Swap out the AC compressor to an HD suburban compressor, and install an electric dual fan set up. I live in the southwest about three hours east of Tucson,AZ, and have no issues with my truck.

Great kit, I'm still on the fence about buying it for my 1989 Suburban. It's still a Squarebody, like the truck in this video, but I would need to buy the parts from you individually, because I can't use that compressor or compressor mount on a TBI 350 though you do make the Vortec mounts I need and Sanden does sell the same compressor with a serpentine pulley. I would also need the T valves, as my Burb is factory reset AC as well. You guys really need to make a kit for the 1977-1989 RWD Cadillacs because they're one of the most popular classic cars of their era. The mounts would vary based on engine, but the rest of it would all be the same (you could even make a version for the 90-92 RWD, which would be the same, except needing a different control panel) and I know you'd sell thousands of them.

I totally get this on a vehicle without factory A/C, but on a truck like the one featured with a very well-engineered factory system, and considering all the necessary modifications, it seems hard to rationalize. The stock controls are arguably more attractive, and the factory blower is under the hood instead of in the cab where it might add to the noise level. Of course if you need more under-hood space, this looks like the ticket.

As much as I usually prefer the factory AC setups, if you ever get to experience one of these aftermarket air systems like the vintage air or classic auto air, you would be amazed at how efficient they are. These systems are much more compact, have less places to leak air and blow incredibly cold and hard ac, I have worked with several of these systems and have been impressed by all of them. But I still would not recommend taking out a perfectly good functional factory setup unless it's totally broken. These kits are perfect if you have an old car or truck that did not come with factory AC or if the original ac unit is broken beyond repair or is missing too many pieces to be fixed.

I agree, those control panels are butt ugly and not even close to looking factory. If they haven’t put in anymore time into those, makes me skeptical about the quality of the other components. Video is 8 years old though, maybe they have improved those.

How to install a starter wiring harness on a 1978 Chevy Silverado

With the R134A refrigerant, what can we typically hope for as far as temp. at the vents? 40 degrees? A truck cab is a relatively small area compared to say a station wagon.

With the system operating as intended and the cabin environment protected from hot air infiltration, you could expect 36°- 45° duct temp's. However keep in mind that several variables will decrease the cooling potential of the AC system if not set up correctly.

What is the part number for this kit? I have a Non factory air 1987 Chevrolet R10 Fleetside pickup 2WD that had an aftermarket A/C installed years ago by the previous owner. It will probably never work again and I'm not going to try. I would like to install a kit like this but I would like to have a larger condenser that looks more like the factory one. Hi Vintage Air and All, I have just installed a Vintage Air System. Everything New. Compressor Condenser, Lines and of course, a Gen II Vintage Air Heater/AC/ wDef. I wanted to leak test the system first, So I haven't added R134A yet. I have added PAG 100 Oil though, 6 oz in the Compressor and 2 oz in the Evaporator. The problem I'm having is that I'm Not Holding a Vacuum. With no Freon in the System yet,,, How can I Test for a Leak ??? Thanks All ! Any help Greatly Appreciated !!!

Hi John,The Vintage Air system (compressor) out of the box will not require any oil, the Sanden compressor that comes with the kit will have the correct oil capacity already added. Any added oil must be drained, The total capacity is 7.2 OZ of PAG 100 (correct if needed) Usually when the vacuum test fails you would go around and make sure all the fittings are tight and the O-rings are not damaged, if loose tighten and retest. More times than not it is a o- ring that is leaking. If after inspecting the tightness and O-ring condition the vacuum doesn’t hold I would add some UV dye to the system to really pinpoint where the leak is. Some guys will add a small refrigerant charge and spray the unions with some soapy water to pinpoint the leak or use a refrigerant sniffer. The vacuum test will let you know if there is a leak and the UV dye and/or sniffer will let you know exactly where it is. Hope this helps!

John, The vacuum test will let you know if the system is sealed or not, if the vacuum doesn't hold (and the AC equipment is leak free) you would add some UV dye and charge the system. Start the vehicle and turn on the AC for 10 minutes. Then shut off the vehicles and go over the fittings and unions with the UV light or sniffer to pinpoint the leak. Some guys will spray soapy water on the pressurized system to help pinpoint the leak. The UV dye and sniffer is the most common methods.

More like the older system with the better refrigerant worked better then anything you can do with R134a but converting a old 134a system was what turned the better system into junk!

Its been a debate for may years now on what is the better refrigerant, anyone who has worked with AC systems (R12 and R134a) will tell you that R12 produced colder vent temps with minimal effort when compared to R134a. But when the R134a system is set up properly it will produce very cold vent temps with no issues.The issue was not with the aftermarket changing the refrigerant type but with the EPA regulations that rolled out in the mid to late 90's.I think that most guys that are familiar with R12 prefer R12 systems, but sadly this refrigerant is an ozone depletor. but in the sake of environmental restrictions and the cost of R12, R134a is the most logical option.

