Aiming System for Pool - Thick or Thin System

This is a simplified version of the Center to Edge CTE and 90/90 aiming systems. The Thick or Thin Aiming System is used by some professionals to consistently pocket balls with a method that is easy to learn and easy to repeat under pressure. This video is meant for beginner and intermediate players who are looking for an aiming system with a low learning curve.
The Thick or Thin Aiming System is also valuable for those who have struggled using CTE and 90/90 in the past by eliminating the need to aim the cue ball to a spot inside the object ball; which some players struggle with due to issues with astigmatism, dominant eye, depth perception or the complexity of the aiming system. This system allows you to experience the benefits of the CTE and 90/90 aiming systems by offering a different approach to lining up the shot. Please Like and share to your friends. Post any questions you might have. I hope it helps your game! Thank you!
This video is a follow-up to my previous aiming video posted here: • Aiming System for Pool...

    First off, Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. They are clear and easy to understand as well as very helpful. Secondly, what a lot of crap you have to put up with while trying to help people! WOW! I have always believed that as long as you keep your eyes and ears open you can learn something. Quite often one must listen to all, take bits from all, and form it into your own thing that works for you. Don't put down the giver. Take all or part or none and be thankful that they took the time to try and help.

    This is helpful. I was shown CTE for the 1st time 2 months ago. Played competitively for.... long time. lol It immediately simplified things & all I saw were straight lines. Everything was straight, even banks. Freed up 90% of my focus for shape & I started getting out. Then, somehow, I lost the sight of seeing the straight line!!! Grrrr K. I know you care & are hanging on my words. I kinda got it back but was using straight line inside edges to pocket &!melting common sense. What you’re showing I think is going to free me up for shape. Thanks! I quit 07-17 cuz military stuff & all my Az buds were pro or high 600’s all of a sudden. I know they don’t give two thoughts over potting. Thank God for people who share knowledge

    The critics in this thread are way off and ignorant. This together with split the difference (little Mike) and Berger’s CTE are added checkpoints for aiming which makes shots consistent! I have started winning all my matches using a combination of split the difference and Segal’s thick and thin. These systems have helped to keep me calm and confident on pressure shots.

    If you’re having to take hard shots very often then you’re not leaving your cueball correctly.. you should be making every shot on the table as easy as possible.. jump shots, long shots and masse shots can all look fancy and take lots of practice and skill but they’re all actually very low % shots.. missing one could lead you to lose the game.. You should always try to keep the game simple especially if you’re playing on a league or for money.. assume that if you miss the opponent WILL make every ball.. if you’re left with one of these hard shots it’s almost always more beneficial to make a safety play

    as someone who started playing at a young age just messing around. to where I'm at now with my game. this is decent advice for beginners with close cuts. definitely not something for intermediate players. shifting your arm/hand position after lining up is terrible if your goal is to become better. the best way to get better at cuts it just learning the physics and mathematics of the game (either practicing different things, or actually studying). I personally have made negative cut shots thanks to the proper aiming and English/English transfer.

    Yeah this is dumb. Changing the 'angle of attack' on the final stroke is terrible technique. Consistency matters in cue sports and for that you need solid fundamentals. A good stance, a good bridge, and a clean flowing cue action. Learning the angles is how you get good at pool, and you should be able to pot everything plain ball. Side or 'English' comes later for more advanced shots and positional play.

  • @johnqa

    Also, center to edge is just for 30 degree angles, and moving the tip over is for roughly one other angle, say 45 degrees, so it leaves out all the other angles, plus these are all close to the pocket so variations dont matter as much.

    Yeah i do this naturally on some shots without thinking but without the pivot I know the right line to begin with. tho everyone decent knows this..i mean depends on what position you need as to the shot you need and where to hit on the white but this can help a new player I suppose. I think people will knock you for explaining it using simple shots without realising you are just simply demonstrating the theory lol which i think is a good idea personally. Coaches like to over complicate things this simplifys it for many and so at least i understand. I would only critique you for not saying in the end of the video that players should naturally see and get down on the right line of aim the shot without the need to pivot like they do for the half ball hit.

