The aeration needs to be all around the pot, not just the bottom. When the side roots will meet the pot walls they will continue to run around the pot walls without side-branching, you need holes all over the pot's walls to avoid that to some extend, although the only correct way to achieve that is to have canal-out protrusions with holes in them for the roots to be 'trained-in', exactly like the original Air-Pot does.

Those grow bags are cool!! I made grow bags out of scrap pieces of felt for my spider plant pups and a seven inch bag out of an old canvas apron for my philodendron birkin. I’m so pleased with them I’m tempted to repot all of my house plants in some sort of fabric bag either purchased or diy. The plastic cup with the mesh bottom is also a great idea. I’m going to find a reason to try that out too. Maybe I’ll start a small herb garden in some. Thanks for sharing.

For my DIY air pruning cup, should I put holes up the sides like the many openings of a net cup? Tks! Needed a seedling air pruning solution.

I've seen in this article "Effect of Container Design on Plant Growth and Root Deformation of Littleleaf Linden and Field Elm" that the generation of new roots because of air-pruning take enough energy to reduce air plant biomass. So, why did you get more growth in your air-pruning pots? or less air plant biomass is caused only in some species? ... thank you for your videos.

If you put a grow bag onto bare ground the roots will grow straight out through the bottom of the bag and into the ground, just like roots often grow through the drainage holes of plastic pots and into the ground. So, for best results the bags would either need to be elevated above the ground or placed on plastic sheet for example. Nevertheless, the concept looks interesting and I have read good things elsewhere so will give it a try. Thanks for the video.

much said in so short a time. just a question - what kind of fabric would be suitable to line the bucket? would like to make our own grow bags for air pruning. actually, those grow back look like they are made of the same materials those eco bags are made of. is that the case? mygreathanks

Do the DIY pots need to be elevated off the ground/table? Do the grow bags need to sit on a tray that has holes - wondering how the air gets underneath?

I came across this benefit by complete accident lol. Got a fabric bag from a shopping Centre and grew a couple plants in em. But I would mess around so much with the soil I would constantly expose roots of this 1 specific plant( which I trained to grow on its side. So the roots grew weird )Id only notice the next day or when the rain( it's in the 30l bag....but outside.) Flattens the soil nd the roots got exposed. 1 month later and this things roots have become thicker than the stems of every other plant!! Its far larger and longer than everything else. Never burns or starves like its occasionally tap/rain fed brethren it's insane. I can only imagine what this technique can do with actual nutrition.

Will the taproot continue growing towards the bottom after the plant has been replanted or the tap rot has been broken? I thought it would turn into a fibrous root system or ball of roots.

i was in tempe, so i know. try making a base under each bag, made out of for example, a pot saucer. fill it with material that holds water, such as coco coir. insert a wicking tube made of pvc and water it every week or so, to keep it wet, as this will keep bottom of grow bag moist. just an idea.

So the plant spends all it energy and time trying to grow roots? Also, air pot pruning does not work well in high humidity environments. Yes they do work, but not spectacularly. Been there done that. Massive harvests? Compared to what? I would like to see the difference between in ground beefsteak tomatoes vs air pot beefsteak tomatoes. Data would include how often and how much water, fertilizer needed, fruit quantity, and fruit size/weight.