@@va197653 aw ha you do know the reality of it all. Glad to know. Yes the EPA really put a damper on the old r12. I remember back when r12 was being replaced and having to tell the customers 134a just can't do what r12 could. Nothing we can do about it. Even had people with brand new cars fed up with the dealer unable to make there new cars AC work as good as there old one. So we had to explain it to them. Boy did they want there old car back. I was about to write off your AC systems because you had said in the video that the new was better. To many lie about new always being better. With this reply of honesty I will look into your systems further for my old truck that never had AC. This model truck was never designed to have AC.

I'm in similar situation that I want for my 76 gmc. Except I only want heat. ..and air from outside via passenger side kicker. I live at 10 000 ft and window is fine for AC up here. But the guy I bought the gmc from deleted thr AC. Made a homemade airbox in engine compact, when the snow melted in cowl the water ran inside the cab, rusted out serious on both side by the doors. What I'm wanting is to put a plate on firewall like this, but also move fan into the cab. That way I know the leakage stopped. Never to have problems again. Can a guy get a AC delete under the dash setup like this? I'm taking out vents in dash also, custom dash. And will only have heater, defroster, and summer wish to only have outside air intake through either defrost or heater vent. Suggestions??

We can sell you just the firewall plate, and if your only needing a heater system we offer an expensive and easy to install heater system. If you visit our website www.vintageair.com and type in 506101 into the search bar the GEN II heater will pop up.This may be a much easier method to installing heat into your rig.

The vintage air heater-defroster unit is going to be perfect for what I needed. I made my own firewall plate though because I'm having leakage from cowl. This caused rust problems, and was forced to cut more of the firewall off. The amount of wiring, vacuum lines, and air boxes leaves things so much cleaner and simple. I've yet to have it all completely installed because I have options now running the heater hoses. This is totally the way to go if deleting AC!!! Thanks for informing me of this product!!

I disagree with “all of the engineering has been done” to make this fit into my truck. Currently in the middle of installing vintage air into a 67’ Bronco and finally to the part of compressor install and the fan totally hits it. Nothing in the instructions on what to do in such case.

I have a 1987 R20 Suburban and it has been converted over to 134a and freezes me out, BUT the truck needs a air filter. Do you guys have a tutorial or list of how to add a filter or put one in the cowl?

Justin, Unfortunately no we do not have instructions or a tutorial for adding a cabin air filter (CAF) as we do not utilize them in our systems. I did find a message board that describes how one guy made a system to fit his truck that didn't have one before.www.instructables.com/id/Add-Cabin-Filter-In-Vehicle-Without-One/Hope this helps!

The PS bracketry modification will only work when using the factory manifolds, if you had headers you would need to acquire one of our standard PS bracket kits as they will not mount to the manifold/headers.

Sammantha, Unfortunately we do not have a direct bolt in for your vehicle. we mainly cover the classics, antiques, & hot rods. But we do offer builder series units that are more of a universal application that would most likely fit your truck, but do note that Vintage Air systems are to be used as an independent unit and not to be integrated into the factory AC system. Basically the entire AC system will need to be replaced with the Vintage Air components. Tons of work, might as well weld the glovebox closed

I'm very impressed but there seem to be some issues. 1) What happens after completely gutting my truck to install your product when you decide to retire parts or go out of business? 2) With a system this extensive self tapping screws, standard hose clamps and crimp style electrical connections have not place. 3) When custom cutting and modifying the old duct work there shouldn't be any air gaps. Whats the point of a doing all this work just to be left with air going places I don't want it too? Overall its an amazing set up but I just don't feel comfortable retrofitting my original components unless these items are addressed.

We include spacers for the std. set up but in the instructions it will list the needed size spacers when using various types of headers.

Enrique, yes this is correct Currently we only cover up to 77' for the Ford trucks. However we carry a few "builder series" or "universal" evaporators that will work with your vehicle. Since it will not be used with the AC system, you could either remove it or hide it. The Vintage Air kit will come with all of the appropriate wiring.

With 134a on the way out, what is the next automotive refrigerant, and will this system be compatible, or will parts need to be replaced? I believe I saw a TXV on the evaporator.

