After a long break in aikido and trying different martial art. I'm back in aikido. Aikido is a way of life for me, I've no intention to engage in a street fight or combat or competition. I've a family and a job, I can't afford to train like an athlete (nor to show up with injury at work). I like to train aikido till I'm old and to maintain my health, which is possible in aikido. What makes me back to aikido, was reading some of people's comment about martial art on youtube, I know that aikido also teach its participant to be respectful and humble -- which we need more in real life -- cheers

I really love this way of thinking too. East Asian Martial Arts are not mean to compete. People nowadays only think about hurting other people, martial arts should teach you how to be a better person physically and mentally through their Way (Do), not become King Kongs or some kinds of beasts.

***** Now that is a different issue. The way we train Aikido in the Dojo, it would be difficult for anyone expect those with 20 or more years of practice to adequately defend themselves against true street violence. The underlying principles, I believe are effective, but we do not practice them in a way that allows for practical application. This is just my humble opinion, and yes I practiced Aikido for almost a decade, and I still enjoy it for what it is. But for real life violence I train in something different. Also I truly subscribe to the idea that there are no superior martial arts, only superior martial artists. All Martial Arts offer something, but it is HOW one trains, and what one trains for that prepares them. Which is why Tier 1 Operators use live rounds to train, because you will fight how you train. Like I said, just my opinion, I am no expert only a student.

The reason they breakfall like that is to avoid injury. If they didnt they would have broken wrist arms or worse. The spirit of aikido is not to attack it is to defend and not harm the attacker. That is what it is designed for. Not a ring fight or a challenge. We dont care about such things. It a peaceful. Minimal damage self defense system. Thats it. Nothing more, nothing less. Be respectful please.

The movements are exaggerated to prevent damage... The guy acting the antagonist moves into the move in order to prevent himself from getting hurt. "I love Aikido, Its so beautiful" "Yes, but how effective in a real fight????" I think that's a big part of what this entire debate is about. What educated, civilized adult would allow themselves to get in a real fight? If you've trained in a martial art under a responsible Sensei, would you start a fight? Would you even be allowed to be provoked into a fight? If you answer yes to either one, you have no business training in martial arts. Once you get past that, then you can objectively compare one marital art to another as a means of self-defense, meaning defense against a mugging attempt or an unprovoked attack of some kind, Aikido is very effective. Most attempted muggings involve grabbing arms, neck or some other part of the body. Against someone who has trained in Aikido, there is nothing that will make you more vulnerable to being completely neutralized in seconds. A frontal grab by an aggressive individual trying to physically provoke you often starts as a push to the chest or a grab to the lapel or both lapels. Again, against an Aikidoka, that is a very good way to be thrown or experience a very painful joint lock and a very quick pin to the floor. Aikidoka don't fight, nor for that matter do any mature adults. That is not what Buddho is about. We do not live in feudal Japan or the wild west. This is what we chose as a martial art, many of us in addition to other forms. The idea of getting into a “street fight’ is ludicrous.

CrateofStolenDirt So, am I to assume you've been to a number of Aikido dojos, especially those in urban areas and witnessed the lack of simulating an attack that is much like a mugging with an uncooperative opponent? Every Aikido organization is different. Every dojo is different. I am part of Birankai which is at the more martially intent end of the spectrum. My dojo in particular is set in the shadow of Chicago's CTA Green Line elevated train. That's how most of us go to work. That's why many of us train in Aikido. It runs through the most violent eight or nine miles of neighborhood in the US. At the advanced level, Uke attack with great determination. As far as simulating such an attack, Nage walking blindfolded back and forth across the mat with multiple Uke waiting to attack from any number of angles seems to me to be a hyper realistic mugging scenario. We don't do that often but there is a lot of emphasis on being attacked from behind. There is even more emphasis on being vigilant. I will say this on because this is an Aikido discussion and therefor Aikidokas' territory to defend, you are just another bad-ass practitioner of some more "dynamic" martial art who denigrates Aikido without really understanding it. We are not just graceful, peace loving people who don't want to injure other people. Many of us have trained for years in other forms and have chosen Aikido as our primary form. Those of us who have trained long enough and hard enough are formidable. You know nothing about Aikido.

CrateofStolenDirt I get what you are saying, but you're blowing it way out of proportions. Aikido exists and if you want to flame it, you may. But you have no knowledge or respect until you tried it. It is being offered. In your own metaphore, if your quest was to see a mastodon and 10 people in the city say 'I have one right here' you are obliged to check out at least some of these claims. Same with aikido. You claim it doesn't work, there are many dojos that offer it. Check it out.

CrateofStolenDirt If you want evidence on how effective Aikido is than I suggest you look at the third law of gravity from Isaac Newton as Aikido follows this principle. There are many physicists who practice Aikido and can understand it's techniques by looking at the human body in a physics sense. Gravity is our friend in Aikido.

