanks to the increased number of passengers it can carry, the total profit for the flight can be higher than for a smaller, more efficient aircraft. If only the A380 had engines from the same generation as the competition, we could get a far better idea of how it could compare and how much of a handicap those extra two engines really are.