R134A is the what this system is designed for and may be the only refrigerant that Vintage Air will warranty. You need the proper industry standard service fittings for your refrigerant choice... You won't have to change the service fittings to use R134A so that's a point in its' favor. You could use R152A or Hydrocarbon R290/R600A blends like Envirosafe. Each one is its' own little can of worms. The best advice I can give you is take a notepad and research the downside and upside of each outside of the alarmist comments from the howler monkeys. Then make an informed decision for yourself. I'm not going to make a blanket statement that any one is better than another. That's a bald faced lie. It's risk management plain and simple. Pick your poison. There is no "BEST" refrigerant. They all burn, some release toxic gases when they oxidize, and they all can cause explosions under the right circumstances... they are all dangerous. So is the 16-20 gallons of extremely flammable liquid in a thin sheet metal tank under the truck. The Chlorine and Flourine based refrigerants release various nasty byproducts. Burning R12 makes the WWII nerve agent Phosgene gas. R152A and R134A can release Hydrogen Flouride and Carbonyl Flouride gas when exposed to heat and flame from burning atomized refrigerant oil and, despite the propaganda to the contrary, they both will burn even without the atomized oil. Hydrocarbon refrigerants don't release toxic gases when they burn but they are more willing to ignite than other refrigerants. Whatever refrigerant you choose be sure to CLEARLY LABEL the refrigerant type and charge amount so the next guy doesn't have to guess.

For the 81-87 C10, I just shopped around and most places were ~$1450. I found a place called jvautosales out of Texas who charged me $1375 shipped. There are a few different options like short/long water pump, which side your alternator is on, serpentine or V belts, normal or polished finish, whether or not your truck had factory air, etc. So the kit for your truck may no be the same price as the one for mine.

Hands down the absolute worst part of my C10 build. First time doing this, built every component of this truck from the ground up.. and this garbage modern product is the nightmare? 8 trillion parts, 4 trillion of which could have easily been pre-assembled in the factory.. goofy instructions, laugh out loud hard lines that don't fit, the 'clean up your firewall' panels actually force you to drill countless more holes (that don't even accommodate the hoses), 4 of the 6 condenser bracket screws/nuts were unusable because they were cheep horribly threaded crap. Can't really secure anything, because in a few steps.. you will realize that you have to take it down to fit in a part they forgot to mention. Heater core sticks out 4-6" from bottom of dash which looks awful... seriously, I could easily go on and on. If you like yelling, cursing, throwing tools and shaking your head all day.. then this is the product for you. I would never in a million years buy this product again. If you can restore your original system, then do it. I haven't even finished yet.. I can only take so much frustration at a time.. I'll check back once it's been charged and turned on. Expectations are low. *Edit.. just realized today that It also requires that you attach 2 hose fittings yourself!!?? LOL, like who has a hydraulic hose press at home? Just added another $200 to this pos.

I have this system best 1200 dollars ive ever spent, it will freeze you out of that truck and the small comprssor takes almost no HP from the engine, the infinate fan speed is speriour to the 4 position factory switch, and it looks so much nicer without all that shit on the firewall and the passengers side spark pugs are so much easier to get to and the evaporator is in the space where the heat is being removed from not fighting to overcome the heat in the hot engine compartment, the only thing i didnt like was loosing half the glove box but it was small anyway and i have a center console so i dont really use it, this kit had everything and i mean everything except the fan belt, a lot of the factory parts are obselete and are repos made in china, i probably added value to my truck, its a full on show truck ive turned down 15 grand for it, i dont drive it everyday mainly because people always come up and want to talk about it and i just want to go to lowes for something, on wed the gas station attendant at our sams here in Winston salem nc talked to me for 30 min about my truck, he also has a 87 and he also has the same vintage air and just loves it, those sanden compressors are the most reliable units you can buy, all the factory ones are a crapshoot, a new gm one is very expensive, if you stay factory dont buy none of these reman ones they just dont last, also that big hose manifold thing that goes on the back of the compressor is only held on with one bolt and its easy to strip out the vintage ac uses connectors on the intake and going out minimizing the chance for leaks, the condensor is a much more evfficent unit desighned to work with R-12 they do not cool as well converted to 134, you cant go wrong with this company, i have an 85 and 86 same unit in both, the 86 never even had ac from the factory, this was the best system on the market , super nice people to deal with, i ordered it and in 3 days it was on my doorstep.

Keep it stock if your going to auction it off in 20yrs as a “never touched, piece of history.” If your going to drive and enjoy it, do what you want with it.

@@jbncnow How is the heat feature? I've heard many rave reviews about the AC but have also heard that the heat output is sub par.

Unfortunately we do not ship internationally or have authorized distributors in France, however we do have a few in central Europe and the UK. if you visit our website www.vintageair.com and click on the "distributors" button then click on the international tab it will show our over seas dealers. I would imagine the shops in Holland or the Uk will ship to France.

Total hack job on the electrical side. If I paid someone to install this system and they used those crappy crimp fittings, I would have a HUGE problem with that.

I would never do this to my 71 GMC C-15 non A/C your just asking for problems in the future not to mention the extra strain you put on the engine....no thanks.
