AIKI (joining energies) applications in aikido, by Stefan Stenudd

Спорт

Here are aikido applications of the aiki principle (joining with the energy of the attacker). Joining instead of resisting is one of the core ideas of aikido. It shapes the techniques in so many ways.
The aiki concept is an old one in the Japanese martial arts. It was a strategy used to ensure victory. But it is also a key to making the aikido techniques gentle to the point of becoming epiphanies also to the attacker. It is how aikido transforms into a peaceful martial art.
On this video I show a number of different applications of the aiki principle. Each one is explained in text as well. They are really just facets of one and the same gem, which means they all apply to any aikido technique. Well, most of them. Some are alternate solutions, different ways of doing the same technique.
I mainly show it rather slowly for clarity, but there are also some faster examples. Usually it’s gotai (from a static starting point). But there is also some jutai (moving as the attack approaches).

When I started aikido I used to doubt move like these. Until I tried that against an old Japanese aikido master. I was tossed and flying like paper. Thanks Sensei. I learn a lot from your video.

May be this is trend of modern aikikai, but it will not work with untrained uke. You must to invite this uke to your Dojo to practice this. Anyway I put my like.

Vic Tor, I don't know if this kind of practice is a trend within Aikikai. The Aikikai is an organization (and a grading system), but a lot of different aikido is practiced within it. Surely, a trained uke can deal with these exercises more smoothly than one who is not. But in my experience, the principles used here work as well on complete beginners as they do on advanced practitioners. Thanks for the like :)

Stenudd shihan is not doing the normal movements, that´s why it seems that he doesn´t have kamae, he is doing sankaku shimentai, not sankaku tai, in other words, he didn´t show in the video the common position of hidari kamae and migi kamae, it is almost imperceptible, that is what i saw.

4.11 I can't see any way how such a tiny wrist movement can cause the ukemi seen here, this is suggestion at best and over compliance by your uke, these are the exercises which make the majority of people interested in martial arts to call aikido nonsense, because they are not presented clearly enough for what they are, katas and exercises for both partners. Could you explain exactly what you mean by extended spirit? Thanks.

Aiki is the art of "harmonising energy". The way it works is that "the attacker" (aka. uke training partner) has his own energy flowing within his mind and within his body. What the tori must do is that the energy of tori's consciousness must match and conform in harmony with uke's body energy AND uke's mind energy. When this harmony of energy matches at an efficient level, it means that the two bodies are moving as a single body and the state of aiki is achieved. The instant of aiki means that tori can then move the united bodies and uke absolutely cannot resist because uke's body is moving according to his very own energy that was generated by tori! So what does tori does within this harmonious body is cause kuzushi in uke's structure either to throw him, or maybe to pin him. You must always remember that the aim in aikido is for tori to achieve physical harmony which means uke's body is moved with the strength of uke's own power. As for the meaning of _extended spirit, short move_ , I'm not certain about how to interpret this. With this demonstration alone, I couldn't achieve what he did in 4:11.

@@FreeSalesTips Thanks for the reply, re watching it I notice right at the beginning he has said they are exercises to explore principles. I guess you need to be some way down the aiki path to get what is going on, but he is not being 'attacked' by any stretch of the imagination, and using weird descriptions like extending spirit just isn't helpful 😊 I find vids like this difficult to watch as it looks so self indulgent and it's not made clear that it's cooperative training, and uke is behaving within a set of predetermined rules.

@@jaydee5618 When one understands the meaning of aikido, cooperative training is equally as meaningless as highly resistive training. For these people who understand the meaning of aikido, the only thing that matters is "I'm allowing his universe to enter my universe and we shall unite". In order to reach this high level of comprehension, uke must not "be cooperative" in relation to tori; any uke who does this as normal aikido training is hindering tori's training. The one and only reason to "be a cooperative uke" is to demonstrate principles to a beginner tori who hasn't been exposed to the specific principles. Once the tori has exposure and has evolved beyond the principle mechanics, uke must not "be cooperative" as it will distort tori's training to sense through feeling. As for the attacks that are demonstrated in this very video, this is related to the meaning of aikido. The so-called "weak attacks" are equally as meaningless as "strong resistance". The only thing that matters about uke is that uke must generate an energy that is strong enough for tori to use. It is tori's job to feel the energy and resolve the energy according to aikido.

@@FreeSalesTips - Yes. A key question everyone scrutinizing aikido, especially aikidoka themselves, is: if aiki was such a significant difference-maker back in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when Sokaku Takeda, Morihei Ueshiba, and other students of Takeda were able to prove their skills against experienced judoka and other skilled martial artists, at a time when martial arts in general were not yet overly watered down by rules, and attract these men as devoted students: is “aiki” in its original form effective against non-compliant combatants not the same as what passes for “aiki” now which largely is relegated to practice against compliant or at best seni-resisting uke? There’s ample evidence that the modern interpretation of aiki is a mis-interpretation, and that true aiki is an internal body skill developed using Taoist and similar principles and training methodologies that are found across multiple Asian martial traditions (and unfortunately the internal training protocols in these traditions are similarly misinterpreted by most modern practitioners). It is this body skill, which is _not_ dependent on timing or memorization of aikido waza (techniques) that was the difference-maker. Happy to discuss further if anyone’s interested.

@@varamaur9567 You must remember that aiki is about the harmonising of two (or more) energies to unite into a single body. According to my own interpretation of aiki, this is a very intuitive state to achieve, untrained people achieve the state of aiki with intuition in their daily lives! Consider the common playground swing, you give an initial push to get the swing moving in motion. If your goal is to maintain the normal pendulum swinging motion, the energy you apply to the swing must not contradict (must not resist) the energy that's happening within the swing. In order to continue the pendulum motion, you need to provide an energy within its proper context: there is a proper timing, distance, and a proper directional vector in which you can apply your strength to achieve the goal. If you get any of these factors wrong, the energy you apply to the swing is very likely to contradict with the swing. When this is all done properly the two energies unite in harmony into a single body, this is the state of aiki being achieved. I don't consider aiki to be a mystery when I consider it through the example of the swing. The application of aiki to martial arts is a much more difficult skill to achieve. This is because people don't understand what needs to be done in order to physically harmonise energies to unite into a single body. The fundamental principle of aiki still remains: there is always a proper context about timing, distance, and directional vector for you (tori) to apply your own energy in order to achieve union with the attacker (uke). I consider an unlimited number of ways to achieve union (that is to achieve aiki). This is the conclusion I have with my understanding of what it means to have the state of aiki. Aikido waza is a good framework to guide people into achieving aiki, but traditional aikido waza is not the only means of doing so.
