In this video, Christian Hausegger tells the legend of the origins of aikido, which dates back to the 1st century AD. All traditional Japanese martial arts, such as aikido, karate, judo, iaido, kendo and many others, can be traced back to this legend and still use the techniques that have their origins in this legend to this day.

The legend of origin:
In the year 98, during the reign of the 12th emperor - or Tenno in Japanese - named Keiko from 71 to 130 AD, the Kumaso tribe rebelled.
The heir to the throne, Prince Ousu, also known as Yamato Takero no Mikoto, was therefore ordered to lead a punitive expedition to Kyushu.
On the long journey from the capital of the empire and seat of the imperial palace to Kyushu, he underwent a purification ceremony at the Kamiyo waterfall.
He placed his feet in the rocky bottom of the waterfall, opened his arms, filled himself with the power of the spirit and gathered all the strength of his body in the tips of his fingers.
Turning to the sky, he struck upwards several times, after which he lowered his hands and performed several powerful arm thrusts. After the prince had completed this action, he decided to attack the Kumaso.
Disguised as a woman, he sneaked into the enemy camp and tracked down the sleeping Kumaso leader. When the latter tried to attack him, the prince opened his arms, filled himself with spiritual power and struck down the Kumaso leader after snatching his sword from him. This technique of spreading his arms and throwing them down was the beginning of AIKI.
The prince then studied hard and passed on his skills to Takeda no Kami no Mikoto to protect the palace. Through the 6th son of Emperor Seiwa, named Sadazumi, the knowledge passed through his son Tsunemoto to the father of the famous General Minamoto no Yoshimitsu and finally to Yoshimitsu himself, who is regarded as the ancestor of AIKI.
According to historical tradition, during the time of Emperor Seiwa and especially his son Sadazumi, bare-handed strikes such as sword blows were used against those parts of the body that were not or only inadequately protected by the armor. Such techniques are still a characteristic part of Aikido in the Takeda style today, for example in the form of Aikiuchi - Aikido striking techniques.
