You could probably try just a little more white lithium grease!

Petrolium grease and rubber are a bad combination. I would have used brake caliper pin grease or silicone grease.

that noise is the pistons machining mark.

That much grease might clog up the exit port filter.

These don't have a filter. Just a ball valve that opens a quarter inch line direct to atmosphere

Does it come down more gradually if it's not topped up?

Do you have a link to the guy you got them from?

I think that the main problem with these cheap pneumatic lifts is that the piston/cylinders are not well matched. So, the problem is less about grease and more about play within the piston assembly. An easy way to check this is to extend the lift assembly and see how much the top rocks back/forth.

The slop your describing needs to be there. Otherwise it could only operate directly straight up and down. When you lift a vehicle from one side it lifts in a radial motion. Think about when you lift with a bottle jack. It could literally slip right off an axle or it causes the jack to tilt. This alleviates both those common issues when lifting a vehicle. Unfortunately the telescoping tubes were never finished after being cut on a lathe. So it has all the machining marks which is what people are hearing. Extra refinement would require extra cost to the customer. I personally would gladly pay the extra for a more refined version of this. Which does exist but at a price that I wouldn't pay. It's not a $600 to $1,000 jack. Which is what the more refined versions cost. But realistically if it was $250 refined and the small issues with these resolved it would be worth it all day long. That being said I own one of these and I have a another on the way. I like them for what they are, and hearing those machining marks as it goes up and down means literally nothing to me. It will eventually break itself in. But it is in no way hurting anything either.

Has there ever been a sudden blowout of one of these types of jacks in the history of their use? The rubber must eventually degrade over time, as they couldn't be expected to last forever. When do they get retired? First signs of dry rot or based on age?

I would imagine you're going to need to use a little common sense here. For instance me with my semi trucks, some bags simply last longer than others. But as soon as I see dry rot cracking the back gets replaced. Sometimes that's only a year, the last set lasted over 5 years. I imagine these jacks will last even longer because they don't spend their life in the sun usually or out in the weather like they do on my rig.

What happens if you disconnect the air line and open up the fill valve while it's lifted? Does it drop immediately from the open valve?

Yes should not be a problem if the grease you use is high quality. You should however never use the amount the dude in the video used, thats just straight up wastefull and making a mess, very thin coat is plenty enough.
