AIPAC vs. AOC & The Squad: Pro-Israel Lobby Group to Spend $100M to Target Progressive Lawmakers

Support our work: democracynow.org/give
As we begin a pivotal election year in the United States, we look at the powerful U.S. lobby group AIPAC, which is set to spend more than $100 million to defeat progressives who are critical of Israeli human rights violations in Palestine. That includes Michigan's Rashida Tlaib, the only Palestinian American member of Congress. AIPAC's outsize influence in national campaigns comes with "an implicit threat," says The Intercept's Ryan Grim, whose new book, _The Squad: AOC and the Hope of a Political Revolution_, was published last month. "That money will still be spent, but it will be spent against you instead," he says about politicians who dare to turn down the pro-Israel lobby's deep pockets. "That really, to a shocking degree, constrained what Democratic candidates were willing to say when it came to criticizing Israel."

It is 2024. It is time to stop pretending "the squad" is opposition to the major projects of the elites which threaten the human species. They are not like opposition. They are a facade of opposition intended to deceive progressives. It's sad to see Democracy Now taken in by the hoax known as "the squad". We are supposed to watch this kabuki theatre put on by "the squad" while the environment is destroyed, while genocide unfolds, and while the threat of nuclear war enlarges. I think I'll pass.

@@lovely-mk4rt I've watched AOC and the squad carefully over the years. I've been following the ideological and group dynamics of the congress for years. I've considered what critics and supporters of the squad have said. I was initially extremely optimistic about AOC. I could probably write a far better book that Grim on this topic. My final analysis is that no one in congress has the interests of any majority, either from their district or the nation, as a priority. "The Squad" is no exception, not even close or even debatable. "The Squad" being primaried will have absolutely no impact on anything. I don't think they will lose more than one member. Their keeping their seats will be depicted as some kind of triumph and validation of the fairness of the system. But, again, nothing is going to change and nothing "The Squad" will ever do will have any impact other than to support the agenda of concentrated capital.

The US has virtually no limitations or regulations on campaign spending, advertising et cetera. Those limits that technically exist are not enforced particularly stringently and are easy to bypass. And the US supreme court has over time made it harder to attempt to regulate these forms of influence. What in other countries would absolutely be undue influence or subornment is so fundamentally normal and built in to the US system that their politics would collapse without it. That is to say, politics is an industry unto itself in the US. Facebook for instance has its own teams that interface directly with the two major political parties to help them develop advertising strategies. Most companies, most individuals, tend to support both sides. It's not about buying a senator, for instance, it's about the threat of withdrawing support or increasing it to the opponent. It's about ensuring everyone in every party is dependent on you, because ad buys are highly competitive and the amount of money spent is extreme.