    I see your struggles with many people I teach. Without personally seeing you hit balls, I can only make an assumption based on what I've seen with others. I would say your issue lies in your aim perception. Meaning, what you perceive as aimed center CB to object ball is offline. What I recommend you do is practice hitting balls with someone standing behind the OB. Once you are down on the ball, ask them, "Am I aimed at the edge of the object ball or am I inside/outside of that line?

    Marc Segal yes, I've done that, and it helps some of the time, but it might just be my shot that's inconsistent. In any case my shots almost always cut too much (or sometimes too little) on long shots. I've had other more experienced players try this with me watching and get the same result. The angles just don't seem to add up. Could you please do a video on longer shots, even if it's exactly the same system. I'd love to see your take on it.

  • @delirio1987

    @delirio1987

    7 жыл бұрын

    +Nate Tam i'll help you: long shots with this method won't work. if you pivot the cue and hit the ball off center you're applying unwanted side spin. beacause of squirt and swerve this will cause you to miss longer shots and be off position. this "aiming system" doesn't work. just learn to aim for the ghost ball, correct your stance and practice a lot, your brain will take care of the angles, eventually

  • @marcsegal6497

    @marcsegal6497

    7 жыл бұрын

    delirio you couldn't be more wrong and obviously don't understand what's being taught. For long shots I recommend you begin with the "Thick" shot. I am teaching the same method used by Efren Reyes. When Efren uses this system, he pivots right and left of center using a backhand pivot (same as backhand English). You NEVER pivot using your bridge hand which will cause cue ball deflection. In fact, if you are attempting to pivot in that manner, it explains why you are incapable of using these systems! If you want to pivot using the bridge hand, I recommend you learn CJ Wiley's "Touch of Inside" aiming system which is a great system. Problems arise when you incorrectly use the wrong pivot for system, like you are doing.

I would give the guy credit for simply showing it like this so beginners get th theory of it clearly and simply and just take it away and practice because it def adds to your game if you can just automatically see the shots and play without over thinking.

    Shot length needs to be factored in, but that requires experimentation on your part. When the cue ball and object ball are on opposite sides of the table always default to the "thick" shot first. If that comes up short, then try the "thin" hit. Anyone who claims they can spoon feed you the "magic bullet aiming system for every shot" is total BS! Everyone is different. Everyone bridges and sights differently. The purpose of any aiming system is to get to the point where you make balls automatically without using it!

    Total bullshit. This may help if you only play on bar boxes with huge pockets or for shots only a diamond away from the pocket, but these methods quickly fall apart for longer shots on a 9-foot table or a snooker table with tight pockets. You're also teaching new players to shoot thick shots with backhand english, thus throwing the object ball into the pocket instead of pocketing it directly. Backhand english is a useful technique used by advanced players to reduce squirt, but it's terrible advice to hand to a new player. They should be learning to shoot the vast majority of their shots cuing center ball (center vertical axis). There are more effective ways of teaching new players how to aim, please don't teach them bad habits that they'll only have to unlearn years down the road.

    You are absolutely correct. But he answered the long shot questions perfectly in someone else comment years ago. Thats why hes not repeating himself. But he basically said all aiming systems are just a reference the rest you have too experiment and use what works for you and discard what doesnt. We as the player have too practice and make the adjustments your not just gunna go pro by watching one aiming systems. He also said the point of all aiming systems is so eventually you dont have too use an aiming system and can make each shot by muscle memory basically. So you are both correct. Other then all that if your a beginner its still a very good tool too try. If it dont work for you then dont use it that simple.

    David Webb You are confusing this with CTE and 90/90 which I also made a video on. I learned this system from watching Efren. he uses this system to shoot in long table shots less than 30° cut. You'll see him aim straight at the ON and then pivot 1/2 tip away from the pocket. He'll use the CTE parallel aim, pivot to center technique for steeper cuts.