  • @MrMattias87

    @MrMattias87

CrateofStolenDirt I'm not bullshitting you at all mate I am actually telling you how Aikido works because I actually am an Aikidoka.....so you've chosen the wrong guy to argue over a martial art style. And I don't have to be a physicist to understand basic physic principles. Your argument has no basis at all because you have not practiced Aikido yourself to understand the techniques and the mechanics of the human body. In fact your argument is pretty much inferential. Aikido works with both gravity as well as inertia. Movements in Aikido are not linear they are in fact spiral and right angle vectors. So I am far from making "armchair" hypothesizing mate. And so far my argument is pretty valid. But until then mate unless you've practiced Aikido yourself you don't have any validity to ridicule it.

***** Sanctioned fights are just as silly as street fights, maybe even sillier. Many of the techniques in Aikido would be illegal in sanctioned fights. Aikido is not a fight style. It is a martial art. Fighting is not Budo. It is not even civilized. Two professional athletes fighting in a "sanctioned" fight are gladiators, not martial artists. I trained for two hours last night and can barely move. I promise you that I was doing anything but dancing. youtube videos reveal very little about Aikido. If you've never been in an Aikido dojo practicing one of the more dynamic forms or attended a seminar, you have no idea what you're talking about.

+Panny Spirou The way I understand it, this is simply a demonstration of a martial ART, which also reflects a way of life outside of these movements. They go through this set of movements not to demonstrate the combat ability of the martial art, but rather the philosophy of the martial art. And on top of that, people who master this art also master the ability to peacefully divert all combat situations, and all non-combat situations. It teaches mind and body discipline, emptiness, readiness, compassion and fluidity that carries over to any and all situations. THAT is aikido. If you want something PURELY combative (which I don't suggest) then something you'll like something more aggressive like Krav Maga or Muay Thai. Aikido is about more than just conquering your opponent, though.

Everyone saying that Aikido is just dancing, well it can appear that way. However, there is no better practice to understand the physics of the human body and how to manipulate it. Aikido teaches the most efficient ways to use your opponents hinged parts to achieve the desired outcome. Is it a one stop shop? No it isn't, but it is an invaluable discipline to have in your repertoire. It is inherently defensive and, as such, doesn't attract today's more aggressively inclined fighters. For that reason, it should even more so be an art to have in your arsenal.

The one who didn't join any school besides Aikido, are somewhat have fighting experiences themselves. Aikido could work, if only the practitioners are knowledgeable in Aikido as well as any other martial arts. Because, atemi in Aikido are essential. Sadly, nowadays people who practices Aikido aren't engaging in martial arts besides Aikido. So does the atemi techniques aren't properly teached. I don't see why people complain so much about it being staged - duh, it's what it is. They're showing off skills and such. I bet your eye is just untrained to really see the worth of their skills. You judge off an entire martial art based on one video you don't even understand the context of. Saying aikido won't help you in a combat is like saying a person wearing glasses and holding a book could never win in a fight with you, since they must be nerds. aside from the techniques that designed to improve your balance and feeling of distance aikido has very strong joint locks and throws. I was trained in wrestling and judo for 6 years and then switched to aikido. I can say that there are very good techniques that work but it looks like general grappling, and does not look beautiful. If people train aikido with understanding of real combat, you can achieve a very good level of skills for combat. BUT people must realize that aikido is just a style of grappling like judo or Greco-Roman wrestling. any person is beatable. people should not get confused that if you learn aikido you can defeat 10 people with one move. that's just stupid.

It definitely would not work if you'force it to work and it definitely won't work if you try to keep it stylized traditionally. I have nothing wrong with aikido. aikido is a cute, beautiful, spectacular style. I wouldn’t call it a martial art, but rather some martial dance. aikido is practically a stage choreography, with big falls, rotations, landslides, twists, theatrical movements, large-scale movements. it is really spectacular and can be beautiful. I wouldn't call it a sport either, since in aikido "workouts" a person who is overweight or who is weak and has very poor endurance gets tired at most. we prefer to leave the sports token to the actual sports. i have trouble with commentators who will be brainwashed and fanatical after a year or two of aikido and then write on the page with a foaming mouth that "aikido is a defensive fighting system, one of the best self defense styles in the world, there are very tough trainings, our techniques are cruel , very effective against group attacks, very effective against knives, very effective against machine guns ". Then when the normal answers come and describe that this whole self-defense bullshit is very over-panted, plus in such street misfortunes (which won’t happen to an average person anyway), even boxing and wrestling don’t work, let alone kamu aikido. and then those commentators go crazy and hysterically start referring to the black belts of their cheating masters and the KZread videos that "aikido is really effective, invented for self-defense, it has to be done for a long time, and then any drugged, aggressive, shit-free, vipered Roma it will work against aikido because it is the style of the gods ". well now it’s very hard to start with commentators like that because half of it is troll and the other half is absolutely out of the picture. they’ll be littered with a few proles on the train one day or a nose of an alcoholic ox in the pub, and then maybe they’ll realize that street conflicts don’t work in reality as they do in their heads, and then maybe aikido won’t be as divine in style either. but I have the same problem with wing tsunos, krav seeders, ninjutsus, and other money-laundering style commentators. they have been so fooled by rogue coaches that they no longer have any contact with reality, so there is no room for reason.