Candidates To Sign Pledges Of Support For "Israel" - Cynthia McKinney Drops Bombshell May 23, 2011 U.S. POLITICIANS FORCED TO SUPPORT ISRAEL In an interview which aired on Press TV on Saturday-one day before the AIPAC conference got under way in Washington, former Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney revealed what amounts to some pretty startling news regarding the extent of the Israeli lobby's influence over Congress. During her years in Congress, she stated, candidates for both the House and the Senate were requested to sign pledges of support for Israel, documents in which the candidate promised to vote to provide consistent levels of economic aid to the Zionist state. Refusal to sign the pledge meant no funding for the candidate's campaign. "You make a commitment that you will vote to support the military superiority of Israel, the economic assistance that Israel wants, that you would vote to provide that," McKinney, who served in Congress from 1993-2003 and again 2005-2007, tells Press TV interviewer Marzieh Hashemi in the two-part video program below. According to McKinney, the pledge also included a vow to support Jerusalem as the capitol of Israel. "Every candidate for Congress at that time had a pledge, they were given a pledge to sign..." she said. "If you don't sign the pledge, you don't get money. For example, it was almost like water torture for me. My parents observed this. I would get a call and the person on the other end of the phone would say `I want to do a fundraiser for you.' And then we would get into the planning. I would get really excited, because of course you have to have money in order to run a campaign. And then two weeks, three weeks into the planning, they would say, `Did you sign the pledge?' And then I would say, `No, I didn't sign the pledge.' And then my fundraiser would go kaput." During her years in Congress, McKinney opposed U.S. involvement in foreign wars, questioned the official version of the events of 911, and introduced articles of impeachment against former President George W. Bush. Her final term in Congress came to an end after AIPAC, or the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, funneled money into the campaign of her opponent, Hank Johnson. McKinney's comments to Press TV came on the eve of the AIPAC Policy Conference in Washington, which was addressed Sunday by President Barack Obama. Last Thursday, Obama gave a "major speech" on the Middle East in which he suggested that a basis for peace in the region might be a withdrawal by Israel to its pre-1967 borders. However, in his speech Sunday, the president, quite predictably, backtracked on the proposal-and it may well have been Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who laid down the law to him. "On Friday, I was joined at the White House by Prime Minister Netanyah, and we reaffirmed that fundamental truth that has guided our presidents and prime ministers for more than 60 years-that, even while we may at times disagree, as friends sometimes will, the bonds between the United States and Israel are unbreakable, and the commitment of the United States to the security of Israel is ironclad," Obama told the conference. He also clarified what he had meant by his reference to "1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps" made in his speech Thursday. "By definition, it means that the parties themselves, Israelis and Palestinians will negotiate a border that is different than the one that existed on June 4, 1967," he said. McKinney was a candidate for president on the Green Party ticket in 2008. Also in 2008 she sailed aboard the Free Gaza ship Dignity as it attempted to deliver humanitarian supplies to Gaza, making a second effort to reach the blockaded territory the following year on the Spirit of Humanity. Both ships were blocked from reaching their destination by the Israeli Navy. Her comments about the pledges required of candidates for Congress are made in the second part of the program. In the first part she discusses how her congressional district in Georgia was dismantled through a legal suit brought about with the assistance of the Anti-Defamation League.

The U. S. Constitution is a framework for some administration of the state not an enumeration of humane democracy. The Constution does not prohibit electoral control by capitalists but rather ratifies slavery. Article I, Section 2 of the original Constitution is commonly known as the three-fifths compromise. It stated that each enslaved individual counted as three-fifths of a person in terms of representation in Congress, which is based on population. The compromise was struck between those who argued that enslaved people should not be counted at all and those who argued that all should be counted, thereby increasing representation for Southern states. Enslaved people did not have the right to vote, so this issue had nothing to do with voting rights; it merely enabled Southern states to count them among their population totals. No amendment, including the 14th Amendment, expressly abrogated the three-fifths provision. Enslavement Article I, Section 9, Clause 1 of the original Constitution prohibited Congress from passing laws that banned enslavement.

We need to go back to the 2016 Election to see just how much influence Netanyahu had on that election - what Putin did was minimum and indirect while Netanyahu was directly involved with "rigging" the Electoral Votes. to give Trump the win. Indeed Trump as Rep John Lewis said was an "illegal" president. The investigative material is in the public domain & yet it is not being brought out in the open. Hopefully this will come to light soon because it puts a new light on foreign involvement in our country and the undermining of our Democracy and our Constitution.

The existence and importance of the Aipac lobby is virtuality unknown amongst the UK electorate. A former BBC foreign correspondent attempted, as long ago as 2002, to examine its influence on US politics and sought answers at the HQ of this organisation, but was met with blank refusals. A programme entitled 'A Lobby To Reckon With' was broadcast on its Radio 4 in November 2002 and which I have a recording. The British media is largely 'Right Wing' and have apparently never chosen to expose the 'control' it has on the elected representatives of the American peoples.

Currently attempting to subvert the first amendment by coercing social media platforms to censor comments and writing laws that essentially end freedom of speech. Carries out hundreds of drone assassinations on foreign soil every day. Occupies dozens of countries at will without consent. Takes their resources. Threatens them with financial retribution should they refuse. Uses financial warfare and proxy terrorist networks to topple any foreign government that won’t comply.. I’m just picking on you.