    Hi everyone! Pivoting aiming systems have been used by the best players in world for generations. Here's a short 30 second video of Pool Legend and Hall of Fame member Cowboy Jimmy Moore using a pivoting system (he's using 90/90 taught by the late Ron Vitello). It's one of the most obvious examples of a would class professional using a pivoting system. These systems are used by Efren Reyes and many other world class players today. Amateurs who don't fully understand how pivoting systems work will downgrade and chastise them because they couldn't figure them out. However, they work extremely well for those capable of learning and using them. kzread.info/dash/bejne/dJdms5elmMK8gs4.html

    Nakadu that's EXACTLY what I'm claiming. Proof is in the video! Just look up any random match of his. You'll notice for slight cuts he aims straight at the object ball and then pivots away from the pocket 1/2 tip on his last stroke. For steeper cuts he pivots using the CTE system, cueing to one side of the cue ball (parallel to the center line) and then pivots to cue ball center on the last stroke. What I'm teaching in this video is a more simplified version of CTE for beginner/intermediate players to get them started using a pivoting system. I suggest you look up Stan Shuffets videos to get the detailed info on the CTE system used by Efren and other pros.

    This is stupid, you're cueing across the ball and relying on side to pot the ball. Too many variables there, if that ball is 2 feet further away from the cue ball, you miss. The shot you make is stupidly easy too, if you can't make that you need new eyes. Stand behind the shot, you can see the shot, step in, drop down straight and push the cue through the centre of the ball, done. If you miss you did one of those things wrong.

    Correct Bob - the ONLY shot where you aim at the edge of the object ball is a 30 degree half ball angle... otherwise you miss (unless you are playing on huge pockets with the object ball next to it). Playing english simply sends the cue ball on a curve which makes things even more difficult when the ball is not over the pocket as in the video. Further, even if the elglish pivot system did work, the distance to the ball and the speed of the shot would change the amount of english needed on every shot - so you may as well reduce the variable, remove english, and simply change the aim on every shot and learn through trial and error over time

    Well we all do half ball hit and helping side well a lot do and I many use all three shots actuallly. You got to dig in at distance and strike it pure -- be more careful but helps to memorise certain shots and potting angles when in the balls (not so much at distance) - every player who is decent uses all three shots but not one player pivots ...cept maybe trump who pivots to centre ?? but I think most do thes shots without the pivot (thy autmatically just know the line they need and all use bits of side and mixture of side for position. This kind of thing places it in memory for a beginner and far better if you just can just see the shots better and play without thinking this is a good way of explaining the concept. Anything that helps cooit potting angles to instictive memory is good right?

Experiment with the system on different length shots (try the "thick" aiming first when the cue and object ball are on opposite ends of the table), and you'll understand why pros like Efren Reyes use it to win world championships! I didn't invent pivoting aiming. It's not a hoax. It's been used by pros for decades! Amateurs who don't understand how the systems work, downgrade them out of ignorance. Aiming systems don't work. They may for a while but will always fail you. You have to see the contact point and know how to make the cue ball strike it. You have to download it in your mind. The most important thing for me is to have a reference point on the object ball and move left or right from their. I am not knocking his video there are some points that work for some shots.

I've seen plenty of those type of "instructional videos" and I find it distracting and adding unneeded length to the video setting up shots and running after balls. My attention span is short, so I make short videos. LOL! The purpose of my video is to teach players a more consistent method for pocketing balls. I can use the shots demonstrated in this video to make at least 90% off all shots on the table, including one rail banks. I think thats pretty cool!

    Cause with the side spin you start off center to edge again, it's easier to remember than telling the novice: instead of aiming center to edge and just scoot over just like before you have to aim to fit the cut you have to do... and to aim to the cut he has to do he needs feel, but the novice doesn't have a great feel for all those shots yet so yeah, this method helps that, and plus it gets him used to using side spin early on. Anyways, I think it's a great method for learning. Simple and accurate.

This actually frees your mind to play rather than messing with your head try it ...then come back. if you also learn to pot plain ball too and using side start messing doing this also you begin to see the angle of these all over the table too.. its useful to know this and if you dont already you int playing enough

    This is no technique, it's just potting with side. Maybe I don't want any side spin on the cue ball. I also play snooker and I was always taught to make sure the cue is perfectly straight throughout the shot, moving your cue at the last second as you take the shot will surely make you miss, it's terrible advice. Also, doing this for a long shot would make the cue ball swerve off target. If you can't pot a ball 4 inches from the pocket you need more practise.

    hate to piss on your parade but, You fail to address cueball deflection or squirt on a long shot! This is ok as long as the shot is short and only a few inches from the pocket otherwise not so good on long shots unless you are playing on a very short table. I must say it is good for a true beginner, gives him or her a starting point and then move on to a better aiming system.