"If ignorance is bliss, what is delusion?" Um using youtube videos as measurable evidence is pretty delusional. you can't judge a martial art's effectiveness just by watching.

This is an art made for respect, humility, and “dancing” effectively, it’s not a self defense art.

Unconvincing choreographed dancing, not combat. And this is coming from someone who thinks Aikido works fine for self defense.

I know it's not very convincing... because what we really see in DEMONSTRATIONS are mostly choreographed. But listen to this man, my father was a very prolific aikido practitioner. One night (18 years ago) he went home late.. as he went home he encountered 3 punks/gangster/jackass.. and pointed guns and knives to him asking for money. What he did, he gave his wallet then as the punks flew out of the scene, he grabbed the guy with the gun and snapped his neck. Dead on the spot. the other two with broken arms. THIS IS NOT A SPORT. Aikido was designed to use less force but create momentous impact. As my father always told me that teaching this to me should require time and patience. What we see in demonstrations is just the practical use of Aikido, but he said to me that it was a very dangerous art. By the way, he was 57 years old back then when this happened. DON'T JUDGE TOO QUICKLY BRO.

elayda93 All it comes from years of practice, not from technique itself. Its like when you carry water every day after some years you gonna become much stronger, but do u need to carry water to become stronger?

elayda93 So did your father do any time for killing that thug, or did he flee from the scene to not be caught? I know that he was a victim of a crime, but it must have been an interesting case, because if he waited for the person to be off guard, he was no longer defending himself.

I personally think it is a wonderful demonstration of Aikido. And I'm an Instructor of Aikido. It is sharp, focused, harmonized and quick! That's the way it should practice.

+Paul Daluz Aikido can be quite effective....The MMA idiots always state if it doesn't work in a ring, than it doesn't matter...whatever. There is a reason that many police departments, bodyguards, and even military training incorporates aikido. It may not be the only thing they study, but it is a primary art for them. It works quite well in a real fight. I've only seen it used once, but watched someone at a party trying to punch someone else and watched them be thrown in a kaitenage into a wall so hard they were incapacitated. Aikido demos are just that....DEMOS.....We aren't trying to hurt each other. Believe it or not....it can work well without the whole I want to kill them mentality. The one true knock on Aikido, after studying it for a long time...is that it takes a LONG time to get good at. That doesn't mean it's ineffective, just that to be really proficient at it will take many years.

+Physmanic I do MMA. And Im not an idiot.....I beg your pardon. However I also work in Law enforcement. I do agree with you that in law enforcement most officers who train in martial arts use either aikido, aiki jujutsu or Hakko Ryu jujutsu. ........all descendant arts of the Daito Ryu system. Furthermore, to support your claims, after working in Law enforcement for so long, you'll eventually develop a distaste for violence and can appreciate arts like Aikido thats designed to not hurt your opponent and actually be accountable for him. You have to respect that. My only concern, is that how effective can that be against a trained opponent? Nowadays, everyone has some kind of MMA training. Thats why I posted my comment. So that people such as yourself can educate me. :-)

+Paul Daluz I would agree, and I am sorry for using the term "idiot", I just get tired of people disparaging aikido who have never practiced it or experienced it. It gets old. I think Aikido can be very effective against a trained opponent, however, it can also be difficult. One of the things with aikido, is that it requires a committed attack. If the attacker has not committed, you can't really unbalance them, or rather, not easily without the use of extensive atemi, etc. So, if you have someone who just wants to jab and throw exploratory strikes, you can't do much with those from an Aikido perspective. Of course, at that point, I would merely step out of range and wait until they committed. I enjoy MMA for what it is, but I think that MMA people also overestimate their art and don't acknowledge the limitations that fighting in a ring with rules and a ref impart on their practice as well. The thing with aikido is time. I would posit that to become truly proficient in Aikido to the point where you can use it against a trained attacker takes at least 8-10 years. This is both a strength, but is also a weakness of aikido. Aikido is beautiful, fluid, and can be very effective, but it is also subtle, nuanced, and complicated....and takes a long time to learn, this what I love about it...it's NOT easy......BUT, others feel differently. Which is why I tell people thinking of Aikido that if they just want to learn a fast self defense art....take Tae Kwon Do....you'll get your black belt in like 2-3 years, and will master it much quicker, but if you like the principles of Aikido, are patient, and willing to put up with the frustration, then by all means...come along. LOL.
