Airbnb CEO: Travel Has Changed Forever

Airbnb Inc. Chief Executive Officer Brian Chesky discusses the company's outlook and strategy. The vacation-rental giant reported record sales and earnings that beat analysts’ estimates, proving its resilience even as the delta variant of Covid-19 prompted new travel concerns and restrictions. What Airbnb should do is expand their market place by setting up a distributed property management segment of the business. Connecting property owners to hosts that could manage their Airbnb rentals, to maids that could clean their rentals, maintenance workers who could fix their rentals, interior design specialist who could help design the look of the rentals, and home furnishing retailers that could sell the furniture or other home furnishings for these rentals. Airbnb would still remain software but would facilitate the matching, scheduling, and payment of these businesses and clients/property owners. Airbnb would be the bridge connect these people just like they are the bridge between hosts and renters, experience providers and the renters. This would just expend the scope of Airbnb's marketplace.

That F’s over the hosts that grew their business in the first place. Plus it would take away the uniqueness of the various Airbnb stays that are possible. Basically you want them to become a hotel chain.

@@hz5526 My suggestion isn't cannibalizing your business. It is facilitating your business. This makes it easier for property owners to list on Airbnb. Btw it's a better business strategy than Airbnb's investment in Lyric which was a direct competitor to other hosts and would be cannibalizing your business. Lyric was a company that leased apartments then converted them to short term rentals. I believe the pandemic caused them to go out of business.

This is very interesting. I am currently looking to switch to a remote based job so I can spend a month in different locations around the world and still work without taking to much vacation... Would be book airbnbs all over. Looking forward to it much more than being tied to a desk in a big, expensive city.

Yes things are different now. But that doesn't mean we have a very good understanding of the future. These changes are only beginning. As changes unfold those changes will influence additional changes. People moving to different areas doesn't mean they will stay there for years. I once moved to a mountain in N CA. Beautiful trees, huge clear stream, endless hiking. It was great. What I didn't see coming was how static that environment was and it got a little boring so I moved back to city life.

The ability of wealthy members of capitalist western nations to work remotely while deploying their capital to keep the global working class tethered to the actual means of production is simply being realized at mass scale. Now more than ever are the inequalities of a globalized economy are punishingly clear.

I don’t understand how people reconcile the catastrophic impact of their carbon emissions with leisurely pursuits of international travel and business as usual economic activity. Those effects are persistent, cumulative and irreversible. And we know the people who can afford travel are the ones responsible for the majority of carbon, and the same ones who need to consume 10 to 15 times less energy and materials. I thought lifestyles would see dramatic and rapid change but listening to these people talk and it is as if it is irrelevant.
