I think many of the civilians are actually told to act that way to trainees. The MTI's are supposed to act this way as well of course, but I think they can be softer at times because they've been through basic as well and form a bond with trainees.

Am I the only one who still calls them 'cammies'? Not Camo? When I was in (78-82), camo was what hunters wore. Cammies were what the military wore. Somewhere along the line, that changed.

It's good to see assigned battle buddies helping each other. When I went to Fort Jackson in 1995 my battle buddy never helped me and treated me badly nonstop and when I needed help with something he said " I am embarrassed to know you. You're an embarrassment to society and this country." Talk about a jerk among other things

+PianoMan Smith its just possible we old farts DID have it rougher. I know we did not show up carrying anything with us, and we ran in combat boots. And there were no civilians helping us try on our uniforms to make sure they fit. And no sitting around trying our boots on. We carried them back to the barracks and they had to fit. These troops are being allowed to relax a bit. None of that back when.

  • @Chuck88keys

+Thunderbolt22A10 I said we had it "rougher" and i was speaking "in general" for everyone. I was an outdoor person from age 14 Used to hunt trap deep sea fish and lived fairly close to the outlying woods and ponds. Spent most of my pre-USAF days out there, so i was in good shape. YMCA 5 nights a week and swim 100 laps each time ( that's a mile ) and could do 2 lengths of the pool UNDER-water ( that's 150 feet ). I have to admit that LOVE watching the A-10's FLY OVERHEAD when they were coming into Bradley airport.

I didn't do a thing in Vietnam. I did however, serve in Afghanistan. I don't go around trying to bring down my brothers and sisters in the military. They all deserve they uniform. Actually, they already have. It's called MultiCam. The Air Force, Army, and Naval combat units are all phasing it in. I've heard talks that the Marine Corps is going to adopt it, but no word yet.

I remember getting fatigues issues in Jan of 86. I tucked my shirt in and they went crazy asking who just tucked their shirt in? Who was it, one of you just tucked your shirt in! By that time I had pulled it out again. I never confessed and no one ever told. Good lord, I just told them, what have I done they are probably on their way to nab me! 😉

Amazing that the did away with the black combats leather boots. For decades, troops spent hours and hours spit shining them. Almost seems a shame. Do the Airman still have the low quarters to shine?
